The story is that the brown dwarf is hiding behind the sun and in 2012 it will come around and come close to earths orbit switching our polarities around and destroying the world more or less.
This 2012 thingy is getting weirder every time I read about it...
Anyway, the reason why it started in the first place is because 2012 is when the mayan calendar ends. Supposedly this is because the age is ending and another one starting, not because it'll be the end of the earth.
Maybe the guy that chiseled rock out, thought, "This is stupid. I'm done with this after 2012." |

The latest theory I heard is that sometime in late December of 2012 the earth will be directly between the sun and the black hole at the center of the galaxy. Some people think this will cause a gravity distortion to the planet or cause the magnetic poles to flip which may or may not cause the crust to flip too. |

When you consider how strong the galactic blackhole has to be to hold the entire galxay togeather you serously cant believe that alignment would need to be so exact to cause any affect on the planet.
You know what would be funny though, is if the myians werent kidding themselves and figured that by the time their calander ran out no one would still be using it so they decided stop right there. Until a group of crediable sientists say we're dead in 2012 il plan my trip to vegas for Jan 1 2013.

I'm tired of hearing about this, honestly.
Just because the Mayan calendar ends in December 2012 doesn't mean anything, other than that the Mayans couldn't predict the future to infinity.
It's all based on random conjecture, speculation, and hearsay. That's all.
Oh, and paranoia too. Can't forget the conspiracists.

As it is the dec 28th 2012 thing is when the great cycle ends, it's an extremely accurate time measurement system the largest wheel of which completes its full cycle on the afforementioned date. Originally created and used by one of the native american civilisations, which one I can't remember. though if you believe it represents the end of the world then I guess you're also open to the idea that they didn't invent it they were just given that time measurement system by aliens or something...
I don't really care much for the idea that that is when the world will end. I have a clock on my wall the largest hand of which will complete it's cycle at midnight tonight, thus that must be when the world is ending...
Also regarding the world ending people tend to confuse the world ending with humans becoming extinct. I don't care much for prophecies and whatnot but would like to point out the the earth ending and humans ending are two different concepts. in a lot of end time stories the earth is still here after the apocalyptic events have occurred.
EDIT: Dec 21st 2012 not dec 28th, here's the wiki bit on it: "December 21 ù The Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, notably used by the Maya civilization among others of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, completes its thirteenth b'ak'tun cycle since the calendar's mythical starting point (equivalent to 3114 BC August 11 in the proleptic Gregorian calendar, according to the "GMT-correlation" JDN= 584283).[7] The Long Count b'ak'tun date of this starting point (13.0.0.0.0) is repeated, for the first time in a span of approximately 5,125 solar years. The significance of this period-ending to the pre-Columbian Maya themselves is unclear, and there is an incomplete inscription (Tortuguero Stela 6) that records this date. It is also to be found carved on the walls of the Temple of Inscriptions in Palenque, where it functions as a base date from which other dates are computed.[8] However, it is conjectured that this may represent in the Maya belief system a transition from the current Creation world into the next. The December solstice for 2012 also occurs on this day. Astronomically, the Earth is said to be aligned facing the center of the Milky Way behind the Sun on this date."

Edited by: Chr0nosX on 19/11/2007 20:18:12 The switching of Earth's polarities will not destory the world. The "use" of the Earth's magnetic field is to stop cosmic rays reaching us. If cosmic rays did reach us it would not destroy the world but double the amount of radiation reaching us by two. Maybe a few more cancer cases a year - anyway I doubt the poles will reverse. The magnetic field getting completely detroyed though - that would be bad but flipping no (we would even get to see the Northern Lights everywhere).

Searching for phrophet yields the same dat in some cases, many phrophets have predicted the end of the world.
Fact is most of them are dead anyway, and the world is still spinning around the sun.

One thing few people realise is that there are around 18 Mayan/Aztec etc calendars around. There is a dispute on the end date of the current Mayan calendar depending on how you work it out so the end date is 22nd or 23rd of 2012.
The other calendars have been theorised as existing prior to the current Mayan calendar. The author of the Mayan Factor Dr Jose Arguelles has theorised that nearing the end of the calendar would be a change in human thinking (putting it simply).
There are theories on the earth's magnetic field diminishing and realigning to opposite poles but my research shows that magnetic field effects happen over a very long period of time. I understand this could be in the order of 10,000 to 100,000 years.
Lots of theories but not the end of the world.
Random information: The largest single Mayan counting unit is in the order of 40 million years and is approximately the time for the milky way to go through one cycle. The smallest unit of time from the Vedas is around 1/300,000,000th of a second at which only nuclear reactions occur in that timescale.
