You know what, i was thinking the other day being a brit nd all, what is the best show on the TV these days. Being a Sci-Fi nut i automatically went for Stargate or something along those lines, and then I got to thinking.
You see in the UK these days we have a choice of basically three options. Mass Marketed American TV Game Shows OR Shows like Pop Idol, and Strictly Come Dancing.
Thats it! Let's be honest, going through these 3 ideas....
1. American Mass Marketed TV......not a lot of thought goes into these programs, they all follow a standard formula, and any brave ones there are get cancelled.
2. Game shows....well I will admit there are some good ones out there....the weakest link still makes me laugh, the rest are pretty much the same formula again, and besides half the time you go....oh didn't i see him on.....
3. Pop Idol shows. Now as much as I love Simon Cowell and his instant put-downers and all, how many of these types of shows do we really have to have! I mean talk about over-kill.....damn you Big Brother.
So I was left with a startling and quite amazing choice..the only show worth watching on TV these days is Top Gear! I know i was as shocked as you, but there you have it. So if you want to have fun on a sunday evening...or any other for that thought, tune in 8pm bbc2 Sunday or hell even youtube it.
Thank you for your time
Mr. J Clarkson.

I still think some of that was acting...
Like the cow on the roof of the Camaro? You brits don't actually think we have cows dead on the side of the road?
And he would have needed a crane to put it on top of the car, not to mention weld in some bracing, as it would have just collapsed the roof...
However, I did laugh my ass off the entire episode...

I think they go back and re-shoot stuff to get the right pictures for the show. I would also say that they put a lot of thought into the races to make them as close as they can.

There's this thing, called editing... sometimes people mirror image footage (flip it) to get the right angle, or manipulate it... perhaps that gave the impression he was driving on the wrong side of the road...

This is true. The in-car footage is 'real', mostly from the actual race, when they're done they track the route and shoot some external shots, and some other things to make it look nice. Can't have only the race footage to make it interesting, it's still an entertainment show rather than a documentary....

Signed. JC is one of my personal heroes. Someday I hope to be half as much of an *** as he is.
As I live in the U.S. I don't get TG on the tv so I have to download it every Sunday night. I usually wake up before school to watch it Monday morning. I think I have every episode of the modern version of TG on my computer.
For anyone else in the states: The real version of top gear is MUCH better than the edited down junk we get here. (unless you get bbc).

The real Top Gear lasts a full hour - no commercial breaks, the episodes *are* one full hour long.
So in order to show them in the US at full length you would need a 3 hour slot, considering you get more ads than TV over there. In the Netherlands they don't even air the episodes - They simply edit, cut and paste parts from different episodes together in a 40-minute collage, with 20 minutes of ads in between - They even replace the damn music. And Top Gear is prolly one of the best TV show ever with regards to using proper music.
Watch it on the BBC properly, or download them. All those people who think they know how to edit a foreign TV show should be shot in their nostrils.

ahk i could never watch this show. The awful studio 'gags' that they recite from the telepromters is toe curlingly bad. It's like watching your dad dance or something.
And as the meat of the show is the same folk flying about in cars. I generally reach for the remote.
And im sorry OP but Top Gear has been effected by the dreaded TV Americanization. I watched the episode were they took their car into the car wash and apparently set fire to the whole place. And they ran away! Yeah sure!
It reeks a little too much of fake and trying too hard!

A quick question for you Brits: do people over there really buy a Kia to pull a caravan? 'Cause that just ain't right. I know Clarkson didn't like the F150, but it really is a properly done truck, and that's what you need to get yourself above 35 while towing anything that matters.
Originally by: CCP Eris Discordia Top Gear is awesome and I want either of them to be my driving instructor, except James...he¦s too slow I might as well walk
Eh, none of them are particularly great drivers on the track; that's why they have The Stig. James might actually be the best of the three (getting personal instruction from Jackie Stewart and all).
I rolled my eyes when they pitted the 5 series diesel against the petrol version and "proved" the diesel is slower by giving Clarkson the diesel and Stig the petrol. The Stig could have beaten Clarkson in a 3-cylinder Geo Metro.

You most definately don't need 500 bhp to tow a caravan... And it's not a properly done truck. The sceptics can whine what they want, but the F150 review in Top Gear is properly done, and show exactly why it's rubbish...
Besides, in Europe we have Volvo's to tow caravans. And considering i've seen enough of them doing 80 mph on the freeway, i'd say yes, they can tow stuff that matters over 35.
edit: Watch it, and watch it closely. It's rubbish.

An F150 is around 250hp right now. Even the Super-Duties (F250 and up) don't usually do more than 300hp (though their diesels have quite a bit of torque compared to that, as you'd expect).
By his own admission, Clarkson doesn't know much about trucks. Yes, I know the interior is a bit cheap. Ford makes all their interiors cheap. Yes, the steering does have lot of play. In a normal car, those things would matter. In a truck, what matters is how rugged it is and how much weight you can throw on without affecting gas millage. The F-series is very good at that.
The dominance of the F-series is due in part to the fact that Toyota doesn't make a diesel truck for America yet (though that doesn't explain the high sales figures of the F150, which also doesn't come in diesel), and partially because it's done right for what it needs to do. Clarkson should stick to supercars.

He only said that it sucked if you live anywhere in Europe. Which it does, really :D
Still, big problem with it is the suspension and the lack of 4wd... I wonder why it doesn't have it.

I said F150's right now are producing around 250hp. The Top Gear video is a few years old, when they were indeed using a more powerful engine.

The reason Top Gear works is the presenters, the three of them just play off each other so well it makes the show, you could put jezza hamster and captain slow in a white room and have the 3 of them slag each other for a hour and I would watch it and think its awesome. The chemestry between them just works.
QI also a excellent show allways liked Stephen fry.
So I guess its DAVE TV FTW

Bad jokes and too much testosterone and hairy ballsacks to be of any interest for me. These ren't top gear specific problems but occur in most car programs. Funny how taste can differ so much. But I agree on that Britain produces lots of good shows. And above all, good actors!
