...wish they included AT rifles, but thos have a limited use.
also I agree with Keorythe, with the addition of the Mauser 98 family. This rifle saw the Boxer rebellion in 1901, the two great wars, and altho the bolt-action principle can be considered antiquated for today's standarts, it is still considered one of the most precise, reliable and powerfull rifles in the world. And it has 100 years of history to back it. ---

my favourite type of rifle will always be the anti-tank rifle. Sure it's heavy. Sure it's not that good nowadays bar for piercing light armored APC's.
but you have to agree that one of thos can do allot of damage. ---

The main problem was when it was introduced it was said to never need cleaning...
and no, the AK 47 is NOT a better rifle (pre-emptive strike!)... it's woefully inaccurate (doesn't matter if it'll always fire if you cant hit your target) and has a massive recoil that also pushes the rifle off to the left. I really really dont like it, it's ugly as hell and heavy
Now the AK 74 on the other hand...
AK 47 might be innacurate, BUT you could drive a tank over it and it would still work. it is very, very, VERY easy to maintain, and the production patterns of it had so many lax on them that if stones had gunpowder on them, the rifle would shoot them. the gun is damn durable, easy to produce and very easy to maintain. Add that to a good firepower provided by the type of ammo used by her, and you know why the AK 47 is considered the eternal rival of the M16, wich is more expensive, it is a notch down in terms of durability, BUT is more accurate due to a more strict production pattern.
all in all AK-47 = M-16 tbh. Altho I like the AK-47 style better. (the HK G3 is damn cool too) ---

1. Accuracy: Has a rumored 1 inch drop at 2 miles..
2. Combat effectivness: Disables armored vehicles if need be.
3. Innovation: The recoil technology in them is beyond imagination!
4. Handling: A large gun, some having the ability to be taken apart rapidly. So rather mobile.
5. Service length: Implemented not long ago by elite units, will be used for a LONG time.
looks damn good, but I still prefer the Gepard M6 with it's 14.5mm rounds ---

saw pics of the effect of one of thos in ~10mm steel plate.
it surpasses the military issue .50 cal M8 AP ---

Ah, should have noticed the "can" in there. I was picturing a standard issue battle rifle, not an AM weapon. The US wanted to give everyone this abortion of a gun for a while
well, usually putting all the eggs in the same basket is a bad idea ---

Fixed! Like the Barret or any other anti-material rifle, they are rarely far from a troop transport or fixed location like a building or outpost. There is only so much weight that a soldier can carry in addition to their combat gear. 30lbs more than an M16 or AK makes ALOT of difference. Due to this most anti-material weapons rarely are taken on patrol and reserved for special need jobs or as stand off weapons. Even special forces except under special circumstances are reluctant to carry the thing due to its weight when an old .308 round will do the job. Save the superman stories for when in the FOB or in an armchair.
Now while the anti-material rifles are big and make loud booms and can cut a person in half...they are fairly ineffective on the battlefield except in the hands of specialists. You dont stalk and snipe in a firefight. You rarely get targets at long ranges with uncluttered fields of fire in urban settings. They are difficult to deploy quickly.
Also, M1A1 was an upgrade for the M1 Garand. Changes only recently made to it in the past few years have been available to the G3 and FN FAL for a while. I'm just not that impressed by it. The only reason it was issued as a DM rifle was because it was medium caliber rifle in our inventories at the time.
they still look cool th. ---

think it has to do with the fact that the feed area of the clip is rounded. maybe through a spring action of sorts the clip pushes the bullets to the gun, and they turn on that rounded area from sideways to a correct position, or smth like that.
edit: here's a closeup ---
