Now for some objective analysis:
Croatia played well, shut down England and were very good on the counter attack, always looking for waekness in England's defence. England played well at the start of the second half, but were otherwise lacklustre, with little creativity and real commitment to playing good strong football, always second to the ball.
England seemed to have a negative attitude from the start, especially when early goals went against them, they didn't pick themselves up but whined and got disheartened.
Once again England made the mistake of sitting back once the scoreline suited them at 2-2 and Croatia always looked like scoring more (and were perhaps unlucky not to on a couple of occasions). Croatia weren't perfect though and their own defense did not look unbeatable, but it was chance rather than skill at probing down those weaknesses that granted England their goals.

As a neutral scotsman watching the game, i felt the sheer lack of desire and passion from the english players was a disgrace. Not once through the whole game did they look like they wanted to win, not one player can walk off that pitch knowing they gave everything for the cause.
English football maybe needed a wake up call, maybe now people can be put in place to make the players realise what it means to play for your nation.

"aaaawwww aint that a shame better luck next time eh" [pats on head]
Of course if England win they will exclaim to the world that there players are heroes. Woooo ENGERLUND!!!1111 1966 ((I hate when they use that term))
What's that son? You saved 30 people from a burning building and you became horribly scarred doing it, good for you! Here's a Mars Bar go nuts! [pats on Freddy Kruger-esque head]
WhatÆs that?!? you stumbled your overweight, overpaid ass across a pitch and lucked a goal. Well you my son are a HERO

If you were in a fight with a 10yr old. Surely you should be automatically exempt from standing over his bloody corpse whooping and hollering celebrating your triumphant victory. It's just unseemly
Meanwhile piddly little Scotland runs up to the big boys and takes em all on! and fails at the last hurdle.
Loud mouth commentators should be ashamed of themselves! ItÆs embarrassing
grumble rant grumble!
WhereÆs my bitter cake!
I'd say the long term root cause of England's failure on repreated occasions is not just as was pointed out above by Mr. Ealiom, but a problem of attitude on the part of everyone involved. The players must clearly take a lot of the blame, but the general media and attitude of society at large of building up heroes then knocking them down once defeated is endemic.
Tomorrow's newspapers will be full of stories about how awful the players, coach etc. are, not realising that fact that part of the problem is that they make the players feel duty bound and obliged to play for their national team not out of a sense of honour or pride but out of fear of being villified. of course the players are going to retreat into their plush ú5mil homes and ferarri's and creat themselves a glossy shell of non-commital lack of interest.
England in its sports stars breeds a nation of losers, plucky runners up and pariahs who have failed us and are to be burned at the stake (just look at Never-Quite-Made-It-Oh-Well-Quarter-Finals-Aren't-So-Bad Tim Henman)

To be totally clear: I like England players, especially Rooney, Ferdinand, Gerrard and Lampard, but with idiots such as McClaren and Sven Goran, those players will never reach big things. Tbh, half of our national team consist of our manager and his staff. All of them were great players and they work as a team, altough they all know who's the boss. With such logistics, England would rule, but till then... Well, as I said, buy yourself some good TV sets :)

Well done Croatia I think they are a really good side much better techincally played with pride and passion even though they could of sat back as they'd already qualified, made so called premiership stars look woeful and tactically inept.
Not only is McClaren & players to blame. The FA with their massive resources wanted to appoint Phil Scolari but the FA completely messed that up and scratched their heads a appionted McClaren who had done nothing as a club manager. Sack the FA idiots!!
Oh sorry I played so baddly Oh well I'll have a nice summer holiday now. |

Did you see how the Croatian players and team celebrated afterward? They actually smiled and looked happy. not like England who walk around the pitch after some of their games all glum and "if we don't applaud the fans, they'll have a go at us in the papers tomorrow"

Yes, england played pretty badly, croatia gets full kudos on a very good performance.
England fought back very well in the second half, bloody nailbiting stuff, but again defended too deep against a very worthy adversery and paid the price.
Its a shame, but there you go.
As for the anti-english brigade, meh, so full of bile, pretty pathetic to be frank.
And to close, good luck to croatia in the championships, i hope you do well.

Like I said before, they got what they deserved. If they'd beaten Croatia after playing like they have been, it would have been an injustice for Croatia.
Football in England is like a vicious cycle. The public and media get at the players because they're greedy and lack passion. The players become dispassionate because the public is always getting at them. Its going to take a big change in attitude on the players' part to break the cycle, because the odds of millions of fans simultaneously changing attitude is slim to none. If England start playing like they enjoy it again, public perception has no-where to go but up... ------

I've got to disagree with you on this one Spoon. Ok so the England Football team sucks balls but we've known that for about 6-8 years now. However take a look at people like Paula Radcliffe, Nicola Cooke, Ellen MacArthur, the England Rugby team, Louis Hamilton (bit of an arse but he can drive a bit). Don't tar all these performers with the same brush as the footballers.
As for Henman, in the end he wasn't good enough and admitted as much himself. He had a very good career but just didn't quite make it. No shame in that.
On a related but different note can someone please do something about BBC's commentators, partisan, self-indulgent, ignorant and rude to a man, and so England-centric it's embaressing. Croatia have been the best team in our qualifying group from the off and were always likely to get a result against us.

This result does not really surprise me after the abysmal campaign. Honestly, for years and years now, England's national side has been disappointing more often than not, yet that is ONLY a surprise if you superficially look at the top Premier League clubs and their style of playing.
All those top clubs have foreigners who take care of the moments of brilliance. Take them away and you'll get the style of playing that the english national side is showing, and against teams who know to keep possession and have technically gifted players, it is not enough to come out on top.
I am sorry to say but this campaign has imo shown that it's not McClaren's fault only, but that simply this squad isn't good enough.

i cant understand how some people are acutally suprised that england are out?. We would have been out last weekend had it not been for a luck win by Israel!.
Mclaren has said he will not resign which means he eithers knows he wont get the sack by the gutless monkeys at the head of the FA or he wants a nice little paycheck to see him off into the sunset.
TBH the players have to take a huge part of the blame, iv often advocated that the under 21 England side should have been brought up to the 1st team and the muppets who where out there today dropped, at least the youngsters show passion in their games. It's also a compete joke that the bloke who made the biggest impact on the field when he came on for England plays in a micky mouse league in the USA. Lampard went missing all game as usual.
I never wanted England to go through to the Euro's this time tbh, the whole England setup is a utter disaster zone and has been for a long time, had we gone through tonight the *****s would have been painted over but now they have no choice, and this will be for the better.

Absolutely agree
I mean c'mon what kind of football is that --> get the ball in the box on the Cokroach's head and pray he will luckily get it down on someones foot?!? I mean what is that???? Football?!? No gentleman - that kind of football you can not see in Croatian 5th division anymore
Any yes - only bright thing in whole tonights match (talking about English side) was that brilliant Beckham's curve for Cokroach and his scoring. Nothing else! absolutely nothing.
After all ladies and gentleman - you really do not deserve to be on EURO.
Lets face it guys - England national team at this moment belongs to European 2nd division
