Hello everyone,
I am returning to EVE Online after being gone for 2 years. Even when I wasn't playing EVE, I was frequently thinking about returning to EVE. Obviously, I love this game and if it wasn't for other great games being released regularly (Mass Effect, BF3, etc.), reexperiencing older classics periodically (Baldur's Gate Complete, Panzer General, etc.) and a pack of friends who "don't want to play that spreadsheet game", I probably would have never left. Well, I decided that I am going to do something I enjoy and stop following the pack, even if that means playing alone. It feels good making that decision.
With that said, what is going on with the new forums; it is abysmal! Every single page of content has a delay before it loads. I feel like I'm connected to the internet with 56k modem. I'm a hardware person, so I don't know a lot about software, but is this some kind of Flash thing? What was wrong with the old forums? Is there a way to improve performance... on the forums? The game plays just fine. (My first post was lost too, by the way).
Thanks. Here is the relevant technical information
broadband cable connection (wired, no wi-fi or shared) Windows 7 x64 SP1 (installed on SSD) i7 860 8GB RAm ATI Radeon 5700HD etc.
I can post a dxdiag if you need it. |

No, you are just experiencing the new and crappier forums.
Heavy in graphics by design, completely bad by implementation, they are worse and less performing and with less features than the old forums.
Why did they implement them? Because CCP have the "awesome" complex. They get aroused by a new concept and WILL slam it in your face, even if it's half done, buggy, nonfunctional. See New Neocome for further example.
Why have they not removed this forum and replaced it with something incredibly better, like i.e. a 1990 freeware other forum software? Because they HAD to reinvent the wheel. A square wheel. Nyx in hi sec: http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/7929/highsecnyxforsale.jpg |

To be fair, people tend to look on the old forums with rose colored glasses. They weren't great at all. They ate posts all the time by by virtue of the timeout. We have similar rigs though my broadband pipes are much fatter and these forums can be rough. Technically fat pipes don't actually make much difference for surfing anyway. Latency and packet loss are king in that arena. Eve forums historically suck at both.
Once they went to SSL (note the https prefix) with these new forums it got worse for a spell and we were innundated with redirects to a static error page that was just awful. They've actually improved them a lot in the last two months to what I would consider as good as the old days. Which still sucks but whatever.
If anyone ever looks at you and says, "Hold my beer, watch this,"-á you're probably going to want to pay attention. |

It's hard to believe but they actually payed money for it. You remember when they took it down because anybody could fancy himself as a moderator? That was the part they made themselves. The game has a tutorial that gives you a mining laser and a railgun and tells you to go shoot rocks and red crosses. It teaches you nothing else. It's been that way for 8 years, so are you really surprised that there are people who aren't aware that this is a pvp game? --Jafit McJafitson |

Oh and don't forget to copy past your posts before clicking the button "post" because it happens quite regularly for long meaningful posts to simply disappear with no means of recovery.
If it ever happen to you don't forget to bump this thread https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=63550&find=unread |

Sounds like me. :)
Anyway, forum performance for me is pretty good in Chrome and it displays very nicely on my tablet.
Can't say I miss the old forums tbh. Only problem I have is that this forum WILL occasionally eat your posts, so I always hit ctrl+a & ctrl+c before submit. |

Thanks to Chrome I never lose a post to ganking... almost.
And while the speed is usually good, there are times where I get fed up and click the reload button. |

This above all. It's become such a habit for me that I do it with any forum or email now.
Btw...welcome back OP. To stand before a man at an inquisition, knowing that he will rejoice when we die, knowing that he will commit us to the stake and its horrors without a moment's hesitation or remorse if we do not satisfy him, is not an experience much less cruel because our inquisitor does not whip us or rack us or shout at us. |
