If CCP didnt update the graphics engine, they wouldnt be able to attract more new players and some players may end up leaving in the future for upcoming space MMOs. Its a matter of survival :p _____

Apparently, tritnity will solve alot of LAG issues, specially client side lag, as most of the rendering will be on the GFX and not CPU..
The updated gfx is a bonus

The gfx look okay (although a bit boxy from the WIP's), not too bothered about anything else in the patch tbh.
Still, some patches you love, others you loathe and others you just don't get excited about

What's the point of a new expansion?
To give a game more features. Thus, features = the point.

Wrangler: will the new graphics engine get bottled up on the GPU? Or will the new graphics engine be able to utilize both the CPU and GPU under heavy load.
For that matter, will the new graphics engine be able to utilize dual cores? Or even quad cores for that matter?

Lots of good stuff to look forward to, regardless of age.
Massively improved graphics engine. Huge UI improvements, which are just the very beginning of UI improvements. New drone AI, drone hotkeys, drone control settings, new drones. Supposedly huge client performance improvements.
Not sure if the new server balancing software will be in this one, I've seen hints that they are working on it, but not hard info about when it comes out.

I think what is happening is that the all the regular flame topics now get shot down in the first page or so and noone bother to post in them anymore so they need a new one to keep thier emotainment level up..

Ugly? GTFO! Hell, I still regard Super Mario Bros beautiful.
Well switching the engine from CPU to GPU for lag reasons seems fair enough.
But I still wonder if making larger or more efficient, "coping" highways ever solved anything, less lag surely means more capacity, more capacity = more people and more people = MORE LAG! Am I missing something?

Ugly is opinion and also relative. Note how i said in another year or so. By then, games would look even better than games like crysis do now. Compared to that, EVE would be a POS graphics wise if it stayed like it is now.

Personally, I don't regard things like graphics as very important. It is gameplay that makes or breaks a game-- I've never heard someone say that they stopped playing a game because it was "ugly" or "outdated," but I know people who stop playing games of all stripes when a better system comes out. "Better system" means different things to different people, of course.
Eyecandy is always a draw, but it doesn't keep people coming back. And I don't know about over in Europe, but in this area of the U.S. marketing is purely word of mouth. Graphics don't mean a thing when there's no advertising to draw people in with, other than the odd trailer at GenCon.
Of course maybe I'm just an old fogey who doesn't "get" gamers, but the crowd I run with will ask "Does this game accomplish what it advertises? Is it fun to play? Is it a cookie cutter game or does it contain a bit of originality?"
From this standpoint, upgrading the graphics engine to reduce lag is the point. Adding exploration environments all over the cluster is part of lower midrange player retention, I think. Allowing corporations to advertise specific needs without spamming all over creation is good for helping nurture the virtual communities created in Eve. Adding higher content ships for mission running caters to a large segment of the Eve population, potentially increasing their time in Eve, if only because of a longer skill grind needed to reach the pinnacle. Special forces, which tends to draw smaller gangs, are getting a boost with the other new battleships.
Reduction of lag and retention of targeted audiences seem to be the primary points of Trinity, from my point of view.
