So im buying a new graphics card this weekend, my budget is about $270 atm(thats 1700 SEK). Currently i've been leaning towards an XFX GeForce 8600GTS XXX
Specs are:
PCI Express x16 Core Clock (MHz)730 Shader Clock (MHz)1566 Memory Clock (MHz) 1130(2260 Effective) 256mb of GDDR3 Memory Dual Dual-Link DVI + HDTV-Out DirectX« 10 Shader Model 4.0 NVIDIA« PureVideoÖ HD Support NVIDIA« SLIÖ Support HDCP Ready
So far ive seen about 88% average rating on all reviews i read, most were over 90%. Few naggy ones at 65-75 ish that seemed to ignore price.
I've heard that this card is also rather loud, but then again thats not much of a problem for me.
So what are your thoughts on this card? anyone tried it? And can you find a better preforming card for less money? Because this is about as high as i can go.
Currently i got an AMD 64 3800 dual core and 1gb of ram.(i intend to upgrade those later on aswell as my motherboard)

Edited by: Meiyang Lee on 23/11/2007 16:03:21 If you wish to go for a directX 10 capable card, i'd personally go for a 8800GT, it should be about the same price (ie around $250) and will out perform your 8600GTS by a very long way, infact the 8800GT will in many cases out do a 8800GTS which costs a good deal more to buy.

AFAIK this card im thinking of is default overclocked and thus preforms similar to the lower price 8800GT cards while still being cheaper. Besides the one 8800GT card i can afford is not in stock for another 2 weeks

I have been recommended the GT as well, although i am too poor to make the purchase atm. Seems like a bargin compared to the GTS.
I think that ATI drivers are too unstable for thier DX10 cards to be worth buying , not 100% on that though, it may only be the cross-fire drivers that are junk.

Edited by: Meiyang Lee on 23/11/2007 23:54:31 ATI has always had a rather shaky reputation for their early drivers for any generation of card. If you check the release notes for Catalyst 7.10 (the latest) the amount of improvements to performance and stability for the 2000 series is staggering, considering the 3000 series has only just been released, the first release reference drivers are probably not to good both in terms of performance and stability.
A few months from now they should be great though, buying an ATI after they have a chance to make some decent drivers for them is usually a better idea. I use an ATI myself at the moment (an x1950 Pro) and it runs perfectly, but considering what one sometimes hears about the newly released ones, its usually better to wait a couple of months for better drivers to come out, and usually you want stability when you install a new card.

Yeah a friend recommended the 8800 GT. but the card i was aiming for has scored similar in preformance tests. Its a factory overclock and is the fastest in the 8600GTS series, its even faster then the 8800 GT. However it only has 256mb, http://www.komplett.se/k/ki.aspx?sku=334590&view=detailed#ProductTabs
There is a 8600 GTS with 512, but its slower. http://www.komplett.se/k/ki.aspx?sku=341637
Compare that to the 8800 GT http://www.komplett.se/k/ki.aspx?sku=342177
They both preform nearly exactly the same, except for the 8600GTS XXX which is still the fastest but with only 256mb memory. The 8800 Actually preforms less then the 8600GTS with 512mb, as it is slower. The 8600GTS XXX remains the fastest of the lower price cards but has only 512mb memory.
So the 8800 GT is not recommended, if youre getting an 8800 card get the GTS versions, theyre faster and with more memory. but they cost alot. IF you want better preformance then the 8800, you gotta pick the XFX versions of the 8600 GTS cards.
What i dont understand is why people seem to think that only because the 8800GT is in the later series makes it better. The specifications clearly states that it is the slowest of the 3 cards.(+ its more expensive) *signature removed - please email us to find out why (include a link) - Jacques([email protected]) EVE is like the "Fisherman's Friend" of MMOs. I'd recommend an 8800GT, or if your budget is a bit smaller: HD3870 (or if even smaller: HD3850)
It's very important that you realise the speed isn't all that matters. If that were the case, just about all ATI cards would be better then their NVIDIA equals, which is definately not the case.
Check the following benchmarks to get a real comparison between GFX cards;
Benchies (Check the entire review for more benchmarks)
Here's another list, which includes more cards, but doesn't have the latest cards (ie. 8800GT, and HD3800 series) yet.
Ontop of that, the speed can easily be overclocked as well, so paying much more money for a factory OC card, isn't always the best move. It does however, void your warranty if you OC it yourself (not that they can prove it though).

I'd say go with anything other than the 3850/3870 because they aren't actually a new design technically they should of been named 2XXX I'd like a real sig feel free to share ideas on one. |
