Question for all you old mission foxes...with how much sp, in which ship class did you do yours FIRST lvl3? How did it go? When it was? Did you ever lost ship in lvl3 mission...and why?
And one practical question: rats usually spawn closer to your ship or not? I wonder because I love long range combat....(with close range rats preferred (>.<)
Thank you for reading, and I hope that you don`t mind to dig some your old memory's.

Attempted or completed?
Completed was Spy Stash in a Jag. First attempt was (I think) Intercept the Smugglers in a Rifter. That didn't go so well.
I've lost ships twice in L3s: a Jag the second time I did Spy Stash. I hadn't been doing L3s long, and was just getting*****y, and didn't know about the full aggro trap there. And I lost a Wolf somewhere along the line, but I don't remember where. I just remember hating myself for being stupid afterwards. Any time I lose a ship to NPCs I feel like a jackass.
On the starting range question, it really varies a lot. Most L3s don't put you in aggro range though, or do it only with a few weak ships. * * * In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

I used a thorax and it went well. I can't remember which level 3 it was. I had some over 3 mil sp and that was a year ago. Never lost any ships on level 3's because after doing a few i decided missions are boring and took that Thorax to 0.0 where I indeed lost it repeatedly mainly because i was doing stupid things like ratting drunk and thinking i can take on those 2 bs + 3 ewar frig spawns in it.

Ages ago, Maller with oversized AB, way before those got the agility nerf.
That was the first ship I did level 3's by myself in. Did some before that with two friends, but can't remember what ship I was piloting myself. They had a Thorax and a Rupture. Sounds like overkill, but warp scrambling Mordus back then were -mean-.

I was in a Hurricane, about one month in to the game and didn't have the support skills for it. Very first lvl 3 was Damsel in Distress. They tore the ship apart and I went back to doing lvl 2's in a Caracal

Wow, you go back and bring up memories of the old trusty Ferox. That's right, the other Caldari ship not named Drake. For us not so young guys that was our only option and it was a beast , you could set up a mean passive tank and go all day in it. Of course, no where near the capabilities of today's drake with rigs, but back then we didn't all them fancy tools.
I never lost a ship in level 3's, upgraded from Ferox to Drake and just do level 3's when I am bored and trying to raise corp standings to save on taxes and such.
BTW, that was done in under 3 million SP's, the only T2 item I had was Large Shield Extender II's, the best damn module on the Ferox.

First level 3 was about 2 years ago, Capture the Informant I think it was and I was in a very poorly fitted Thorax. I completed the mission but it did not go well.
The first level 3 mission I tried in a Battlecruiser was Black Market Hub in my Brutix. The fitting wasn't bad at all, but I was totally unprepared for the sentry guns on the next stage. Lost my ship.

My first level 3 was in a Cyclone Battlecruiser. I think I had level 2 BC, level 3 in medium guns, gunnery was probably missing some support skills. I had no decent missile skills, I could only use light missiles and rockets. I doubt I had much more than 2 million skill points, possibly 1.5 million. I completed the mission but it was tough. I think that Cyclone was the first ship I actually fitted properly, within a few days I had learn the appropriate skills and fitted it with my standard fitting of 5x650mm Arties, 3xHeavy Launchers, a Large Shield Booster, AB, 2 Shield Hardeners ( rat specific ), a Shield Resistance Amp ( rat specific ), 3 PDSs and a Gyro. I still have the Cyclone.
The first time I lost a ship in a level 3 was when I was running an AC Hurricane in an Angel Blockade, this was probably when I was at 3 million SP. I got too close to a few Angel BCs and they ate me for breakfast. I came back in my Cyclone ( see above ) and finished the mission with few problems.
In my experience long range weapons tend to work better ( or rather safer ) in missions than short range ones. But short range ones are more fun.

My first Lvl 3 was in a Drake built with a passive tank setup probably pretty close to those suggested on these forums. That was probably a million SP ago at something like 2.8 Mil. Don't remember which it was, but it didn't go so bad. At first I might have had to warp out a couple times on the hard Lvl 3s, but I sail through them pretty easily now (as long as I don't let me drones shoot Kruul first ).
I lost one Drake in a Lvl 3 storyline mission, Whispers in the Dark, I think it was. The last mission has you take out a structure, but as soon as you start firing you trigger full room aggro with half a dozen BSes. It would have been fine if the full room aggro didn't instantly lag my machine. It was a good half a minute or more before I could click on anything, then I tried to warp out and my ship blew up mid-warp. Needless to say, from now on I'll be hitting warp before I fire on the structure.

Time for an embaressing story.
I'm pretty sure my first level 3 was done in an incredibly noob fitted Domi. We're talking lasers, shield and armour reppers and I vaugely suspect even overdrives. I've been in the game 4 years and I think this can't have been more than 2 and a half ago. It was back when agents gave out implants as rewards alot and I was working for some ammo-crazy agent who has kept me pretty well supplied on medium charges to this day.
And even worse, I have lost a Domi in a level 3 mission. Luckily, I then got a Mega and quickly qualified from mission noob academy. Didn't really take all that long after that to get into level 4s solo and its been good from there on.
Yes, these are my ships. Yes, I'm an empire hugging mission runner. |

I did my first lvl 3 about a week ago. I have 4m sp, but only about 1m in combat skills (including Spaceship Command). I was flying a Dominix in my first mission, and to be honest I thought it would be alot harder. After 5 minutes into the mission, I just left my drones to fight, made the armor repairer active and went afk. Honestly, it was really easy and you shouldn't worry about it. Steroids - Just do it! |

i used a rat loot equipped cyclone which i slowly updated with T2 stuff when my skills would allow. only really had one mission that i couldn't complete with it and that was the "Portal to War" mission.
now i use a tempest and just sit there like a giant Pill Box dispensing death.

my first lv 3 was damsel in distress ran it in a brutix its a hot mission. i went in in a shuttle first to make a bm (the wreck of the shuttle)came back at +100km had to jump out several times and back to the farthest wreck each time.by the time i was done i had wrecks spread for 320km.i had about 3 mill sp and the ship was very poorly fitted. first ship i lost was a rigged fitted megathron in 'portal to war' a corp mate called for help after the fleet warped in.5 of us went in we lost my meg and a raven that day and 5% hull from loseing a hurricain.all mainly due to the fact none of us read the mission write up about how killer the fleet is.

I did my first lvl3 yesterday with my Thorax, it was Damsel in Distress too. I managed to kill some henchman's (the weakest of them ) and provoking all the ships to chase me, leaving Krull's Hub uncovered. I gone away and warped at 0km, blow up the hub and took the Damsel. I don't know if i had won by fighting Krull + reinforcements, i think i'll try another lvl3 mission anyway.

Did first level 3 in a Maller once T2 reps, hardners & energy management were trained - still brings back a smile. Once the skills and the money were there I moved up into a Retribution; now a dead end but was my first T2 ship... felt like it was made of awsome. |

Here are some tips that might help:
1. Choose a ship BattleCruiser Class it best. 2. Always fit for the NPC faction. i.e. Sansha EM 3. Train your ship to lvl 4 skill 4. Go with a friend, you will learn the mission. 5. Never stay if you get in trouble, warp out 6. Bookmark a structure, and come back at the distance you like. 7. Train your Shield/Armor resists to level 4. 8. Read the forum, lots of good information here. 9. Visit www.eveinfo.com pick up points on the missions. 10.Train your high slot modules to lvl 4 for damage to the NPC. 11.Don't do Worlds Collide its a death trap. 12.Try to get T2 Shields or Armor as fast as possible. 13.Good Luck.

I lost a myrm back when hadn't yet trained any tanking skills, don't quite remeber exactly which mission it was, I had shot the final mission trigger (who was accompanied by two BCs) I thought I might as well see if I could wack them for the loot eventhough they were already nicking into my armor, by the time I realized where it was going, my poor agility skills made my aligntime too slow to get away and my shiny new myrm was blown to pieces . This was when I started training tanking skills :D

I did a few L3s in an T2 Assault Launcher Caracal yesterday. I thought it'd be overkill but I found the first couple L3 missions challenging. Then I got to the Damsel in Distress where it warps you in the middle of everything and they all aggres at once. I warped out and came back in at a distance. I asked for help in local and went back in. If I kept everything at 40km or so I could pick them off one at a time very slowly, I killed maybe 5-7 cruisers and I was just about to warp out a second time when help arrived and we took the rest out. By the time I was done I was 221km away from the Pleasure Hub.
I should note I was using passive resistance amps and only kin/therm (some of the Rats were using Thunderbolts so that hurt), plus a T1 Damage Control, Medium C5L and boost amp. Not cap stable of course.
I'm going back to L2s while I train for a Drake. Ideally I'll have T2 Heavy Missiles and active hardeners by then.
I was so happy to get to L3s but they were much harder than I thought.
Anyone every use a Hawk with great success?

I flew most of them in my Rupture (cruiser) back then, it's surprising how much the small sig radius helps. I now fly a lot of them in my Wolf.
There are some that are just too hard for a cruiser, like Mordus Headhunters, so I used a Cyclone.
And yup, I have lost two Cyclones and some cruisers in L3 missions. Aggro the wrong thing and you get it :)

Edited by: Goatluver on 11/12/2007 13:46:43 I asked the same question of myself, and realised I was being just a little scared about the whole thing. I too had 4m Sp (though I wastd 800K when I rolled my toon), so effective 3.2m SP in the right places. Most support skills upto 4, guns upto 5, drones 5, and BC 4.
Strangely enough I also had Damsel in Distress which I ran in my trusty Harbinger. I had to warp out once due to the amount of damage I was taking. But that's because I didn't fit any rat specific hardeners. Named lasers as I'd not long lost a BC so couldn't afford T2, but I still destroyed them al pretty quickly. My drones were more efecient too due to the increase size of the rats.
Be sure to insure your ship, fly out, have fun, run away if you need to, then go back with a friend.

I accually got my first lvl3 mission tonight. at 1.9mil sp. I ran it in my trusty drake with T1 fittings. it was a rush knowing they were bigger then me, then i warped in to find a bunch of frigates and had to go back and get my caracal i had been running level 2's in
All in all a fun experience at level 3's not as much isk as i thought from them over level2's but definately more bounties since most of my 2's were drones :(

i did my 1st lv3 after i'd been playin in 0.0 for a couple of years so i'd prob got about 25-30 mill sp's at the time. did them in an enyo, which i used up to the point of lv4's. can,t recall what was 1st mission, but was very nervious about how well it could take the dmg (which it did cope quite well, just gotta keep moving)

I had been playing for about ~4 months, so maybe 4m sp? I have never lost a ship. Why? Because the Drake is passive tanked and is lag-proof and nearly noob-proof. You can't go wrong when you're passively tanked, no cap to worry about...
I nearly lost ships in L2's because of active tanking/lag issues, but had a buddy to help me. I was down to sub-20% structure after my client crashed and I rebooted, God, I was hyperventilating. Losing a caracal now isn't nearly as bad as it would've been then. L4's in a Drake are safer, but take a good deal longer without the necessary skills.

My first level 2 scared me so much(In my kestrel, haha) that I made sure I was prepared for my first lvl 3. I fitted an active-shield AND armour tanked Drake with a mix of light and heavy missiles (But no drones at all - I didn't know what drones were)and warily kited the rats as best I could. I didn't have to warp out(It was lvl 3 Duo of Death, I think), but it was still pretty scary(I was repping armour). I had about 1.6 mill SPs at the time.
Soon after that, I joined my corp(which is in 0.0) and after losing my Drake while flying there, they gave me some pointers ("Drakes Don't armour tank very well!") and missions have been easy since then.
As a newbie, I once lost a Kestrel in a 3/10 complex, but besides that, I've never lost a ship in pve. I fit ships carefully. Although when I first got into my Raven, lvl 4 Vengeance almost killed me(30% structure) hehe.

afk never equals fun. afk, if you didn't know, means away from keyboard, which means you personally are deriving no fun from the game at that time. What you do get is ISK while not being at the keyboard.
So, the question "is it fun?" does not apply at all. I'm guessing for fun he runs Lvl 4s, 5s, or PvPs....

The Black Market Hub in a Caracal @ 1 month old. I was able to keep at range and pick them off. Same with next few L3s.
Then I got The Blockade - and lost the Caracal. So I went back and tried to find a combo of hardeners, extenders, and boosters that would let me tank the missile spammage, but lost that Caracal too. Tried again a few more times, but had to warp out. Just couldn't do it with the skills I had then. That was the 1st mission I declined.
I was hoping to get The Blockade again once I had a Drake, but never did.
I might go back and try it again with a T2 fitted Caracal one of these days, see if that's doable.
Have fun!

Seems like im not the only one that got shafted with Damsel in Distress as a first L3; at about 1.8 mill SP. I warped in with my new Drake, all decked out with most expensive T1 stuff, 50 sec later I blow up. Ah well the time it took me to earn the money for a new drake + fittings I trained up the support skills. :)
