It is human nature to always have something to consider as 'Evil', something to hate, something to blame for all the bad things.
Just what is that evil thing? How do we define something as "Evil", a term that we use so often? A year ago, when someone said 'Evil' the first thing to come to your mind was Sabaoth. But today, with the appearance of galactic-scale piracy, gigantic corporate alliances that spread over entire regions of space and the change of policy in the Amarrian empire under Doriam's rule, the situation is very different.
We decided to take some of the finest political minds of our generation, those who have seen it all in EVE already, and try to figure out - what is the New Face of Evil? We've sat down with Jade Constantine, HellGremlin, Torkaj, Ulrich and our reporter Atandros all in one think-tank, ready to grind down our NeoComs with arguements to make the final call, and also clear up a bit of the complex EVE political system while we're at it.
Will it be the Curse Alliance? Or perhaps it's M0o, our 'favorite' pirate corporation? Could be Evolution. Or maybe the face of evil is still Sabaoth? Alot has changed, and we've decided to settle it down once and for all.
Here are some quotes from the full interview, which can be found here, that should give you a small taste of what we have:
"KnightDelta: So what does that make of the existing pirate corporations? It's no secret that there are many small self-proclaimed pirates around EVE, camping gates and killing everyone they can. What makes that evil, while the corporations who do the same aren't evil? Jade Constantine: Oh i would say murder in Eve has lost the moral element. HellGremlin: It is after all entirely too common."
"HellGremlin: Politics have fallen by the wayside in Eve, conflicts are settled in the most primitive and brute-force method available. Someone transgresses against you? Tack guns to your battleship, bring your fifty friends and kill a few of their ships, force them to dock and make fun of them."
"Einheriar Ulrich: Either every seperate corporation, has its own agenda, and are not subtle to obey the legal enforcements laws. And why should they, some of them rival the military might in the empires."
"Torkaj: Evil is depriving the free flow of knowledge and information to all."
"Jade Constantine: But I do truly see restrictive territorial alliances as the greatest "evil" we face and thus its very easy to smile at the toppling of a monolithic edifice."
"Torkaj: Evolution is more evil than CA because its a hegemony. CA is an alliance, and thus much more at risk of breaking up. Einheriar Ulrich: So true."
So go ahead, read the interview and vote on our website for who you think deserves to get this year's Face of Evil Award.

Evil as far as I percieve it, can be an action that destructs, yet it can also be an action that creates something that lead to destruction of other things or itself and it can also be a creation that tries to stop other creation or creational processes.
I always wonder why the humans didn't go further from the good and evil thinking, it is so simple and yet so insightless, on my humble opinion Good and Evil are washed out term.
Perhaps we should went on and rather reinterpret on to the notion "will this action lead to creating something or to destructing something". And for a person to arrive at the destination one seeks, she or he needs to constantly reflect what he is doing like a traveller walking a long path with many arms.
On a last note: Ones destiny is the path (s)he chooses, yet the path is created by her-/himself constantly, he is not determined by a higher will, however a higher will might take a subtle influence the person itself will do the rest. --------------------------------------

I find myself in full agreement with Hellgremlin, there exists almost an atmosphere of hatred against RP'ers. Most notably at the hands of certain, piracy groups. But it is truly the organizations and corporations that engaged in RP that were the most memorable. I remember the complex and involved politics and intrigue of the time, i myself was frequently involved with such dealings.
While i, like the infamous Shogaatsu have only recently returned to eve, i might well hope to contribute my own bit to add to the intrigue of the eve universe.

But there still are certain pro-RP pirate groups around (like ours). Of course, the problem is that whilst conducting piracy it's very difficult to conduct RP at the same time due to the game system. However, that's not too bad a problem. The RP focus can come elsewhere. Of course, currently the "market" for pirate RP seems rather bleak, but we're working at it and hopefully there are others.

Names one has not seen in many months suddenly reappear to discuss who is evil, rather intresting one would say. Why exactly did the Amarr network end up with this bunch of old men of no power and Jade as it's panel on this topic? ________________________________

Edited by: KnightDelta on 07/03/2004 19:51:47 Torkaj, HellGremlin, Ulrich and Jade - people without power? This just comes to prove one of problems that we mentioned.. A quote: HellGremlin: "A carefully crafted image, something no-one bothers with nowadays. With the domination of Moo and Evolution, groups decidedly go against any sort of RP background, coupled with the disappearance of those community members most adept at crafting such imagery, the Eve community shifted in bandwidth from a mix of in-game deeds and roleplay background to purely in-game."
Power shouldn't be measured according to your number of podkills. There are far more important things than how many shots your gun can release in a second, how big the explosion is or how many pods you've destroyed. These are well-known people, some of EVE's finest, and definately not without power. ________________________________ John "KnightDelta" Hicks Director of The Amarr Network |

These are well-known people, some of EVE's finest, and definately not without power.
You bring up a good point. Power isn't just the amout of firepower you wield, but you shouldn't forget that it is still firePOWER. As such it does play a part in how powerful a person is, even though it may not be solely the source for power.
As you mentioned respect can also be seen as a form of power. But so can diplomatic skills, admiration, hatred, wealth and the firepower I mentioned earlier also play their part into the image that one has attached to himself. There are many things that come together and create the power that one has. When you look at the words I listed and also others that could be listed instead or in addition it is also evident that the very same power is seen differently by different people. Someone who only knows you by name because of the firepower you wielded at some point will have a different image of you than someone who you dealt with firsthand, and even then it is a question of what the dealings you had were about that define how powerful you are in that person's eyes.
The potential power a person/group of people has should also not be mistaken to the real power. A group such an Alliance will always have a potential for a great source of financial wealth, pure numbers and atleast a couple leaders. That doesn't make them truly powerful though, as most can see most alliances out there are bloated inefficient beings without a clear goal and chain of command. ________________________________

Who are HellGremlin and Torkaj?
I have never seen these people flying around or wielding a single bit of influence in the EVE universe to date!
But I have noticed a kind of 'snobbery' about "Oh it was great back in the old times wasn't it".
I wish people would stop harking back to the 'glorious' old days.
If these pilots want to earn my respect then they will have to demonstrate their capabilities NOW through their actions - not through countless people telling us how great they are.
I personally think quotes like this...
HellGremlin: "A carefully crafted image, something no-one bothers with nowadays. With the domination of Moo and Evolution, groups decidedly go against any sort of RP background, coupled with the disappearance of those community members most adept at crafting such imagery, the Eve community shifted in bandwidth from a mix of in-game deeds and roleplay background to purely in-game."
...actually demonstrate just how out of touch Mr. HellGremlin is with the current universal situation!
Words do count a great deal and can have a tremendous influence within the universe - but unless they are backed up with even limited action they are nothing more than hot air.
It is time for these 'oldtimers' to step up to the plate!

I agree with the Amarr scum from PIE, Hardin. Einheriar Ulrich & Jade Constantine I recognize. I have no idea who these other two are.
What I'd like to see is a big interview with all of the various regional alliance 'Heads of State'. I'd also be curious to know who they are. -

Wren, if more Amarr are going to join the cause then I welcome it. It is you as an inferior Minmatar who should be feeling worried
But for now we will have to wait and see. The only Amarr who have so far put their money where their mouth to stand by their principles have been PIE and its CVA allies.
If these 'oldtimers' want to get back involved and join the struggle then fair play to them... but they will have to demonstrate why they are worthy of respect... I hope they do! It would be nice to have some new allies
You terrorist Minmatars really are getting to big for your boots!
