I'm not attempting to diminish the choice before you. In-fact I think you ought to give yourself a bit more credit. You are not simply one cog in a greater machine. You are many sovereign individuals and you have the right to represent yourselves as you see fit. |

But on the other hand this is growing into a serious problem. We have several departments where about 75% of the staff are permanently sick, and they cannot be fired (which is originally a good thing). Problem now is that the remaining 25% get so drowned in work that they quickly burn out and call in sick themselves. It's paralyzing the entire system. There are many people unemployed, hoping for a good job- and the work is there, only the position is occupied by someone who hasn't shown up for a year or so.... /rant (fake edit: I am the 25% )

Implicit in this argument is that the goal should be to pay more taxes. The only reason to have taxes is to accomplish something for the population being taxed.
Nothing is free. And the fact that it is being run being a bureaucracy and funded involuntarily, instead of a system of voluntary exchange, makes it inherently flawed. Populations cannot become smarter or wealthier by stealing from one another in order to do the bidding of some majority (or vocal minority).
In the long run, you just pay more taxes anyway. The PMs and Presidents of the world need to have their gold-plated lifestyles you know. :) |

Kirjava wrote:Explicit though is the fact that in the statistical majority of cases a higher paid job requires either experience or an educational substitute. To receive a return it requires an investment, and if a society has developed a concept of a pension or more importantly a state and its associated beurocracy it requires funding via taxation.
Except there's no return and no actual investment. Taxation has more in common with a gift (if you believe it's going to good use) or simple theft (if you actively oppose how the money is being spent), than it does with a voluntary arrangement predicated on a return on invested capital. A society might -want- a pension (and the business of risk management or "insurance," is basically the model you are looking for), but what government creates is anyhting but an actual pension program. It's simply a debt-funded bureaucracy beholden to nobody except the politically connected.
Kirjava wrote: There are tradeoffs between private and public spending, but it seems historically and statistically that nations with a lower spread in inequality are happier and generally more successful. Much of Scandinavia follows this model for instance.
That seems to be a popular misconception in the socialist world. Scandinavia is quite the exception and not anywhere near the rule. In point of fact, most who study their system admit that ethnic homogeneity and a preexisting work-ethic (atop tremendous natural resources relative to their population) have given them a rare chance to succeed with a massive welfare state that has historically failed elsewhere.
Kirjava wrote: And yes, nothing is free but with respect to natural monopolies and necessities that more often than not state actors are more effective than private enterprises. Point in context the medical industry where the US model uses 17.6% of gdp against the British NHS which consumes 8% while covering the entire population and having the second best dental system. Water within the UK has privately owned under invested regional monopolies in England versus the still nationalised Scottish Water.
Another common misconception. There is no such thing as a "natural monopoly," and in-fact necessities like water and power utilities were, prior to state regulatory overtaking them, subject to healthy competition. I can't say whether or not the healthcare system of Britain is more or less efficient than that of the US, but both are heavily regulated and inefficient relative to what they could be in they were not so governed. I don't know or care much about the way governments rank their own health systems, but I do travel to Canada (where dental is not under the social healthcare system) in order to see the very best dentist for my money. Nationalized utilities are ugly enough (the condition of both out nations' power grids is abysmal), I wouldn't trust a bureaucrat with my health.
Kirjava wrote: It boils down to good governance and regulation, either by elected officials or a transparent market, but both of these models requires an underlying educated and well informed population, of which I think it is not theft to fund, but a necessity implicit in a capitalist democracy of any composition.
It does boil down to governance and regulation, but officials are not transparent and will never favor the market so long as the state educates. It is simple a conflict of interest that no society, democracy or otherwise, can survive. I don't necessarily subscribe to the idea that theft is implicit and necessary to keep society in good working order, but at the very least I would have to argue that much MUCH more needs to be taken out of the hands of the bureaucrats. So long as they control the vast majority of our economies and by-extension, our daily lives; there's very little to be done about them driving our people into the dirt for the preservation of their special privileges.

Kirjava wrote: Were a nation to invest in this via a tax funded education system, it puts that nation at an advantage for the lifetime of that individual. Taking the differential between their say High School level of education and in may cases being a net drain on the Treasury, a small investment early on will increase earning capacity, and push income into net positive territory. This is risk management, and looking towards the long term future as opposed to short to mid term, which a nation with a fiat currency is capable of doing.
Again, I simply must disagree with your use of the word investment. I just don't believe for a second that forking over a lump of my cash to the treasury means that some significant portion of it will go to improve the dilapidated education system because I understand that the allocation of that money is decided by unelected bureaucrats and weather-vane politicians who know nothing of the subject. Fiat central bankers are thinking anything but long-term. In-fact their short-term inflation is causing the dearth of economies the world over. The same short-sighted jingoism can be seen across the bureaucratic spectrum. If that's an investment, I would like to withdrawal my funds from it.
Kirjava wrote: I am looking at this from a national point of view, not the individual. Methinks we have a fundamental disagreement as to the nature of a tax as a function.
I do think that's the case, but you should understand that the "nation," is nothing more than a collection of individuals. There is no real point in speaking of it as a human entity, any more than a flock of geese is a bird. What's good for "the nation," in invariably not good for some, most, perhaps all the people there-in, because what is good "for the nation," is always decided by the bureaucrats and not the people themselves.
Kirjava wrote: In essence, a nationalised entity is a publicly company whose shares are owned by the state, a similar structure but with the priority being on supply availability and cost mitigation. For the record, I would only be in favour of nationalised entities where such a natural monopoly emerged, utilities such as water, electricity and gas in the distribution networks where production granularity was low for those to be included too (electricity distribution on the National Grid versus a power plant).
Again, those natural monopolies are myths. There is no barrier to entry high enough to prevent speculation. If a power company needs 10 billion to open a competing plant in order to enter a lucrative market, that investment will be made. Unlike the "public company," who simply surfs on their ennobled status into a state-mandated profit margin. The disaster of our national grids should be evidence enough of how tragically flawed this approach has been.
Kirjava wrote: The reason I quoted the health care systems as a percentage of GDP was to illustrate the efficiency of such a system.
I will have to seriously object to this. An efficient healthcare system does not go hundreds of billions of dollars into debt and unfunded liabilities. That is the very definition of inefficiency.
Kirjava wrote: I'm not a socialist by any stretch, but from where I'm standing with the data it appears that a hybrid mixed economy like both our countries enjoy to varying degrees has through national competition ended up as the superior model, on the precondition the respective electorates are sufficiently well informed and educated upon the matters involved.
I think you espouse more socialist ideas than your realize. Most likely because you were attended to thoroughly by public education, which is no fault of your own. Unfortunately both our mixed economies are becoming less free by the day and the old free-market competition that built them both into economic power-houses is merely a cloud of industrious smoke on the horizon of our past. Not that I long for the latter days of industrial hardship, but I think the odds of us electing our way out of this mess are slim to none.
To the best of my knowledge, the very goal of the elected official is to keep the electorate as stupid and dependent as possible. They seem to be doing a damned fine job of this. |

Alas, Europe! You were once a shining example of many independent sovereign nations. What hath the technocrats wrought upon these great people who brought us a Renaissance in thought and technology and opened an entire world to the trade of goods? Federated and central power corrupts and destroys only. Take the living example of the failing US economy and its authoritarian figureheads. There is no nectar in this garden, only decay.
The offer of central power is an offer of something not worth having. Those people that tell you, with your great history, that you are not great until you have some super-national authority are not friends. Don't think of that as a gift. Think of it as a poison chalice. Push it aside and govern yourselves, as you always have. Much more happiness comes of self-direction than the imposition of a massive bureaucracy.

My jealousy sends its regards. Explain that logic as i just cant see any. Not that PETA are rational anyway but this is just a moment.
They've simultaneously blocked the entrance of several diesel 60+ mpg cars into the market this year as well as proposed a hefty tax on top of what most states are already taxing gasoline.
I don't know how they'd get the political traction to pass the latter, but it's scary enough to hear them articulate such nonsense.

Yeah I'd say during the late 60's and early 70's there were probably some popular hits that broke the mold. Popular opinion at that time was really against the ongoing war and all the wacky political disasters (bay of pigs, watergate, etc.). Still, if you look at the most popular genre of that era (westerns) the films which championed the dissident or the general populace rather than the state agency of the Sheriff, Pinkerton, etc. were few and far between.

Avatar is an inversion of the standard model because it came about during the Bush era when the left was still anti-war. It also more or less labels the state agency there as a market force (by terming the invading colonial forces as a "corporation," which coincidentally, is a state construct).
The protagonists in Avatar are anti-technology and anti-war more than they are anti-state. In the end of the film the state research outpost remains on the planet, but the evil industrialists and mercenaries are forced to leave. Presumably this is a victory for both the state and "nature," over the forces of greed; however, it's not assumed that the state won't return at some point to take control over their colony.
Curiously we haven't seen a film so vehemently anti-war during the current administration because more of the leftist movement has gotten behind the imperial war machine while they are in political control. |

So I think it's fair to refer to that as part of the same era of political sentiment in the US. 17 April 1961 was the Bay of Pigs invasion. June 17, 1972 was the night of the break-in that launched watergate.
America in 1961 and America in 1972-74 were 2 completely different countries. There was a completely psychologically devastating war in between those dates utterly changing everything. The Modern Era is considered having started in the 1920's and extended to 1964, the beginning of the Vietnam War. After that, we are considered the PostModern Era.
The vietnam war bridges the gap between those two eras, as does the all-encompassing cold-war. I don't think how you can honestly say the psychology of those eras was dramatically different.
If you want to split hairs over the birth of post-modern relativism, then be my guest, but it doesn't actually critique my observation about popular films spanning the pre and postmodern eras in the US. |

Utterly different. Besides no Vietnam yet during the earlier period, the Civil Rights Act had not even been enacted. Look. I was there. You were not. Stop trying to be 'right'. You have enough errors in your movie 'information', much less history of politics and popular culture. You aren't gaining much respect here, at all. So just stop now before you make one of the fine posters in this thread, as they mostly are, angry.
It seems like you're the only one who is angry here. Over what, I don't know. Rational debates are not something to get upset about.
If you're going to refute my thesis; however, I think you should come up with something more substantial than "I was there," and you probably ought to include something about why you think the political and popular culture were so different. |

My thoughts exactly. Why ruin a good conversion piece you can share with a friend. Worse yet: why send out that wonderful conversation into the ether so that the extended network of acquaintances can dissect it as though it were intended for them? Twitter just takes that one step further. I laugh my ass off every time my company sends out tweets and a client has to be informed of what twitter is and why they have to check it.

Also installing Steam to see how TF2 plays on it, so many dependencies with curl ect...
Wireless drivers are the perennial pain in the ass with most distros, although these days you should be able to locate the drivers somewhere assuming you know what hardware you've got.
As far as Wine, it's very hit or miss so don't get your hopes up. I haven't done anything with steam of late, but heard good things. YMMV

Hollywood is just now realizing how broke the average movie goer is.
Saw Lone Ranger yesterday and it wasn't that bad. Plot was not as hard to follow as advertised by the critics and JD was a pretty good as Tonto. I'd give it 6/10. I would be surprised if they didn't try for a sequel. |

If you're a proficient code-monkey your degree is not all that important. Our IT guys probably have more random science/art degrees than actual CS/IS. Coming from an engineering background myself, I can't see why it would be hard to translate that into a programming specialty if you so desired. |

I know he could over here as the few clips I've seen on Youtube (granted I would have been most likely exposed to the more ridiculous ones like reporters wrestling in the office) suggest they were trying to convict him in the public court. Of course the possible reason would be that they knew this would be close, but because of race it would get attention and prime the public for a verdict of guilty.... and then they have weeks of debate after as people protest, feel cheated, possible follow up in the Supreme Court.
Disappointingly the Guardian appears to have jumped on the bandwagon about a Supreme Court appeal or a civil trial.
I believe his lawyers still have NBC in court over their hack job with the tape, but I don't know what all he's likely to win. My understanding is that it's near impossible to libel a media outlet of that size in the US.
As far as the Guardian goes, I'm sure they get domestic US news from the leftists who are doggedly adhering to their libelous narrative rather than the facts presented in the courtroom.
Fortunately now some of the more sane people (someone at Slate did a rather even-handed factual piece) on the left have begun to call his witch-trial what it is/was, so perhaps the international media will begin to get wind of just how manufactured the outrage was. vOv |

How the abortion debate is going to play out given technology advances constantly to redefine where viable life begins... but that's another story. It's really not that vexing when you consider the state as pair of mafia families, rather than socially beneficial outgrowth of human cooperation, but I leave you to get that cynical and jaded on your own time.
Kirjava wrote: I hope people get behind him to take the media circus to hand, the Guardian has shown it is a good thing for scrutinisation of politics and business as has the Telegraph (the two main papers in the UK, Labour leaning and Tory leaning respectively) but it looks like to me they are positioning themselves as a global Anglosphere news group, Glenn Greenwald for instance is a reported of theirs based out of Brazil. All the power to them, but I'm a spot concerned its turning them into a soapbox for speaking to a global audience instead of being journalists and reporters of objective content.
I hate to speculate about the Guardian, since I'm not as familiar with their history and politics as I am with the domestic rags here, but AFAIK they're suffering from the same handicap that most "center-left," parties around the world are. That is, they are falling in line with the political wing of their states and friendly states. You saw the same shtick with the right when the Bush/Blair coalition was in mid-coitus.

The Telegraph is in favour of business interested and more blunt practicality in many cases (probably says more about my own politics that) which more often than not leads to them looking favourably on the Conservatives (current PM is from this party) but they did have good things to say about pragmatism under Blair and Brown. The Guardian started as the Manchester Guardian before moving to Fleet Street, so has an origin in the old industrial heartland with associated sympathies with the union movement and the Labour party and the Liberal Democrats (other half / quarter of the current Government under the coalition).
Thanks for the background.
Kirjava wrote: Both of them will happily stab any party in the back as generally they agree on civil liberties of the individual being paramount, the argument being on the methodology by which they get to that position. Not saying they are the epitome of trustworthiness by any means, just that they know their readerbase is reading more than one paper and they have to take that into account. Telegraph did the piece on the MP's expenses and the Guardian the NSA.
I may get blasted for going too libertarian on this, but I don't actually buy the critique of individual politicos as being a stand against untrustworthy statesmen (in general) or civil liberty. A long time ago (read as: early 20th century) these papers were classical liberal and they actually did talk about the systemic corruption of some such office. These days it seems more like the "top men," fallacy than anything else. They appear to belabor the myth that if only the right person were in charge of X, that it would work or there would be no (or less) corruption.
One can still hear the intermittent and shrill cries of the media against flagrant violations of civilian rights, but now it's all couched in the current paradigm of CCTV, heavily restricted speech, protests that have to be submitted to the proper authorities, the "war on terror," etc. That probably says as much about the readers as the papers themselves, but it's quite telling that nobody has launched a Greenwald-esq crusade against central banks who are quite-literally pillaging the EU and US economies. |

Here's hoping that D.C isn't far behind them. The feds could use a great deal of restructuring, starting with just about every department in the demonic alphabet.
More apt on the Detroit front: Start-ups here are thriving now that the local government is too weak to impose their nonsense. The Detroit-ruin **** is just a media campaign is nothing more than pro-government propaganda. The people who fled the city are bureaucrats and leeches on the state teat (not to mention a whole lot of the vagrants and criminals who thrived on the scummy public system).
Basically, anyone who has their fingers on the pulse of Detroit knows that this is what we all hoped for. The longer the public sector stays in atrophy here, the more innovative private solutions develop, the better off we will all be. My neighborhood used to be awash in crime. Now we're being covered by private security that is cheap, and FAR more effective than the boys in blue ever were. And before you go accusing them of being blood-thirsty mercenaries: They haven't killed anyone in the 4+ years they have been operating. Detroit PD shot someone on a daily basis. If you need more evidence that the private solution is always better, there are plenty around here and we're coming up with new ones daily.
Of course, you won't hear any success stories on the news, but there are bloggers covering it locally. Not exactly the furtive libertarian paradise of anyone's dreams, there are still state and federal thugs circling the carcass and our wallets, but compared to the majority of metropolitan areas it's heaven on earth. |

Random McNally wrote:Banks are one of the great evils of the world.
Along with Insurance companies and lawyers.
I think your ire is misplaced. Lending my friend some money after contracting a deal where he will pay me back the sum, plus interest, is not evil. What's evil is that banking, through the apparatus of the state -holding a currency monopoly- takes that money and manipulates its value for the gain of the politically affluent. So it's much more accurate to say the present banking system is the greatest evil in the world (and I would agree).
Secondly, insurance companies are effectively non-existent in the modern state. As more and more forms of insurance become mandatory and higher minimum rates of coverage are demanded, the market is no longer allowed to regulate an equitable exchange between the insurer and the insured. State monopolies or oligopolies currently holding the title of "insurance company," are taking in vastly more than they are required to pay out because that relationship has been dictated by the legal system.
I have no argument for lawyers, their job depends on the predations of the state on individuals so unless they are writing private contracts and defending people against injustice, they're doing evil. |
