i play both wow and eve... in the past, hardcore wow... now much more hours eve (but not hardcore any of those)
one thing i really really hate on this forums, is the total hate towards world of warcraft, or the jelousy towards it or the hate to it's players or whatever, i don't really want to know the details about that...
i do believe this "wow-hate" raised like a internet hoax or a urban legend... some1 had a bad experience and started talking crap.
now before i continue, i want to make one thing clear:
I DON'T WANT ANY STUPID WOW VS EVE COMPARATIONS IN THIS POST. you can use one of the other 786345345 posts like that or make a new one.
WHAT I DO WANT IS: i want to convince myself that people is wrong with this hate. that it's all based on THIN AIR. and in order to convince myself i need to know how many of you actually had a real problem with wow, their players, or whatsoever.
SO, TO THE POINT: if you are one of those "wow-haters", please enlighten me: what has been your problem? why such hate? and don't come with the usual stupid nonsense of "hahaha, nub, wow sucks, end of story" because that only gives me more reason to be right. i want your STORY, i want the background of this "wow-hate" and i want to proof myself and maybe proof others, that it's totally unjustified.
and now, i'll start this list with a own story, which is a point against "wow" but doesn't make me hate it:
- we started a small corp and started recruiting people. we wanted dedicated people to do stuff in gang and be a "family". two of those guys where wow players. one left due problems with his parents, his bad scores at school, etc. the other one just got bored with eve. in the end, both players left, we didn't really "lose" anything except a few guys we were trying to forge a friendship over last 2-3 month.
now, my counter argument is that we also recruited some veteran eve player who left after 1 month, to join a corp with more 0.0 action. and we also lost a member that got bored of eve and went to try out other MMOs like lord of the rings. so, what happened to us is not totally "wows fault" and after analyzing the situation, i don't find any reason to hate wow.

Theres an end-game in wow.
Level 70, the best set gear for your class which takes a couple of months :)
The farmer currency is ALOT worse in wow also than it is in eve, you can buy an 'experience breaking' amount of gold relatively cheap, now im not condoning it, im just saying its a problem with the game

My Planetside outfit moved to WoW because we were generally bored of PS and fancied a change of pace.
PS is a game where you can be effective from day one. A good FPS player can be every bit as good as a three year vet inside of a week or two and can certainly kill those players from day one. There is no ingame currency. It's also entirely non-instanced so if you can drop by for an hour or two and find something to do in the context of the permanently ongoing war. Just look at the map and see what needed doing (my outfit were quick reaction so that worked doubly - if in doubt just let the enemy pick something for you to do). Ideal game for "casual" players and people with too much free time to be able to play together.
WoW by contrast you needed to level up at the same rate as everyone else and play at the same times as everyone else - or solo. We had players in three timezones and with vastly differing amounts of free time. Two or three of us made secondary characters to help people level up if they missed the main "push" but eventually that got too much for people.
We also predictably ran into issues with "loots" despite best efforts to run the guild as a communist state. Running the same instance several times trying for a particular item is just painful. Most of them we ran at least twice anyway to allow for people to "catch" up if they couldn't play on instance night which made it extra irritating. People whinging about you having items they want to sell when you can actually use them inspires the urge to strangle.
Those factors and the split between people who liked BGs and hated BGs probably did it for the guild and made them not fun to play with for me.
For me personally I think the real killer was the realisation that I was doing a slightly boring thing to level and afford better gear so I could do different slightly boring things more efficiently. Seemed like a vicious circle. I ended up evaluating the chunk of my free time it was eating up vs how much I was actually enjoying playing and there was quite a deficit.
I think the most fun I had in WoW was probably soloing as a hunter when I was in the TBC beta. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

WoW is completely based around time spent playing. This is an unhealthy concept because the countless hours spent on the game by people who play the end game is time completely wasted. I don't consider normal games to be a waste of time. Everyone needs time to nothing and have fun, thats why we play games in the first place. But when I hear people say, 'I raid 50-60 hours' per week, I often also see a complete lack of social life, and an exercise which has no product in the real world being given job-like hours.
Aside from the fact that I dislike the concept in general, the game is easy. You play huge amounts of time in repetitive situations, for aquisition of advancement/items. It's at the bottom of the food chain in terms of intellectual activity and has never improved anybody. _

jesus christ guys... READ THE OP damnit...
i didn't ask what you think about wow. i don't give a CRAP, specially if u didn't even play it but only relay on 3rd party information.
i didn't ask about why you stopped playing it, or why u keep playing it.
i asked: as eve players, how does world of warcraft affect you in a way that makes you HATE wow or it's community. if you don't have any personal experience that makes you "hate wow" or you are a "wow hater" but don't actually have any argument to back up that hate... don't even post here. everything else can be posted in one of the gazillion of "wow vs eve" posts out there.

Originally by: Neon Genesis WoW is completely based around time spent playing.
all RPGs are dependant on the amount of time spent playing. that's the whole point of roleplaying games - the accumulation of skillpoints. the inexplicable allure of the grind.
you don't have to spend 50 hours a week raiding, that's utter *******s. you can play whenever you want, level as slowly as you want. if you want FULL EPIX LOL you'll have to raid a lot, but that's just the same as wanting FULL OFFICER LOL in eve.
getting up at 4 in the morning to switch a skill is also unhealthy, but very few people actually do that.
it also never ceases to amaze me that people always seem to imply that you can be an efficient killing machine in Eve without any skillpoints at all, that's utter *******s. sure, you might get a point on somebody or something but you simply aren't going to be as capable as a pilot who started their account a year ago.
anyway.
wow is a superb game, and probably done more for Eve Online's popularity than all the Eve fanboys combined will ever manage.
it brought MMOs into the mainstream in an accessible, funky way. it's an incredibly polished product (despite the same nerf/buff cycle all mmos suffer from) and the community has exactly the same percentage of slack-jawed teenage morons as Eve does.
back in the day admitting to liking MMORPGs was like going around telling people you had genital Herpes - they were afraid your consummate sadness might rub off on them or something - but wow changed that, and changed it for the better.
besides i can't even begin to describe how incredibly sad it is to be an MMO fanboy.

to be brutally honest, its the same mentality that sees fans of rival football teams shout abuse at each other.
and yes, i played wow for a long time (i had a 60 warlock and a 60 hunter on Al'Akir EU - i migrated them and flogged the account when i got bored.)

so, let me translate this (this is just an example):
some of the 300K eve players have seen (or heard elsewhere) about the wow forums, where 8.5M players go and whine. (ergo, the whines are much more than in eve)
thus, their conclusion is that wow = bad, and they know this without even spending a couple of month in wow. they know this because "the internetz sais so"... not only they form their opinion based on this, but they also form a HATE against anything related to wow...
and i ask: how stupid is that?
i am yet to see ONE... ONE wow player, saying anything against or about the eve community, the eve forums, or the game itself... but it's the eve players who call them "kids, immature, carebears" and whatelse...

I played the 2 week trial on WoW, I found it relaxing after a day's studying but not the kind of thing I would take seriously. Eve is much, much more brutal and I have a love hate relationship with her, but WoW you didn't lose anything, rich coming from me I suppose, but I like the risk that something can go wrong.
