Quote: Jumpgates are the only viable option, else the game simply turns into a single player game that just happens to be online. Imagine if you had free reign over where you could warp to... how would you ever manage to meet for a battle, swap bookmarks? No, the main element of this game is about the player interaction, whether thats in joint mining, corp wars, trade, industry... The jumpgate system ensures that players come into contact with each other which of course is the whole point of a MMORPG:)
Make the scanner so that you can right-click & warp-to anyone/thing on the scanner. added a greatly increased range setting on the scanner which would return less specific information [ perhaps less accurate ] but at much much more distant ranges.
Then, assuming you could jump systems w/out a gate, make it take a couple minutes for the warp fields to be generated, aligned, etc.
to say there is only one viable option isn't fair. -- Jump Drive Operation / Rank 5 / SP: 1280000 of 1280000

Actually, looking from a pure sci-fi point of view having jump gates is very logical.
The energy to move a ship from 1 star system to the next is huge, to be able to fit such a powercore into a ship the ship would have to be huge.
Such a ship would be very expensive and because of this gates become logical.
By creating some form of stationary gate you can allow smaller ships to move from one system to the next without having to have the jump drive themselves.
The alternative would be to dock all ships with a "mothership" and have it jump to the next system.
Its true that the system to system travel could be solved by another method but having stationary gates opening some form of wormholes is the most plausable at the moment.
The only reason warping works for this method in star trek is because they havent ever realy defined how fast the different warp numbers are. In the original series warp was a logatrithmic scale where warp 10 was infinite speed, they even made an episode or was it a movie about it... naturally they lost all the data they collected :)
In the next generation and the rest warp speed has been redefined but I doubt they have been stupid enough to specify the actual speed as they would open up the possibility someone with a calculator actually sits down and calculates how long it would have to take to get anywhere.
The sci-fi comunity have learned from the early mistakes, dont specify, the enteprice in the original series had less memory than a common mobile phone has today.
In short, gates are as good as any solution and its thanx to B5 and other sci-fi sources a popular solution atm :)

jump drives will solve the gate camping problem if you see a gate camp via the map screen you can just jump past it

Quote: That sure would be pretty if Jump Drives worked like that..
Like your standard jump drive can jump 5 light years. And then it takes 30 minutes to recharge. So you open up the big map. You select an option to highlight the stars within 5 light years. Then BAM! you can jump to one of the stars in range.
Dunno though.
The smallest system in eve is about 15au from point to point.
So 5 id be pretty bad dont you think
