I don't think so.
Most (but not necessarily all) licensed games take great liberties with the source material that alienates the fanbase and makes it flop like a fish out of water. STO will be no different.
Perhaps it could harm the profits of World of WarCraft very slightly for a short time, but that would be the only good side effect.
And get this: STO will let you buy in-game items with real money. What's next? Allowing the injection of in-game money whenever people want it? STO would be an economist's worst nightmare...

1) MMO's from well-known franchises have a poor history. LOTRO and SWG spring to mind. 2) Star Trek games have, almost without exception been *appalling* in the past, with developers relying on the huge popularity of the franchise to sell the games, rather than actually, y'know, making a good game! 3) Er... EVE allows buying in-game items with real money, it's called the GTC for ISK trade. People need to stop fooling themselves that it's anything except RMT really :(
So, I agree with you, I don't think STO will be a major threat to EVE. I'd also imagine that a Star Trek online universe would be pretty "fluffy"... not much room in that genre for non-consensual pvp and piracy wouldn't you say

Originally STO was perhaps a bit of competition with EVE, but now that has been bought by a company that wants to make it a "more casual gaming experience", i doubt it can even pretend to be competition.

I see any new MMORPG as a new chance to find another game I like. So I'm quite happy. The more announcements of upcoming MMORPGs the better. Sadly most of them turn out to be not what I expect from an MMORPG ( either I'm immediately bored or after some days or weeks, maybe months if they are good. ^^)

How can another game be a threat to us? We play this game, we do not own it. It just forces CCP to be better than the competition, aka EVE gets better :) x |

We're technically "buying" money from other players, so no additional money is actually injected into the economy: it was already there. That's what makes EVE unique and balanced.

Star Trek Online was announced about 4 years ago. In that time they have not released a single full fledged screen shot. By that I mean they haven't released a screen shot that shows the game environment and even the start of a GUI. The most I have seen is a couple of models (supposedly made "in game") and some concept art.
Additionally the entire game reeked of over achievement. The original design called for full fledged space combat, on board ship life, away mission combat, and space stations you could walk around in. There has never ever been a game that can properly pull off all those different aspects because quite frankly thats really calling for 3 different games entirely.
And now they have announced the game will be redesigned for a casual player and use real money for items (possibly instead of a monthly fee). I have been following MMOs far too long to not see the writing on the wall on this one. Star Trek Online will be lucky to ever reach a retail environment. And if it does the chances are very good it will be a low quality game that probably just allows for normal ship combat like previous star trek games in a semi persistent environment. I doubt if it would appeal to the same sort of individual that would like EVE.

Bridge commander was great, EVE could learn some lessons from it. Shattered universe on the other hand Legacys not to bad in a shooty pew pew way but it gets old fast.

I doubt it will be much of a threat. After all it's Star Trek so they'll probably have the moral code and preachiness of the TV shows. Meaning no pvp and you probably can't play any of the baddies like the Borg or Cardassians.

I absolutely loved Bridge Commander, it was one of those games that I really didn't want to end.
But let's not forget its father, the old and venerable Starfleet Academy. That was insanely fun and I personally loved the real actors in each between-mission movie. No games do real actors anymore.. it's a pity.. they're also one of the reasons I loved Wing Commander 3, 4, and Prophecy so much. -----

Star Fleet Command 1-3 were pretty damn good, EVE could also benefit from how ship combat is handled there..

There are a lot of Trek fans who would love to pvp in a Klingon ship.

Oh my god you might have to play a different game! What a horrifying thought. Options, choices, these must terrify you.
I am happy whenever any major MMO is released, because each furthers development of the genre. WoW did more for the MMO genre than any single game released, including UO and EQ. Why? Because it broadened the market substantially. Now games like Eve Online and the future Star Trek Online can survive targeting niche markets because the market base is larger.
And, while using a well known licensed material for a game hasn't always done well in the past, there have been some exceptional games as well, though they go mostly ignored because sterotyping usually wins over common sense. |

Well... it wasn't *very* good. It was OK, it had potential. It wasn't very Star Warsy and it had some serious grinding issues (profession grinding to unlock Jedi slot was a terrible game mechanic).
I think the total horror of the NGE makes a lot of people see pre-NGE SWG through rose-tinted spectacles a bit

A friend of mine, the kind that can watch 3 seconds of an TNG episode and tell you every detail of it... ya, has been following this. Last I heard you could play The Federation, Klingons and one other that I dont remember. Also, you speciallised. So ya, who wants to be the Transporter Op? Anyone? Ya, everyone wants to be the captain. After that I stoped following it, cause even if they do make it it will be crap tastic, or under that model all one man shuttle type ships.
Add in what I've read here... ya, disapointed, but not worried. -----------------------------------------------

It will never be eve, i have been reading the dev blog for a while now, and everything i have read turned me off. no 3D flight, constrained to a 2D plane, how lame, no real pvp unless you are in the holodeck. Also adopts the general characteristics of all the other mmo's like having to do repeated away missions to level. come on. and all the away missions are in first person shooter perspective just like UT.
There are some cool ideas regarding starships and there operation. you can be with a gang of players on the same starships with there own unique skills. so one would be the captin at helm responsible for navigation while others are on, weapons/tactical, engineering, and away teams.
dont no, will have to wait. but by them will have ambulation and planetery flight.
