Hello everyone, i just killed a new, and after telling me in local what ******* i am (bla bla bla) he told me he wishes i die soon.
now that doesnt realy frighten me much, but the rate of such wishes is sort of increasing. during the last weeks i had about 8 newbs telling me
a) they wish i will die soon or b) they cursed me to die soon or c) they hope for an accident to me to happen.
while im not realy scared about that to happen im seriously wondering what is happening to this GAME - looks like a lot of the new folks arent realy relaxed about it?

Eve is gaining notoriety and more players are comming from WoW or (insert other MMO)...when they see how harsh and unforgiving EVE can be they get upset. It is certainly not what they expect out of a game when the ones they are used to playing have "pvp regions or servers"

Just tell em that Jovian space is npc space, and that they can enter through a gate in one of the nearby systems. (of course make sure to show em how map works so they go there)

Just petition them, better do it while they are noobs then later when they got a 20+ mil sp account banned due to rl threats against another player.
The last guy who called me some rather nasty five and four letter words ended up being the subject of my brand new petition. Within about ten minutes he cut his conversation short and went offline and didn't come back the entire evening. I'm sure he used his time away from EVE wisely to cool off and remember that it is just a game and a teen rated one at that, and no matter how much alcohol you drink it doesn't serve you as a permit to start verbally abusing other players. I got no problem with people feeling upset/angry over losing a game but jeez being totally irate, typing all kinds of obscenities practically foaming at the mouth, some of these guys really do need a break from EVE.

As was previously stated, EVE is seeing an influx of new players who have become bored with the repetitive PvP that WoW (and other MMO's) offer.
After all, alot of players felt totally shafted when WoW's new expansion meant they could upgrade gear they spent weeks raiding to get, by simply killing a solo NPC and loot a common type item with better stats.
The main reason why they are comming to EVE should be obvious...
CCP is advertising around various gaming sites now that Trinity is only days from being launched. I've seen many new players who came to EVE in the rookie corps where I still have some of my alts.
The problem for alot of those people, when it comes to the PvP and ganking, is that they are not used to losing items and such in the PvP MMO's they used to play.
Dying in WoW, to use the obvious example, meant nothing other than losing a bit of ranking or points on the PvP rank/charts.
Dying in EVE can mean hours, days, sometimes even weeks of work going ka-blam. And for someone who aren't aware of those consequences... well... of course they'll be mad.
And when they have no capabilities to strike back, they resort to "barrens chat", aka smack-talking.
The more new players we get into EVE who aren't aware of the consequences to PvP and can't fight back, the more smack talk you'll get.
I wouldn't be too worried though. They'll either learn that EVE is a harsh universe where you need to be on your toes, or they will simple end up leaving the game, which is fine too.
CCP do say in their advertisements that EVE offers the most hardcore PvP (PvP loss anyways) of any MMO on the market.
In any regards, I've been called a griefer, that they hope I die, that I must have been beat up or abused as a child and what more colorful variants of insults you can think of, when I've popped someone's ship.
My way of thinking is, the day I start taking insults from totally random and unknown people, over the internet, seriously, is the day when I need to sell my computer.
Am I jaded, cynical and got beat up as a child? Again, I don't care what you might think

maybe they think it is part of the "game play" a ploy to make lowsec seem more dangerous.
I honestly think the reason is because no other game makes you work for what you have and doesn't give it back when your killed. game over...no revive, no spell of life, no..whatever else they use..back to square one
that is also what makes eve great...the loss is real, and some people just can't handle that. We live in a world today that has saves, extra lives, difficulty levels, etc..etc. Eve is definatley outside the box as far as that goes.

Same here. Got a 2 day old in a Caracal asking for pewpew. When he popped in about 30 seconds to my vexor (only used my light blasters due to his age) and realized he had only HMLs fitted, no other modules at all . Gave him a few tips and a bit of knowledge in addition to a couple of mils to get a new ship with proper fittings just because he was such a good sport.

its kinda funny, for the longest time i was getting responses like the ones you got, but the last few noobs i killed were really chill guys who stuck around in local and talked for a bit, and i ended up sending them a mill or two and giving them some advice to help them out.
If someone has 6+ mill SP they should know better than to come to lowsec if they're not willing to lose their ship, but some of these noobs just don't realise the risk of lowsec. its not some high level zone where you go once you've leveled up enough to kill the big bad npc monsters like someone coming from wow expects of a "danger! now entering low sec!" warning. They've been at it for two straight months, upgraded their ship 3 or 4 times, theyre ready by now right?

As Arekhon said, a lot of players seem to be coming over from WOW where if you do PVP and loose, there isn't any penalties, whereas in EVE, if someone shoots down your mining ship and it's all you have, EVE doesn't care and your set back a long way.
I was ransommed in 0.4 space the other day and after I had paid, I discovered my warp drive was working again and was soon back in 0.5. The guy had said sorry things were a bit hectic and if they had had more time, they would have made more of an effort to ensure me they honoured ransoms. The thing that makes me want to keep subscribing to EVE is that you can sometimes have a nice chat with your ransomers who will sometimes suggest ways in which you can improve on your tactics.

I don't think you can blame this on wow. Ive never experienced something like that in wow not even when ppl at the highest lv visit starting areas and kill everyone over and over and over.
Ive had ppl wish my whole family would get raped and murdered in eve, never was even close to that in wow. I might have been called idiot, ****head or smth in wow but thats all.

You need to look at a more complex system than just
"Its a game"
because that is in fact not true. Not everything that happens to you in this game will stay in the game.
For example, you need to invest real-life time to gather items/whatever. And now some "ebil piwate" comes and destroys these items and probably enjoys doing so. That situation initiates very much anger in certain people. I personally consider those people "carebears". Its hard to lose real-life time in form of ingame items, sure, but always remember that you don't want to end up as a carebear crying for its mommy. Take your losses like a man, get a new ship, kick ass again.

You lose real-life time whether you lose your stuff in eve or not.
You are trading the option of going outside for collecting f'ing pixels. If losing pixels bothers you so much you should collect something that isn't so transient.

as i said im not scared by it, im just suprised about how much of that attitude im experiencing in the last time..
however i think that wow explanation might be a good reason - but for my part i can say i switched from wow to eve-o about one and a half year ago - mainly cause i wanted the more intense gameplay that you get when you actually experience losses instead of wows mikey mouse pvp.
when i got killed the first time i convoed the pirate who did it (and whom i consider a friend today) and asked him why i didnt get killrights on him and what i could have done better..

my advice to noobs is this: spend at least a year skilling up and then think about exploring lo sec.
my character is a trader so after a year of doing what i do best i can now afford to loose the odd ship or two whilest exploring the dangerous areas.
taking a reaper into lo sec and attempting to take on a BS get s ten out of ten for bravery but minus several million for good thinking.

It's all about your attitude when you are killing him and even your tactics. If you consistently get people cursing you and wishing for your death, maybe, just maybe, you're kind of a jerk when you hunt?
It also has to do with the mindset of the victim. I've been ganked plenty of times during my time here in Eve, but I've never lost my cool over it. I usually end up having a conversation with my gankers

Mostly, it is because the new crop of new folks seem to stuff of much more value when they wander into my little pocket of space. Best named lasers on a catalyst, named shield boosters on a hyperion.
Its expensive to buy and lose those mods.
Way back when, I lost plenty of ships, and they were fitted with cheap T1 mods because it was all I could afford at the time. It bankrupted me on occasion, but it wasn't such a steep loss. Now a days, the mods that are getting dropped and destroyed outstrip the cost of the hull they have them badly fitted to. So understandably they are screaming.
Mind you, the tears make excellent diamond chips when they freeze onto the corpses faces when you blow them out of their pod into space. And the screams are an excellent soundtrack as I touch myself in the soft glow of an exploding ship. But those are just the bonus perks to my job as the killer of people others don't want to waste their time killing.

The only other game I know of with a penalty for dying was Diablo 2 when you played on hardcore mode. There death was permanent for your character. Maybe some of our newer players should spend a bit of time giving that game a try to get used to losses. Something you'll suffer a lot of in eve.
Honestly MMO's these days really do encourage mindless pvp. If you can't suffer losses then you don't develop your skill at pvp and learning to estimate your enemies. It's something I truly love about eve. Sadly... not everyone agrees with me hence why carebears and ebil smack ensue =( <----------------------------------> Carebears aren't people, they're giant flying piniatas.

My Advice to noobs is: Don't listen to this guy. Get a frigate and some tackle go to low sec. Find a low sec corp that pew pews in your area and see if you can tag along when they go looking for stuff to explode. You might lose your ship, or you might get some kills. Either way you'll probably have more fun than cowering in empire and you'll probably learn some stuff too. -

The harsh pvp in EvE actually reminds me of the old runescape from like 10 years ago. (yeah used to play that at some point ) Anyway, back in the day, when you made a character there, you had to choose between pk and non-pk mode and could change that status only twice per character. So if you for example started in pvp mode, you could go carebear mode once and then back to pvp mode, and would be locked to pvp mode with that char for the rest of the game.
While you were in pvp mode, any1 could attack you (there was some level restrictions though I think, like only ppl 10 or less levels higher than you could attack you). If you were killed you lost all but your 3 most valuable items. Eventually though that lead to ppl walking around in 3 expensive items and rest of the gear being throwaway stuff. But if you had attacked another player withint 10-15 mins, you'd lose all of your stuff if you were killed.
But then that system was removed, and pvp was only allowed in certain pvp area. I sure hope eve's pvp won't get restricted to some pvp arena due to all the crying.

I played WoW for over two years and I expect even the the self declared hardcore PvP'ers would flip out every time they got killed.

Originally by: PhantomMajor my advice to noobs is this: spend at least a year skilling up and then think about exploring lo sec.
my character is a trader so after a year of doing what i do best i can now afford to loose the odd ship or two whilest exploring the dangerous areas.
taking a reaper into lo sec and attempting to take on a BS get s ten out of ten for bravery but minus several million for good thinking.
You can be sure that this guy's idea of a pvp ship doesn't go below tier 1 battleships and he shrugs it off as a unavoidable loss when he gets popped at every gatecamp flying around solo in low sec. Don't listen to this, grab yourself a frigate and go mess something up. (If you get caught in a low sec gatecamp in a frig you are unlucky or you tried to warp to something directly behind you.)

A few weeks ago i killed a guy npcing in a scorp in low sec. I wasi n deimos. He then later convo and smacked the hell out of me swearing cussing ect but no threats. Never had anyone do that to me before so agressively before was a little shocking actually. Normally i look for noobs kill and pod them then send double the isk they lsot for the ship and give them advice. Teaches lesson and helps em ^^ [/url] |

you know, so many pirates in this thread say that after they kill a noob they give the noob isk and advice.
i realize that i too have done this on a couple occasions.
maybe i will just make an alt every other week and fly around lowsec doing stupid things to see if i can get a pirate to give me isk.
would that be pirate griefing? or pirate isk farming? either way sounds like fun.

When you blow them up and steal their cargo, that makes you a thief.
In some areas of EVE, like High sec space, it's not a lot different than someone attacking you on a sidewalk and stealing $20 out of your wallet...
Sometimes it's hard to remember this is all just a game.

Nope, they hate thieves actually. I was scouting with my alt and jumped into a lowsec system at the same time as a hauler. I switched over to my main and left my alt cloaked on the gate for a good 15 minutes before I looked over again and lo and a behold... a hauler. The same hauler (I'm thinking bait as 4 carriers had just recently cyno'ed in) But I tell my corp mate and he goes and pops the hauler anyways leaving the pod alone. I decloak my alt fly over to the wreck and snag what loot I can before going back to station... and wouldn't you know, the hauler pilot convos me! Then he proceeds to tell me i'm a ****** **** and how he's going to quit this ridiculous game, without even realizing that a rifter could not kill a hauler on a gate in Lowsec.
I could understand maybe if my alt was part of the same corp as my main, but I've been keeping my alt out of it. Other then the occasional wreck snatching ____________________ Hi. I'm not an alt :) |

Edited by: Tirabi on 06/12/2007 20:58:54 I am embarrassed to admit I flew off the handle the first time I was killed. BUT, it wasn't because I was killed. I knew before I downloaded the game I would die over and over. I was mad because I was killed by 10 people at once camping a gate and then pod killed. I was just amazed at how anyone could think 10 people killing a 3 week old player was the least bit fun; fun that lasted an entire 2 seconds. It's meaningless and pointless. Yes, I know the pirate rule, "If it's not green, shoot it."
Really, if you get your thrills doing that you are no better than the person who wishes you dead. Hey, maybe they were just role-playing and meant in game. LOL And there was no convo after the kill until I messaged the first guy in my kill rights list. He didn't even know who I was or what he'd done. Idiot.
If it helps boost your low self-esteem, then by all means have fun killing care bears.

What's happening? How hard is that to understand?
EVE is not a game for everyone. That's the full and whole reason for noobkillers and griefers getting cursed at.
I'm just starting out with a trial account these days, to see if this game could be something for me to spend time on. And today I lost my first ship. Thankfully, it was something as trivial as a Bantam. But it still annoyed me. I was in 0.8 space, but had looted an abandoned pirate wreck, shot down by a corporation. Five minutes later, I'm mining in the same system, and some guy shows up and guns me down. I call him a jerk. He calls me a thief. I call that a ****ty reason (Looted an abandoned wreck for 100 S Antimatter Charges). He calls me a whiner. Life goes on.
But isn't it obvious that this is going to **** people off? I would characterize most EVE players as pretty "hardcore" gamers, for whom the open PvP and time investment required is perhaps the best part. Most people don't want that though. They want to spend a few hours a day gaming, relaxing. Not protecting their hard earned items and cash from rampaging hordes of bloodthirsty darwinists...
I'm sure there are casual EVE-players out there. But you have to accept that there is a reason WoW has much more mass appeal than EVE. And some of the most important reasons are exactly why people will run their mouth at you for hampering/wrecking their game experience.
Still haven't decided if it's something for me, though I'm afraid I am just that little bit more of a casual gamer than a "hardcore" one. Oh well, extended my account to a full one nonetheless. Gives me a month extra to decide.

Heh i remember my first week of eve. i rushed for a cruiser and clueless about what iwas doing i was just flying around and jumped into lowsec..
after lloking around a bit, i was sorta wondering what all those red flashy things in my overview were. when i looked back at my ship, it was in ruins next to my pod :p
i had spend every penny on that ship so i couldnt pay up the 15 mill for my week old pod (had a clone, and no implants so whatever :P) i just tried to stall them while drifting to the gate :p i got so close to..
After putting up my sad face, but keeping my mouth shut, one of the guys messeged me and explained a thing or 2 aswell. he got me money for a frigate, and told me to GTFO of lowsec for the time being :p
Nowadays i dont go there either.. im still poor.. i got a pure miner and a mission runner, and sadly my fighters skills havent had the time to really focus on pvp (i like rushing for stuff i shouldnt)
In the end it was my own fault for losing my ship offcourse. for some reason i didnt have the popup when i jumped to low sec. If people get so mad they need to resort to sad words, they are just mad at themselves but to stupid to realise it. I like how cruel eve can be, it makes it all the more fun
Ps yes i only played diablo 2 on hardcore :P only cried a little when i lost me lvl 98 sorcs :p

It always hurts to loose your stuff when you least expect it. However, this is Eve and that happens all the time. In the past I have found ways to accept the inevitable and plan for it. For example: In my earlier days of playing Eve I was running courier missions out of Actee (just to get a hang of some of the game elements), my lvl 1 Agent sent me on a mision into 0.0 (yes it's true, 6 jumps into 0.0 I had to go to deliver some documents) so I thought how to guard against huge losses with my 3 wek old character (0.0 = insta death to me at the time). So my plan was to buy a shuttle, insure Shuttle, load docs into hold, check clone was up to date, and set off on my mission). I made it to the delivery point, delivered to docs and set off.... on exit I thought I'd take the scenic route home, 15 Jumps through 0.0 back to Actee, rather than the route I came (seemed a good idea to explore a bit since I was in there, also I admit I thought "Who would waste ammo on a shuttle that had nothing in it" (days before salvage). I set off and after 3 jumps was attacked by a BS, ransomed, I refused to pay, popped, ransomed again..... I woke up home in Actee. So I convo'd the guy, asked him if the experience was worth the cost in ammo, and promptly thanked him for sending me home. The insurance more than covered the shuttle, I got my reward and a new clone was minimal isk back then... My attacker was no best pleased to learn of this.
My meannig is this: we all get humped from time to time, what the new peeps need to learn is how to plan in advance and mitigate the losses if possible, but when you loose move on and learn from it cause one day you will not loose. Agressive/vulgar smack prooves that you not only loose in game but you just lost in RL too.
I agree with some of the other posters here, there are a lot new peeps that clearly do not understand the meaning of loss and that this is just a game. Like life don;t rush into things, take your time and be clever with what you do.

Edited by: Ukkonen Stadista on 07/12/2007 18:00:38 OK, so my character is two weeks old and about a day ago I bought a Hoarder and started doing some trading. Not long and I was flying in 0.3 and 0.4 with a cargo full of smokes and other garbage. And with all my ISK tied to the cargo as well of course.
I doubled my few million ISKŠs quite fast. And then exiting a station in 0.4 I noticed some red skulls in my overview. My fingers were quicker than light as I clicked to warp somewhere. DidnŠt do all that much. My warp was jammed and in a second or two everything went red. I overcame the shock and soon managed to dock my lonely little pod with half of the armor left.
Luckily I had just dropped my cargo and didnŠt find anything useful to buy, so I was flying with nothing on. What a lifesaver (so to say)!
I managed to escape the station about fifteen minutes later with my new Reaper (the pirates were still having their fun), and headed to a safer system.
But what a lesson learned. Not a good idea to fly low security systems with all your posessions and with just a small autocannon.

i've recently come to Eve...
not necessarily from WoW...but i did play that game.
can say... i've yet to be ganked or killed in PvP. but i'm also playing very cautiously. nearly 2 mil SP and i'm just now putting my toes in 0.5 ish space... own a cruiser, and enough ISK to replace it... have skills for BC and working towards BS but just taking it slow.
i seriously doubt i'd go into a cursing fit if someone killed me. i'd be upset. especially if it was a no contest gank. but... i understand what's at stake in this game.
...anywhere, at anytime, anyone can attack and kill you.
if you're patient enough, money is easy to come by. i worry about SP loss due to being pod-killed. but i guess i'll cross that bridge when i have to.
in a certain morbid way...i actually look forward to the day when i head out into 0.0 for the first time...in any game. i'm scared of what's out there.

When I first started playing eve (long freaking time ago) I mined non-stop for a dommy, which at the time I think it was the 3rd best mining ship in the game. (apoc then mega). When my corp was war decced I decided to go out and wtfpwn this stupid frig which was camping the staition I was in.
Needless to say when I undocked tried to kill him and had 5 more BS's drop on my face, I lost my (so called tanked) dommy in about 5 seconds (didn't know about armor resistance ) I was pretty p***ed, after some thought, and time to cool off, I jumped on my alt and actually conned some isk out of them and got to join in on their camp . First time out in low sec (0.0 was closest) I jumped in on an massive gate camp which wtfpwnd me in seconds.
Lossing stuff is how you learn and get better. Just hope you didn't do something like me and lose a BS through sheer stupidity, and have to go back to mining in a frig . Smack talk is all fine and good and can sometimes be really amusing , just n00bs who don't realise they lost everything because their stupid take it to far, low sec warnings and cans outside gates are there for a reason, if you ignore them accept the consicences of being popped

As a new player I just find a lot of stuff common sense. You should always fully insure ships and update your clones, that way when you get podkilled you at least won't suffer the biggest losses. Only been playing a week, but certainly learned not to stray outside 0.8 space, did that once and never did it again. Some guy held me ransom for about 5mill, had about 200,00ISK so couldn't pay, ended up releasing me. As a new player you just need to understand that this isn't an easy game.

Not stray outside 0.8 space?
In my first week of playing i lost a trasher, because i was mining kernite in an 0.3 system. What did i learn from it? Right: you can be in 0.3, but you have to be CAREFULL (and watch local). If you do that, you'll be fine.....most of the time. :D ___________________________________

I'm a fairly new player still, but I very much enjoy the harsh PvP environment of EVE. When I first started, I did so with a couple of guildies from WoW, and one of them was a veteran EVE player who helped teach me the ropes. One of the first things he taught me was, essentially, suspect everyone. It's a whole different experience being in a game where death comes with a (big) price and where you're at risk of being attacked/suicide-ganked anywhere...I find it a lot of fun. It adds so much to the game!
I am pretty much a huge carebear miner because at this point I don't feel skilled enough to try and PvP -- I don't know enough about gun fittings or ships and I tend to panic in combat situations. In other words, I suck :D
With that friend helping me, I was in low-sec space (.4 - .2) on my second day in EVE, in a crappy little frigate mining things with my horrible miner 1. Sure, I got podded, because I forgot rule #1 and didn't think that other frigate that warped in twice was any cause for concern. Live and learn, move on, get another ship and get back at it. I think it's better to learn the hard way when you're in a cheap frig with civilian lasers than it would be way later on. I have a metric ton of fun ninja mining in low sec, even as a relative noob
I try to remember the game aspect of EVE -- people play games differently, especially in a free environment like EVE. Some like pratting, some like theft, some like PvE missions and mining. It's all good :D

I'm a newb, and to be honest, I offer congratulations to the two pirates that podded me. Granted, I had an empty hull and no implants at the time. If there were no pirates, there would be considerably less adrenaline and profit in lowsec. |
