This is a notification to all memebrs of the EVE Online community that, due to the owner of the network returning from years of absence to perform his best impression of David Brent, the channel has now moved to the Griefplay Network (irc.griefplay.net). For the few of you who remember the channel, and for the 5 of you who still recommend it ingame or via these forums to new players, please adjust that information accordingly. Additionally, a number of related and distantly related EVE communities have also moved, including Failheapchallenge.
For those not familiar with #eve-online, colloquially referred to as 'The Empire of Grief' or just 'The Empire', here is a primer:
This channel is the continuation of what was, for all of alpha, all of beta, and a brief period of live, the official IRC channel for EVE Online, as run by CCP on the Stratics network. This was the before time, when the channel was stalked by the likes of Kwai, Cairnz, Yakzan and RAL, names more ancient than even my own. At some point in time, for reasons lost, CCP withdrew their support of the channel, and handed ownership over to members of the community. After a succession of owners, there came a time when the channel was jointly owned by Molle and RinnyWee, and it was about this time that it entered its first migration, moving to Coldfront along with the official channels used for the test server and by ISD. Shortly after this, the channel was handed over to a new owner, who remains to this day - the Emperor of Amarr himself, Stavros. Leader of The Empire.
This channel has been home to many members of the community aside from the aforementioned, old timers like KnightDelta, Tansien, and Lacrimae, Viceroy the Great Space Lawyer, the mighty and terrifying DigitalCommunist, Levin Cavil the Deceiver, the finest middleman in the galaxy Chribba, Tyrrax Thorrk and Istvaan Shogatsu, Ifni and jamesw, Sutty and bUbBlEs, Frools and Deepflame, GeromeDoutrande, SpiralJunkie... to name just a few. It has also been a stomping ground of CCP devs past and present, before and after, such as Wrangler when he was just a baby volunteer, Pann the CM, and was for the longest time the only place to find Oveur the Technoviking, right up until the day that CCP internal policy shifted from "interacting with the players is ok" to "never speak to or interact with players outside of devblogs ever" courtesy of that incident involving that dev and that corporation. Since then, occasional visits from the friendliest players-turned-dev have been interspersed around the watchful presence of Inquisitor-Cardinal Morpheus. the right hand to Inquisitor-Pope Arkanus I of the CCP Holy Inquisition.
A place with much history, to be sure, but the times move on, and so do we. Our community is old, and yet ever changing, as people come and go. We have moved to ensure that our community lives on; but for that to happen, we also need people to continue contributing to that change. All are welcome to join us.
