Am I the only one wondering how much cache is extreme actually using? Then again we live in the age of terabyte drives so what could extreme mean? 100 megs of cache? If so most of us can run with that on extreme eh?

I'm guessing a gig if you have it, I've got 2.5 gigs of memory in my system and I'm more than happy to give eve 1 gig of that while I'm playing.

I thought cache, was meant as in the cache folder in ur EVE folder which caches your previously access character portraits, etc

Yes that is cache. But the box where you can set it is refering to RAM usage.

And yes higher cache = higher performance, especially if we're talking RAM, since it'll speed up any data requests EVE makes, loading etc is especially faster.
But that's only if you have enough RAM to spare though, giving EVE too much RAM would limit the amount available to other programs if you run like 10 at a time at me.
So now I need to consider lowering that to run 2 clients etc...

Well some of us do know the ins and outs of a computer, so like I said clarification would be nice! And an actual megabyte value/"range" assigned to what Extreme is etc would be nice too...

You obviously dont if you could not figure out what they meant by resource caching, they even describe it if you hover your cursor over it lol

Oh, there's a hover function... so is that intuitive? :P
Though I guess you should be able to put two and two together since it's under the graphics tab, but I'm cramming for my Computer Science 313 course right now and the word cache well, means a lot of things.
And though RAM and your cache are both in the memory hierarchy, to me cache = SRAM and RAM = DRAM, and well I'll shut up now because I'm supposed to accidentally hover my cursor over the title "knowing" a detail tip will pop-up.
But still that leaves the question, how much RAM does Extreme take? I'm at 488 megs now, so what will that max out at? That isn't anywhere...

Some clarification of the numbers for the different setting's would be nice, mines set at high at the minute and is using 800mb of memory.

Though resource cache, someone in corp chat was saying it's memory usage on a video card? As I understand it, a video card caches frequently referenced textures etc on its onboard memory where possible, so I don't know why CCP would need to go fiddling with that, unless EVE wants to know how much ram your video card has, it should be able to figure that out itself.
Perhaps it's total memory to set aside for graphics caching, on vid card and RAM?

The pop-up descriptions are vague too:
Shadow quality: The premium version has the option of showing objects that cast a shadow onto themselves. This adds a layer of realism but does so at the cost of performance on less powerful platforms. Only user the larger buffer sizes on high-end equipment.
Cache size: This controls how much memory to use for resource caching. The higher this setting the more memory the client will use, but loading scenes will be considerably faster for models that have been loaded before.
Buffer what buffer? What components act as bottleneck on the shadow quality settings? Define "high-end equipment" with regards to the shadow quality settings please.
So I have cache size on Extreme, but the client's using 634mb of ram? I assume this will creep up over time as the cache builds. Sounds like putting it on the lowest setting would be the equivalent of the Trinity client behavior?
Anyone know how to see how much of your video ram is being tied up, on the fly? (presumably with an out-of-game tool)

Well there are two types of RAM, on motherboard RAM, ur main RAM you think about, usually 1-4 gigs (though 32-bit CPUs can't see over 3 something) and the video card RAM.
Shadows on extreme uses up to "64mb per shadow map per object e.g. ship" and this is on the video card, which is brutal for any video card on the market (Highest I've seen are 660mb), hence usual sharp fps drops.
Normal = 4 mb per map High = 16 mb Extreme = 64 mb

As for resource caching I'm still a bit unclear, that's definitely 512 mb on extreme, memory that's set aside for textures/object models. The question is where? Distributed between vid card memory and RAM?
I'm not sure but maybe a video card uses its memory more like a cache to duplicate data in RAM, caching frequently referenced data, so you're setting your max RAM usage, and your video card just handles itself.
Also EVE should be able to get the video card's total memory itself, someone told me that the resource cache setting is strictly on video card and defines how much space to allocate to textures, leaving the rest for rendering/shadows/AA etc... Which means setting it to Extreme (512) even on a 660 mb vid card could potentially leave you with little over a 100mb to use for rendering etc, whoever is a tech whiz reply please.
Then it'd follow that if you're relatively static, you'd want a smaller cache to leave more vid card memory for rendering/shadows since you don't need to cache that many ships objects/textures anyways. But if you're in a fleet battle or moving around a lot and expect to load a lot of stuff frequently you'll want more cache so previously loaded objects can be quickly reloaded. (Credit HMS)

The cache is system Ram as its listed in the Task manager, Ive had the client running for 2-3 hours and the EVE exe is now using 1.2gb of system RAM with "extreme caching" and "normal" shadows. I have no clue how to check exactly what the graphics RAM usage is.

I would of your able to adjust and tweak those settings, would it further improve fps, as I know I could give more the 512 to Extreme settings..

In case someone trolls here with a graphics background, another question that sprung up is, what exactly is the difference between no bloom, low and high bloom, since I was told HDR = bloom... so it's either on or off.
From what I was able to research, HDR is the range of lightings possible perhaps HDR in EVE's sense is just a full-screen lighting improvement, detailing bright/darker areas better. Adding bloom on top of this produces the "airy-disc" effect making focused objects brighter, by basically changing it from a full-screen lighting effect to an iris type effect?
