Yeah that's putting way too much faith in CCP. This is real, it's going to affect a ton of people tomorrow, and it is absolutely unacceptable. How was this possibly allowed to go live?

Jesus Christ did you guys actually not test the patch on a clean install and run through the basic checklist of "let's see if this actually works?" i.e. rebooting the computer. I expected issues on the patch but nuking someone's computer is just bad form.

Mine is fine... might have something to do with me installing onto my E:\ drive instead of my C:\ drive maybe?

Maybe the issue lies with the "Delete File: boot.ini" part. Just a suggestion.
Make a backup before your run the installer. If you find you can't find boot.ini after installing, rename the backup to boot.ini and everything should be hunky-dory.
Kudos to CCP for their thorough testing.

Welp. It deleted the one on my work computer and I caught this thread before I shut down for the night. I made a new one and edited it the best I could, but it failed and now I get a "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <windows root>\system32\hal.dll"
I don't have my XP cd anymore or if I do its buried to hell in my basement. If I have to go buy a new one cause of this I'm going to be more than a little ****ed.

this is some bs, if i had rebooted right now and didnt know i would have been SERIOUSLY screwed. I am working a school project and if I had not been able to boot into windows there would have been some yelling...

to the people who don't have XP cd's anymore, you might want to try making a Bart PE disk (google it) or try a linux live cd that can edit ntfs partitions (kinda risky).

Yea, took mine too. How long were CCP working on this update? They can't even get their updater to remove the right file  I hope the devs have vaseiline for the petitions tomorrow  , lol if anyone can get their PC to switch on

I made a small bat to generate a boot.ini for those who had it deleted.
Warning this is only for windows XP.
You can find the boot maker here.

Well, I just installed the patch, and my boot-ini didn't get removed.
Installled the patch on one of my laptops, and same thing there. My boot.ini was left intact.
I'm running XP.

The boot.ini file was deleted aswell. Luckily when I had to reboot for reasons other than EVE, I noticed the BIOS said something real quick...didn't have time to read it (I know for a fact now that it was telling me it was choosing the boot.ini.backup file in the "System\pss" folder.) It could work for some of you, but it might imply having a new PC. |

CCP KILLED MY LAPTOP, im getting the same error. No boot disk or windows xp disk. hmmm. Hey mods who do i send the bill to fix the computer too.

My operating system (XP) is installed in the default location on my laptop. I upgraded from classic to premium, and after admiring the shiny new graphics, I decided to reboot. Got the same error as all of you. 2 hours of research later (luckily my PC is Vista) I got my laptop up and running again.
Also, this did not occur on the test server for me, and I haven't read any reports of such from any other players. Perhaps CCP could have used the extra 4 hours to test various types of installs (clean vs. upgrades, etc) instead of going live early? I appreciate the effort and commend the new graphics, but FFS...

Question, did you all use the upgrade, or did you use the full new premium client? The reason I ask, is because I had no such errors when using the full install (1.1 gig one vs the 580 meg). I also noticed when you try to download the upgrade, it is no longer available, were as you can still access the other two clients.
