It is most definitely deleting C:\boot.ini
The command the installer sent was delete \boot.ini, which deletes C:\boot.ini, if it was delete .\boot.ini or delete boot.ini it would've worked. But it wasn't. And now its just damn hilarious:)
It won't break vista, but it will most definitely break any XP system. If God had wanted you to live, She wouldn't've created me. |

Confirmed mine is in fact gone, with a pretty custom setup, Im pretty PO'd. (but all good IT professionals keep backups of critical files right? *coff coff*)
For those of you who run 2003 server on a gaming rig like me, heres the accompanying boot.ini (allthough if you are running 2003 server as a gaming OS you should allready know this by heart)
Oh, and the XP boot ini would work just fine for a stock 03 server install, names dont mean squat inside teh quotes.

The deleting of the ini file should never of happen with an update.
This is so freaking sad... ----------

I am SO glad there was a discussion on this and a link to this thread in the corp chat before I shut down, since mine was also deleted.
I would have been seriously ****ed, I've had enough computer problems in the past few months, with windows getting corrupted forcing a format/reinstall, then my hard drive failing and needing to buy a new one and reinstall. This would have been the icing on the cake. |

Top Notch, CCP....
I know several people who have logged off before this FUBAR was discovered, what's going to happen to them, how will you notify them?

soooo I dont know much about computers when it comes to stuff like this... but I restarted my computer cause it froze, go to turn it back on and bam.. Im missing some file or its corrupt. so I start wondering what I can do now and like I said I dont know much about this stuff so the only thing I could think of was to use my restoration CD.. finally get the computer on, and of course everything is gone. I didnt download the new graphics cause I thought that was the problem, just the classic version. do I have to do anything to make sure this doesnt happen again? kinda ****ed I lost all my stuff

CCP really needs to get their act together. Deleting system files, major overview bugs, many graphics errors, and the popup they put on when you log on telling you where to go is giving a bad address. W T F!!!!!

Kai, I know how ya feel, I had to do it
but while looking around I found that you might be able to take the hard drive out and put it in another computer if you have to get the files out of it, and use it as a slave or something? I dont know but you can do a google search. I had no choice, it was my laptop.

If you don't have your original windows CD, my advice is to try this...
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
or if you can, use another computer to make a boot CD
or I know Norton's CD may be used as a boot CD, at least it did 2 years ago, but I don't use Norton anymore.

For anyone with a multiple boot machine that Windows isn't on the first partition, the easiest way to repair this is to use the windows recovery console and use the command bootcfg at the command prompt.
If you do have a similar setup, using the default boot.ini some have posted for cut and paste will not work. The recovery console method should also work for people that have their OS on a drive other than "C:"

Wow, what a mess. Good job, CCP.
Stop ******* around and start taking your jobs seriously. And while I'm here (which isn't often), make a working in-game browser for crying out loud. How hard is it to compile tables? The technology has been around for almost 20 years!

The full 1G install of the premium content doesn't have a virus for an installer.

Edited by: Azeria L''Mante on 06/12/2007 07:15:44 My understanding is only people who have downloaded the premium through the client via the update. Those who did a fresh install (read uninstalled EVE and dl'd the full installation) seem to not have a problem and those who have installed windows or the game on a different partition should be unaffected. Additionally those who have xp64 seem to also not be affected, but still everyone should check the msconfig and their root drive to see if the boot.ini is there.

No, n00b, you need to be in windows to do that. Find your recovery CD and GL.

Now that I think about it, a situation like this has happened before; I can't remember the exact game, but the installer had a bug in it, that caused it to format your harddrive when it finished installing. This was quite a few years ago, in the 90's; I have a gaming magazine somewhere with the article in it. Wish I could remember the name of the game.

I am creating a new boot.ini file from scratch since I don't have an XP Professional CD around.
I have kind of a nonstandard setup on this machine, first partition on the drive is a Linux partition and the second is the winders partition.
I have changed the following two lines that I obtained from a previous post, to reflect partition 2.
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
My question is does anyone around have a dual core machine, that can tell me if there is something special in the boot.ini that needs to be added for winders to see the processor correctly?
And yes, programs not included with the OS should not use filenames similar to OS system files. The same holds true with writing software, don't use names that match the OS's API.
sigh* |
