Cool, new ship graphics! I'm noticing a lot of ships have highlighted areas, for this thread I'll refer to the Megathron, as its blue sections are prominent. I was wondering if it would be possible to make those parts stylised. Since its not altering the ship so much that opposing pilots would mistake them for the Kronos or Vindicator. Or why not completely customisable, base paint too. Many ships have only one or two tones/colours and for ship identification you just turn on the column, the only time it will be important is in pvp battles.
Right now my Megathron looks too much like a Fischer Price toy, and the gawdy Amarr ships are just too sensible looking as well.
Two tonal colour choices and a simple "Shiny!" check box, as well as the Alliance/Corp logo on a designated spot (if desired), then you have yourself the pink fleet of carebears with hearts!
Sign, elaborate, discuss, or just ignore it.

Customising ships colour would be an excellent idea. Implementing this into the game would be very difficult though.

Doubt it would be difficult. I think the reason they wouldn't do this is that the only thing that sets the tech 2 ships distinguishable (without showing info) is the color. If they made tech 2 ships new models, they wouldn't have to worry about that. Let's make CLONE VATS useful! |

You have the BASE colour, this is grey for most ships now... blueish grey. Then you have a ship specific overlay. So T2 ships have a different top layer, problem solved. How do you prevent them going totally black? Make the available palets different for the base layer and the top layer. The Decal for the corp should be set by the CEO as the SHIP DECAL, often the Corp Emblem without the background.
What would this mean for the new graphics... yes, an overhaul! but its not that drastic an overhaul, the models have two variables for colour, and one for the logo which would be more of a watermark.
While out I thought of one more addendum, setting it like a Turret Effect or such... optional to reduce lag.

If have refused color customization of the ships for reduction of traffic - Use of the color scheme should be realized even on a client computer. It is an additional opportunity for the player to have more fan in game.

Player Created Content is a driving force behind the love of many Multiplayer games these days. Who wants to fly a boring ol' generic ship? Even just the option to put Corp and(or) Alliance Logos on your ship in a predesignated spot would be a good start. From there an actual paint shop even if limited to the sort of stuff you find in Forza and no uploaded images would be awesome. For those people who did not want the extra flare possibly causing lag or confusion they could have an option that turns it off on their client. I really doubt this would be that hard to impliment or that bad on the servers and in the meantime it would really make that ship YOUR ship. Pirates could finally fly their Jolly Rodger ! +++++++++++++++ I saw the Sign...!

Changing the color of a ship texture may not be heavy or anything to the network, thextures can have their color changed by having several layers. You have a layer for the material type, the armor and stuff shown on the surface, and you add a color over it. The color is added as another transparent layer.
Then you have a colored armor with all details and the network just sent the value of the color for each part of the paintjob (T2 ships have colored parts and not colored parts which are different paintjobs, you could choose two colors on most of the ships). So, at worse, you sent 4 bytes more for a ship... Sooo network heavy, just think about how big is name, position, turret types, turret positions and other stuff I can't think of.
Say yes to ship coloring! It does not cost to the servers, it only adds some work for the 3d artists and engineers to have a complyant engine and texture pack. As they are still improving and fixing what was released in trinity, I hope they can make such modification. -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast !

This would be a popular choice I think :P
513000.0 is the Volume of the Megathron, make paint 10isk per meter and its a 5.13m isk paintjob. A Rupture would cost 960,000isk.

Nyx volume: 58,200,000.0 m3 (1,000,000.0 m3 packaged) So yeah; 580,200,000 isk
In light of painting Larger ships like the Nyx that can't dock in stations where the theoretical paintshop would be... another POS piece, using paint supplies that work out about the same from NPC's.

wonderful idea. Adds each players touch to their character. Its hard to believe that in the vastness of space no one decided to paint their ship.

guys, volume != surface...
So, lets take the 3 root (can't draw math symbols easyly here and can't name them properly in english either!) of the ship volume and find an approx surface. Painting a mothership shouldn't be so much more expensive.
Surface of a sphere is 4*pi*r¦ r from volume is (wikipedia)
Then the surface from volume of a sphere is : 4*pi*(V*3/4pi)^(2/3) Now, from different ships volume with the paint price per m¦ you said : 10 isks per m¦ A frigate is 29 000 m3 => A cruiser is 110 000 m3 => A Battleship is 500 000 m3 => A carrier is 13 000 000 m3 => A mothership is 58 000 000 m3 => A titan is 145 000 000 m3 =>
I just don't have a proper calculator here to make a 3 root... I hope you get the basic idea. Surface increases slower than volume. -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast !

So thanks to Eleana...
so we are looking at something like: frigate: 21003.06 m2 from-> 29000 m3 cruiser: 51083.32 m2 from-> 110000 m3 battleship: 140172 m2 from-> 500000 m3
I don't feel like doing the rest but you get the idea...

My taste runs more to the dark blue/silver but yea, that is far closer to what a mighty battleship should look like than this silly powder blue crap.
*edit* if this idea is implemented or if we simply get a better default color, I may actually use the new gfx content. I reverted back to classic after seeing my Domi.

I'd have to agree on this one. I think everyone's always been eager to have custom color layers on their ships, and are apparently willing to pay for it. I'd think that it would be easy, too, having 2-3 transparency layers with color tinting on it, and maybe a few predetermined spots for each model that you could place your corp logo on if you wanted.

The paint shop idea would be a neat feature and the network and client overhead would not be very much, six bytes for a two tone ship, not too much to deal with. But there's another angle to this. CCP has always been very focused on how Eve looks, sometimes more so than how it works. I find it unlikely that they would allow players to paint ships in the fear that the pink hello kitty titan shows up on some gaming web site and people laugh at it, or more to the point, laugh at Eve for having a pink ship. CCP has always promoted how the game looks as part of their marketing strategy, so it's doubtful they would give that up.
What may be a compromise solution is, only allow a few preset colours or colour schemes from which player's can choose. This would also have the nice side effect of reducing both network and client overhead to something as small as one byte on the network and some 256 extra do dads on the client. (Sorry not a graphics guy, what would those be, normal maps? *shrug*).
Anyway, reduce the options to only what looks good and it may be a more viable solution.

Edited by: Malen Nenokal on 11/12/2007 19:11:52 To prevent pink ships and the like, CCP could have preset paint options. It would be easy to just not make pink available (and the other various pastel colors that would clash with the dark EVE universe). Since the paint would have to be specially made for the space flight, the various NPC industries could make certain types available. With the new graphics engine, even metalic/lusterous paints could be available.
I saw on Sisi the shuttle was gray for a few days, that means you have a specific graphical layer design for changing the hue alone. You know this would be matter of generating the items on the database and creating the proper interface to implement it.
Come on CCP, let us make our corp ships more uniform to the corp! Let the pirates look meaner than the carebears!

Edited by: Anaal Nathrakh on 11/12/2007 20:34:10 Personally I see no reason not to have pink ships, we have female players, homosexuals, people who can fly a pink ship and still be confident of their life. Why should we avoid the hello kitty army of thorax's?
More over I think being beaten by a pink ship would make me feel bad, and for some people beating someone up while in a pink ship would just be the cherry on top. There are a few shades of pink that work in EVE, I had one set up for a character UI, a bit much for the UI, but would do well on a Maelstrom. You avoid the pink capital ships by giving them a different palette.
as for lag, its client side, your sent the colour tag which could be an "encrypted" 1 byte character that relates to a table for colour and the level of gloss (none, matte, gloss, high gloss). The client has the option of ignoring it, like other effects, and now the ship flies about like it did before.

Edited by: culmor30 on 12/12/2007 03:41:18 This would be great, but textures are preloaded when you download the client, not when you first encounter a ship of x type, so in highly populated areas, unless you have T3, you're going to get some 1-2 mins of lag as all of those custom images load.
Believe me, I program stuff.
EDIT: And btw, Hello Kitty skins = copyright infringement.
Sorry to spoil the fun.
