I am not sure if it is Vista being more secure that is helping you in this instance since Vista does not use the boot.ini file. It has an entirely new method of booting.

From what I am observing, this only happens if you are using Win XP and if you have install EVE on C Drive.
Probably the easiest work around is to make a backup of boot.ini, install the patch, check for and restore the boot.ini file if accidentally deleted.
The day that EVE is truly bug-free, the EVE Gate will probably go super nova and kill us all. |

This only happens if you install the PATCH for the premium graphics content on a Windows XP system. For those of you who installed the full version, you need not worry - your critical system files were left intact.
No game should ever have some of its files named after critical system files - its just asking for trouble and is COMPLETELY unprofessional on CCP's part to make such a n00bish mistake.
Fixes here: http://www.maledictae.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7
There are other sources, but when else than a major crisis is a better time to plug a pirate (eve pirates) site? haha

Windows XP SP 2 is immune to this error... windows auto rebuilds the file apparently. *shrugs*

I'm not about to go deleting critical system files to test that theory.

Edited by: Viga Degan on 06/12/2007 21:41:19 hmm... odd. Seeing as I have a second PC that's in no way affected by Eve and didn't know about this BEFORE I rebooted I guess I was kind of lucky. Doubly lucky it seems as my Eve PC (the one I'm typing this out on now) didn't seem to be affected and it's no super gaming PC either, just a run of the mill stock Dell 8250, probably about 4 years old.
So saying, this isn't a problem affecting all players using Windows XP home edition. Consider this also, this system has never been tweaked, "upgraded" or otherwise messed with except for some more RAM. ::shrug::
Loaded the Trinity patch, got into game, downloaded and installed the Premium patch (though my PC currently doesn't support it) and rebooted. No problems! I got all worked up over nothing it seems :) Yay me.

You really dropped the ball on this one ccp. We're talking total pooch screw. If i was to frack up that bad at work, i wouldnt be back on monday...
My mobo died on my pc so im just on my laptop atm, I had no internet access at all untill my mate got home from work and he took me in! The only error I was getting back was missing dll files so I couldnt even fix the problem (windows repair console wouldnt copy files) so I was stuck. The only reason i got it working again without a reinstall (cant inject the files because dos wont recognise sata drives) was that i found the problem by pure luck and rebuilt the boot.ini witht he repair console.
I dont claim to be the best on computers but i know my way around them better then most. Im sure theres still other people out there that dont know how to fix this issue. its easy if you didnt reboot, but if you, like me installed it, checked it out for a few mins then went to bed it doesnt help much.
So to sum up, sort it out. This was a massive oversight.

Note to CCP: it states on the front page of the site... # You must have Windows installed not on the primary partition. # You must have at least 2 hard disks and the OS must be installed not on the primary, but the secondary hard disk
This is NOT correct. This issue will affect anyone with Eve installed on the boot partition (ie, C:), which is the default setup for anyone with one hard drive. It's how every pre-built computer from a major manufacturer is set up. Please don't compound your own*****-up by claiming this issue is less widespread than it is, and don't spread misinformation when your paying customers need assistance.

The client will not give you options to download the premium patch unless your card will support it. Am I wrong? |
