Originally by: shortattenionsp No sympathy for people that are not prepared in the simplest of ways. No one is saying you have to be a computer technician to fix this. What YOU are saying is, people who drive their cars without insurance, breakdown cover, tools, and a spare tire in the boot, should be entitled to compensation from the manufacturer when their cars breaks down. This, evidently, is not how things work. Not everyone can fix cars, but if you don't have a spare tire or any insurance, you're asking to get f**ked. People reasonably are expected to take simple precations against the failure of their cars, and their computers. If you have no facility whatsoever of fixing your PC when broke, it is inevitable you will fall foul of some problem at some point.
Realistically, how many people, considering these were people up at 12pm or later (only 40% of eves userbase is from the US, apparently) to install a patch on an mmo the moment it comes out, and don't have windows installed on the primary partition (uncommon, especially among factory built PCs), will not have access to a second computer the day afterwards? I cannot think of a scenario where I have access to my PC but do not have access to another PC within an hour of waking up, unless I walk into the middle or a forest and sleep there, or injure myself or fall ill. 99% of the people with this problem will live in prosperous democracies where internet access and computers are completely commonplace. It is almost impossible to escape computers & internet access. You do not need to be a computer expert to read a forum post and fix something in 2 minutes. Nor do a google search of which the first result shows you how the fix the problem. No one is asking you to rebuild the gearbox on your car, just change the bloody windowscreen wiper fluid.
Nobody is saying CCP didn't f**k up. They're saying its your own fault if you have made no preperations whatsoever at all for a problem with your computer, which no doubt is vital to their lives and contains very precious data. If you care enough to come crying on a forum (and you can access a forum, for that matter, it can be fixed in 2 minutes) you should care enough to do a backup, or have made some sort of preperation (all its takes is a friggen windows CD) against failure.
In short, its a fking easy problem to fix, with a single google search. The number of people effected, that is: 12-4am patchers, with none primary partition windows installs, XP users, that don't have a windows CD, backup of some sort, antivirus/firewall software that backs up your boot.ini, system restore turned off, and no access to another pc or internet connection, is probably very, very few. You cannot sue people for stuff like this in most of the rest of the civilised world. In the end its your choice to install peoples software, agree to a Eula, and not take even the smallest precations against a problem with your computer.
A) This is less akin to getting a flat and more akin to a issue requiring a recall, like tires exploding. If I get a flat from normal wear and tear, I'm fine, if I get a flat because the brake shoots a spike through the tire when I press the gas pedal, I'm gonna be a little upset B) I imagine most people aren't preparing a complete backup of every file they have prior to every patch update C) I imagine most people aren't preparing for catastrophic failure following a patch update(out of game, everyone is prepared for ingame catastrophic failure) D) I imagine a lot of people don't have a second computer to check up what the **** went wrong following said catastrophic failure.
Legally, they probably don't owe anyone ****, but that doesn't mean that it wouldn't be a good idea to throw a good faith gesture out there

EULA's are almost completely worthless, except as a boiler playe, a good deal of common freeware programs have EULAs that entitle the owners to all your property, first born children, power of attorney, etc.
None of them have any merit
