Hi there,
On the description of the 'Ballistic Control System', it reads:
Quote: A computer system designed for monitoring and guiding missiles in flight, thus allowing for superior effectivenes and lethality. Penalty: Using more than one type of this module or similar modules that affect the same attribute on the ship will be penalized.
Does anyone know what the penalty for using more than one is?

Badly phrased is what the penalty is, it seems.
First one works at 100% effectiveness. Second one with about 87%. Third 57% fourth 27% fifth 11%
If I recall correctly. And note the numbers are approximates, you can find the exact formula in some other thread, or mail me in game and I'll get it for you as soon as I'm back.
So if you fit 2 of them you'll only get 187% of the effect of one, fitting three gives you 244%.

Actually, it’s not quite.
The second module is only 87% effective.
However, because it’s a multiplicative bonus, that’s actually more of a boost than the first gives.
Lets take a heavy missile launcher II. With max skills, and no ship bonus,
0BCS: 24.95dps. +0.00dps (100% of base damage) 1BCS: 30.68dps +5.73dps (122.95% of base damage) 2BCS: 36.70dps +6.02dps (147.05% of base damage) 3BCS: 41.25dps +4.55dps (165.37% of base damage) 4BCS: 43.73dps +2.48dps (175.21% of base damage).
So in absolute terms, that second ballistic control is actually gaining you _more_ dps than the first. But only slightly.
The purpose of stacking penalty is to avoid multiplicative exponential bonuses. So you don’t end up with 1.23 * 1.23* 1.23 *1.23 which would end up as 229% of base damage, and increasing faster and faster as you add more damage mods. Where with the current stacking system, the first mod is full effect. The second provides a linear, rather than multiplicative increase. The third and fourth are still worth having, but provide less in absolute terms (the 4th as you can see above provides about 10% of the absolute dps, or about half the effect of the first or second)
