Half-Life series (never finished HL1 got stuck in a bug and didnt want to restart  )
Counter Strike: Source (first online game - surf maps ftw! All i play now)
Portal (just.....incredible)
Crimson Skies (so funny - classic flight "sim?")
Oblivion (i just keep coming back to this game, never goes away forever)
UT2004 (why didnt UTClasic have dodge jump? UT2004 has such an amazing community, see "ArenaMaster" mod)
Call of Duty series (the REAL games, 1, 2 and 4  )
Trackmania Nations (amazing free game, really racked up the hours on this badboy  , another great community too)

EF2000 (Military Flight Simulator, they don't make them anymore )
Master of Magic (I miss getting the hero uber and taking on entire armies)
Civilization I/II/III/IV (Yeah i'm a fan of Sid Meier)
UFO: Enemy Unknown (The atmosphere, the incendary grenade, the barn, the screams... )
Master of Orion I (Gimme that Antarean Tech)
System Shock 2 (Lights out, sound up)
Covert Action (Max Remington, more of a photographer than a spy)
Rome: Total War (Well, i enjoyed all the Total War series)
Morrowind (Great RPG, explore anywhere, decent depth to it)
Frontier: Elite II (The best of the series imho)
Microprose was the best publishing house for a some time, it's been swallowed up since.

In no particular order:
Nexus: The Jupiter Incident (the story wasn't great, but the gameplay sure was)
Master of Orion 2 (Still great, 3 was such a massive disappointment)
Neverwinter Nights (1&2 with expansions) (Good storytelling and fun to play)
Transport Tycoon Deluxe (like Railroad tycoon, but with all forms of transport, played it for ages)
Command and Conquer (the original was so much more fun than the others)
Red Alert 2 (great game)
Privateer 2: The Darkening (good story and fun to play)
Wing Commander 3 & 4, also the Wing Commander 5 Spin-off "Secret Ops", much better than the original release.

Gah, are you a complete masochist? All those random encounters are like torture. Well when I say 'random encounter' I infact mean 'every time you move two pixels on the map encounter'. The only reason it says 'at least 32 hours gameplay' on the back of the box is because that's how many encounters you'll have to endure just to get from one side of the map to the other. And as if it wasn't bad enough just how damn repetative it gets, the combat itself is just dull dull dull. What where the designers thinking? "Hey guys, I've got a great way on how we can immerse and excite the player in life or death situations, menu driven combat, eh eh?".
So you've just sat through another dull transition effect which is supposed to get you fired up for your 12 billionth random encounter (which is exactly the same as every other encounter you've had except the numbers get a little bigger each time) but infact just serves to invoke instant rage and a feeling of impending boredom. You're just wishing they'd get on with it, but no. Every action and counter reaction has to load and play its own long drawn out animation and sound effects further breaking up the game and dragging things out for as long as humanly possible.
Hours later when you finaly reach the next village which was only a few inches away on the map, assuming you havn't yet thrown your joypad through your screen, your mind has become so degraded from tedium that you cant even remember the story line and why you wanted to go there in the first place.
In short, this game was poorly poorly designed and I really cant understand why its so popular.

I tried really hard to like this game. Pretty much everyone I knew loved it saying it was the greatest game ever etc, but no matter what I did I never really got into it and was unable to comment on the 'amazing' story and how FF7 was the 'best' FF game etc and felt like I was missing something

The story line had its moments, such as the death of Cloud's wench, but in the end I think if you were to just hand someone the game script and have them read it they wouldn't think it was that special. I believe the reason why people think the story is so rewarding is only because they had to endure so much playing the game to get to the conculsion.

Final Fantasy VII is made of win. Random encounters put me off every playing any other RPGs, but FFVII is worth it.
It needs to be remade for PS3.

Let's see .. also no particular order here:
1. Operation Flashpoint - cause when it was out in 2001, it was one of a kind, unique, and to this day is perhaps the only true military simulator out there.
2. GTA San Andreas - sandbox of fun
3. GTR 2 - full of win racing sim!
4. Soldiers - Heroes of WW2 (plus perhaps it's sequel, Faces of War) - added direct control of units to a rts game, destructible environment, quite realistic gameplay
5. Total War series - must have all of em! Empire's looking to come around nicely ..
6. Half Life 2 - one of the greatest single player experiences I have had in shooters to this very day ..
7. Crysis - similar to HL¦, I just like the Combine better than frosty aliens
8. Battlefield 1942 - I had tons of fun in the original BF, more than in every sequel they put out for more reasons than I care to list and write down here ^^
Here it gets a little awkward, as I would rather name a genre instead of particular games, since they have a new game out on an annual basis .. so
9. Random football (european) manager game - is lately one out of EA's portfolio, if you can live with some bugs it can be a lot of fun (tis quite the timesink, however)
10. Random sports game - Madden, NHL Hockey, Fifa, PES .. too many to mention, I enjoy all of them, especially playing them with a buddy.

Still kind of amazed that no one else has listed Myth II: Soulblighter. Did you all grow up under a gaming rock and miss not only one of the best single player games but for its day multiplayer as well? The game had brilliance oozing out of it.
