Ico Tomb Raider Silent Hill Half-Life Project Zero
EVE is in there somewhere, not sure where though. Since all the others are linear story-driven games, and EVE is pretty much the antithesis of that, it's hard to compare. -

Ooh tough one. So many great games out there.
RTS:
Anno 1602 Anno 1701 Red Alert 2 World in Conflict Age of Empires II Homeworld II Rome Total War
FPS:
Far Cry Ghost Recon Return to Castle Wolfenstein Battlefield 1942: Desert Combat Mod Rainbow Six:3 Raven Shield Swat 4

In terms of time played, Eve, Anno 1602 and Raven Shield stand out bigtime :)

1. Master of Orion 2 2. Elite : First Encounters (the third one) 3. X-Com : UFO Defence (the first one) 4. Total Annihilation (and Core Contingency expansion, screw Supreme Commander) 5. Sid Meyer's Alpha Centauri (plus Alien Crossfire expansion pack) 6. Master of Magic 7. Command and Conquer (again the first one) 8. Civilisation (the very first one too, but the rest weren't bad either) 9. Heroes of Might and Magic 3 + expansions (next up Heroes 5, then Heroes 4, then a tie between 1 and 2) 0. Homeworld (the expansion pack to the first one, then HW2, then the original HW as a "best to not so much" scale)
and of course EVE (the one and only), but that's a whole different category

Infiltration Hidden & Dangerous 2 SWAT3 Deus Ex (Yeah. I prefer dorky "tactical" shooters.)
Homeworld 2 Ground Control (I know HW2 isn't regarded as fondly as some of the others but Relic pwn face at interface and control. Whacking a load of units into a strike formation and watching the resourcers automagically repairing ships was just chuffing awesome. Ground Control was tactical. Flanking tanks and calling in artillery with scouts was uber cool)
Tie Fighter I-War (Tie Fighter for generally being awesome. I-War for being a bit more thoughtful and having physics. Really felt like you were in charge of a ship. I must buy a new joystick sometime and reinstall it and the second one)
Planescape: Torment (A bit emo-ey and gillen-ish but makes every other CPRG's attempts at "storyline" seem vaguely laughable)
Street Fighter 2 (Misspent youth. 50p on top of the machine. Jumpers for goalposts. Isn't it? Isn't it?)
This list is subject to change but I think those are the games I have been most impressed with overall. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

Gah, are you a complete masochist? All those random encounters are like torture. Well when I say 'random encounter' I infact mean 'every time you move two pixels on the map encounter'. The only reason it says 'at least 32 hours gameplay' on the back of the box is because that's how many encounters you'll have to endure just to get from one side of the map to the other. And as if it wasn't bad enough just how damn repetative it gets, the combat itself is just dull dull dull. What where the designers thinking? "Hey guys, I've got a great way on how we can immerse and excite the player in life or death situations, menu driven combat, eh eh?".
So you've just sat through another dull transition effect which is supposed to get you fired up for your 12 billionth random encounter (which is exactly the same as every other encounter you've had except the numbers get a little bigger each time) but infact just serves to invoke instant rage and a feeling of impending boredom. You're just wishing they'd get on with it, but no. Every action and counter reaction has to load and play its own long drawn out animation and sound effects further breaking up the game and dragging things out for as long as humanly possible.
Hours later when you finaly reach the next village which was only a few inches away on the map, assuming you havn't yet thrown your joypad through your screen, your mind has become so degraded from tedium that you cant even remember the story line and why you wanted to go there in the first place.
In short, this game was poorly poorly designed and I really cant understand why its so popular.

I tried really hard to like this game. Pretty much everyone I knew loved it saying it was the greatest game ever etc, but no matter what I did I never really got into it and was unable to comment on the 'amazing' story and how FF7 was the 'best' FF game etc and felt like I was missing something -----

Originally by: Rawr Cristina I tried really hard to like this game. Pretty much everyone I knew loved it saying it was the greatest game ever etc, but no matter what I did I never really got into it and was unable to comment on the 'amazing' story and how FF7 was the 'best' FF game etc and felt like I was missing something
The story line had its moments, such as the death of Cloud's wench, but in the end I think if you were to just hand someone the game script and have them read it they wouldn't think it was that special. I believe the reason why people think the story is so rewarding is only because they had to endure so much playing the game to get to the conculsion.

Let's see .. also no particular order here:
1. Operation Flashpoint - cause when it was out in 2001, it was one of a kind, unique, and to this day is perhaps the only true military simulator out there.
2. GTA San Andreas - sandbox of fun 3. GTR 2 - full of win racing sim! 4. Soldiers - Heroes of WW2 (plus perhaps it's sequel, Faces of War) - added direct control of units to a rts game, destructible environment, quite realistic gameplay 5. Total War series - must have all of em! Empire's looking to come around nicely .. 6. Half Life 2 - one of the greatest single player experiences I have had in shooters to this very day .. 7. Crysis - similar to HL¦, I just like the Combine better than frosty aliens 8. Battlefield 1942 - I had tons of fun in the original BF, more than in every sequel they put out for more reasons than I care to list and write down here ^^
Here it gets a little awkward, as I would rather name a genre instead of particular games, since they have a new game out on an annual basis .. so
9. Random football (european) manager game - is lately one out of EA's portfolio, if you can live with some bugs it can be a lot of fun (tis quite the timesink, however)
10. Random sports game - Madden, NHL Hockey, Fifa, PES .. too many to mention, I enjoy all of them, especially playing them with a buddy. __________

Notice how most of the games listed here have excellent storytelling. How come games like that aren't created anymore or are far too short to be remembered for long?
My list so i don't go offtopic (no particular order) 1)Freespace 1&2 (Best storyline ever and epic fleetbattles) 2)Civilization (It's still better than 2,3 AND 4 together) 3)Half Life 1 & 2 + episodes (All one big expensive game anyhow) 4)Command & Conquer (includes RA , generals but NOT 3 nor tiberian sun) 5)Alien Legacy (nobody knows this one but it's uber!) 6)Supreme Commander (This is how RTS should be yet it doesn't have much success, weird) 7)Transport Tycoon Deluxe (Playing with trains & planes all day! yay!) 8)Diablo 2 + LoD (The real meaning of hack&slash) 9)?? 10) ??

Sweet, Trespasser got some mentions. I STILL boot that glitchy mess of a game up becasue it's just so cool.
My list:
1 - Thief II: the Metal Age (Best audio ever implemented into a game) 2 - Medieval II:Total War (Most impressive spectacle and deepest strategy ever) 3 - Trespasser (Pioneer of 100% physics-based animations for all characters and objects - made gameplay HUGELY unpredicable and very, very fun(and glitchy)) 4 - Silent Hunter III (Nothing cooler than calculating torpedo firing solutions and harrassing the Allies with Uboats) 5 - Shadow of the Colossus (Google it, no explanation will suffice) 6 - Age Of Empires II (Classic rts fun) 7 - Gran Turismo 4 (Very in depth, very difficult and very rewarding) 8 - Dark Forces (Old DOS starwars FPS - very nicely done. Played it nearly everyday after school for over a year) 9 - Delta Force I (Sneaking around and sniping in beautiful Voxel terrains was never more fun than this) 10- Gun (Very high production values, very fun. Possibly the shortest and sweetest game I've ever played)

I approve of Hearts of Iron II and Silent Hunter III on a top ten list - great games imo. Niche games unfortunately, and the Silent Hunter series in particular suffers from very bad QA upon release (IV wasn't even properly playable out of the box, dunno about III as I only started playing it on 1.4), but fun for sure. __________

I can't believe I missed that one. It's hilarious in every possible meaning of the word, not least due to buggy/skewed physics (the 'afterburner' allows you to jump halfway across the map if you got a nice run-up) but it's still the only game to date I know of that allows total deformation of your car - From splitting it in half to bending it so the front met the rear to crushing it (in a DOOM-style crusher or unfortunate encounter with giant quarry truck that took up all lanes on the road) to about 1/4th it's original height.. and still being able to drive it -----

All Time:
In no particular order
1. Championship Manager probably late 90s version, gone downhill recently. 2. Deus Ex - Nostalgic and sentimental reasons 3. Football Manager - The start of a trend 4. Privateer 2 - Got storyline, randomness and epic battles just about right. 5. Tie Fighter - See above but earlier, loved the sekwit missions. 6. MechWarrior 2/MechCommander - First forays into online gaming. 7. Police Quest Series - IV was a bit weird but the others were good, trying to draw the pentagram took me weeks. 8. GTASA - Starting to get samey now but was quite epic when it came out. 9. X beyond the frontier - Got trading, fighting and missions right, some of them damn hard. 10. NOLF 2 - One of the funniest moments in gaming doing the mission on the tricycle.
Old Skool Classics.
1. Matchday. 2. Spyhunter. 3. Skooldaze. 4. UNITED. 5. Rebel Assault. 6. Speedball 2. 7. Sensible Soccer. 8. Mugsy. 9. Deathrace. 10. Saboteur.
Honourable mentions:
1. High Heat Baseball, one of the better mixes of strategy/arcade. 2. Hitman - Killing Lee Hong one of my gaming highlights. 3. Harpoon 2 - Sucker for Cold war strategy games. 4. Operation Flashpoint - Almost completed it apart from managing to cut off the general, never could land that copter. 5. KOTOR - Simply brilliant, #2 is terrible in comparison, part of it was ruined. 6. Dungeon Keeper - Great fun being the baddy, sadly towards the end exposed as something of a zerg rush. 7. PES 2, 3 - Best football simulations so far. 8. Carmageddon - Utter carnage

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention No One Lives Forever. What a spectacular game. That would be my....number 3 or 4 at least. Now and then, I still listen to the soundtrack CD that came with it.
Anyone remember that one?
The two NOLF games are still my favorite FPS's. Super stylish fun.
In no order: NOLF 1/2 Warlords 2/3 Burger Time (fear my mighty pepper!) Galactic Civilizations 2 X-Wing Vampire: Bloodlines (a lot of fun despite its flaws -- like everything Troika did -- and the haunted house part still creeps me out) Nethack (dog needs food badly.) Return to Castle Wolfenstein Mechwarrior 3 (aim for the legs!) Neverwinter Nights
