I'm not versed in 0.0 fleet combat by any means, but from what I hear it usually comes down to two fleets of sniper-fit battleships about 150kms apart instapopping each other one ship at a time.
My question is.. if this is view is even accurate.. what keeps one side from keeping a fleet of AC/Blasterboats in a safespot, using covops ships to get two or three warp-in points around their fleet, then sending in dictors to lock them down and warping your own fleet right on top of them and well under their guns? ----- My in Eve Profile |

I'm sure people do this quite a lot, but I think that in any situation with a large sniper fleet present, you're going to have two conditions: 1. Gate that the sniper fleet surrounds will be bubbled 2. Snipers will be aligned to warp out
This means that an attacking fleet of close range ships will have to slowboat out of the interdiction bubble then warp to their targets. Once the sniper fleet realizes this is happening they'll be warping out in a hurry.
Now, if you can get the drop on them by going through another gate that's one thing, but most likely it may be bubbled as well. ---------------- Tarminic - 29 Million SP in pink Forum Warfare |

Edited by: Woolygimp on 08/12/2007 06:18:40 A tanked battleship can typically tank several snipers depending on the quality of the tank. Being able to tank 5 or more isn't unheard of. Most snipers are completely untanked, so if you get blasters near them they go down really, really, really fast.
Check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jL-z4B_BE40
A Rokh tanks a Sniper Megathron, 2 NOS Domi's, a Scorpion, a Drake, and a Typhoon for around 20 minutes before they get through his shields. A well tanked battleship isn't to be underestimated, I fly a Rokh and I'll never snipe again with it.

They go down fast, and while a single BS with a good active tank could be able to tank a handful of snipers, that strategy would never work in these fleets, where Alpha Strike is key :)

Yeah, I know nothing can survive the alpha from 40 Battleships...however if you are in a blaster boat you shouldn't be floating towards the enemy fleet to begin with. You really need to utilize warp, and get in there.

Lag.
The snipers don't have to worry about range (too much) and can just slowboat out in a few different directions. The other side, close range fitted, have to approach, which in a lagged out system can take 90+ seconds to respond.
Have fun with that ---

I'd love to hear te results one way or another now that client side lag should be a non-issue.. C'mon theres a war on so get to blasting each other already..

Like lofty said...lag. It works sometimes but in general sniper tactic is the only viable means of dealing with lag spikes resulting from large fleets. I hate sniperfleets tho and am a big fan 5km to 20km ranged fighting allas :/

I believe the real reason is a lot simpler. You get in close, there's more chance of being tackled, and a tackled ship is a dead ship.
Standing off at range your support ships have a chance to shoot down the tacklers before they get to the snipers.

Pretty sure the lag issue with large fleets is server side. Turn your graphics as far down as they will go, turn off sound and zoom out to 200km and you will still get a slideshow.

Which is why I'd love to here somwe actual hands on reports of a current fleet fight.. Technically it should run much better due to the cpu not having to do double duty as a video card and not having client side lag influencing what the server receives due to modual lag and players constantly clicking things to get them to work only to confuse the server even more when a packet finally arrives to be processed.. Now things should run smooth and do as you want so the flow of packets won't get all bent out of shape multiplied by however many combatants are on the grid leading to the dreaded desync and node crash..

Its about versatility, especially when lag enters the equation. You are able to deliver at every range. Fleet fittet battleships are the most versatile of all ships, and they are extremly deadly in the hands of good pilots with a skilled FC in lead.
The wheel have been invented long ago when it comes to big fleet engagements. It is well proven.
Many have tried neutron megas and torp ravens, but they all ended up on the loosing side. I especially recall a bob (rkk i think it was) attempt once, that ended in horror because they landed abit off. -

Wrong.
My Sniper Mega can still target at fleet range and shoot at fleet range (and i only had to use one lock range charge so I have decent lock times)
My alt's Sniper tempest got hurt a bit harder but yes, can still shoot sniper ranges and lock at sniper ranges (although he did have to work a bit harder to get back sorted).
at no time has this patch pulled my guns below 150km range without scripts, it's only been lock ranges I've had to tweak with.
------- CEO of Maids. No I didn't pick the name. I've grown rather fond of it though.
