Well I was sitting around have a good old chat with my friends last night and a topic cropped up that got my attention, You see there is a new laptop in town thats made by ASUS called the Eee PC. Basically its a laptop with a 4-8gb static memory hard drive, no dvd, no floppy, but with usb ports an SDCard slot, 900Mhz processor, 512mb-1gb memory and the old Intel GMA 900 graphics chip. Has stereo speakers plus a tiny 7" 800x480 lcd display, this little lappy basically is as low spec as you would want to go but the real bonus is the price, I mean its CHEAP as in super duper cheap, as in I could buy one from one pay check and not feel like I am broke sort of cheap!
So the real question is, Can this thing run EVE? Now apparently it runs out of the box on Linux (power to ASUS) but can also happily have Windows XP installed.
Has anyone seen one of these in action? Has anyone got one? Do you have a friend who has one? If you have access to one or have done it already, can someone please let us know how EvE Online runs on this little thing. Linux and or WindowsXP please.
I am very interested to know how it fares.

Thanks mate, looks like you were the only person who is even remotely interested in a low cost laptop for eve on the go.

Doubt it can run classic, mostly because of the proc..EVE is very CPU intensive. -----------------------------

The GMA900 can barely run DirectX 7 titles, let alone any DX8 games.

FWIW: I've run EVE on my inspiron 6400 Core 2 with GMA 950 with no troubles. The 950's very similar to the 900.
Only problem i could see would be the CPU being so weak. You'd also need windows. Not sure how well Wine / Cedega would handle DX on an Intel...

it's a cool laptop but not suitable for gaming, wait till the new line of Flash based mac book pros come out, those will be nice but certainly not cheap...

Wouldn't it run better with the new linux client? I mean its preinstalled with linux, Or perhaps does the linux port take a performance hit v's the native windows?
Either way I know the cpu is low sped and the GMA900 is not exactly brilliant but I have seen youtube videos of people playing farcry on it. I guess the next question is if EvE supports the 800x480 resolution?
Also for those suggesting that we wait for a mac laptop or any other laptop from blah blah. Let me give you the price of this device so you know why I would even bother asking about if it would run EvE.
US $400 UK ú219 AU $500
Now thats cheap, ultra cheap and hence the interest. I want eve on the go and with CCP conveniently forgetting about the eve mobile edition well...

Interesting, certainly perhaps we need CCP to roll out a branded version that comes preinstalled on an ultraportable, coupled with a dedicated neocomm styled OS.. that includes a web browser better then the in game version.
mm..
but random wants aside, seems an interesting, if limited toy. only problems to me would be lack of drives and the like, and other problems from ultra low-spec design.
Why put 400 into this when some careful shopping and just a few more bucks will net me a marked-down conventional laptop?
Why get an ultraportable thats not at least Almost as lovely as full size. I would love a computer about the size of a hardback, and affordable and durable and flexible.
looks like we have 3 outta 4 wants here, just need some prices to drop a bit more and some tech's to get a bit better.

For about $600 at Dell outlet you could have a Laptop that could run Eve just fine. And it would have a DVD and bigger HD :)
Me personally I bought an Insperon 9400 there with 17" widescreen ultrasharp(1920x1200),core 2 duo, 80gb hd, 1gb for $800. Then yanked the x1400 vid card that came with it for a 7800go snagged of ebay for $125. Now I have a laptop that will run multiple Eve clients easily. It actually runs games like Vanguard, Unreal 3, and Crysis just fine at lower res(1680x1050) and medium settings. Fantastic portable gaming for under $1000

tbh you should be able to get a desktop computer for $400-500 that could run eve premium, provided you put it together yourself and buy the parts from the right places (newegg or tigerdirect).
But if you need to get a laptop, you are probably going to have to spend more. --------------

Well I have read lots of hypothetical comments on its viability but so far not one person has said if they know of anyone with one.
Ok lets try this, has anyone got an old old laptop with similar performances and tried eve?

Work in the Industry, we've recently started selling these, someone on the team bought one to play around with, and for a run of the mill laptop it's great, but i really wouldn't buy one to game with, the Solid state HD is nice and quick, but it just can't handle lots of activity on the screen at once and the resolution isn't that great.
Oh, and if you want one before the new year you'll be hard pressed to find any, these things seem to have turned into this years tickle me elmo :p

or you could just install windows xp on it, many people have and it works just fine.
Actually I watched a youtube of someone with vista on the Eee PC 4G and that apparently works ok too.

Edited by: Skarsnik on 09/12/2007 16:07:14 Right I have one of these along with my friend who has been going through the motions of putting XP on the machine -
Has done the following :
Added 2gb Memory Changed OS to Win XP Put in a SDHC 4gb card Installed EVE
Result - it works but the res is very low so only useable for trading/skill changing/chatting, but it does work.
I'm awaiting my 2gb delivery so I can get it sorted out.
EDIT - forgot to mention he installed EVE of the SD card not the internal solid state disk. I'll also get him to post up asap.
Oh and if you want to get one in the UK they are quiet difficult to get hold of BUT Toys 'R Us stock them and have a few left. ------------- Your signature exceeds the maximum allowed filesize of 24000 bytes -Kreul Intentions ([email protected])

Sweet, that's more than enough for a little portable.
I didn't know that it could take 2gb ram, btw have you thought of getting an 8gb SDHC and installing windows on that?
another question, how bad is it in space? could you comfortably run a lvl2 mission? may have fun in an AF when on the go.

Only the more expensive models can upgrade to 2gb ram. 4g and up, those are 299 euro's or 400 dollars. (afaik)
tbh, i'd rather spend 500 euro's on a laptop that can run eve on a decent resolution than pay 299 for one that cant. x |

what you forget though is the diminuative size of the Eee, its small, its glove box in the car small, its convenient and fits in a school/work bag, not needing you to carry it separately.
I like the idea and would go for the 8gb version for sure.

Not sure on the speed thing for lvl2 missions yet, as he's 250miles away from me atm. And tbh I thought about installing winxp on the SD card but the EVE install apparently took around 2 hrs due to the expanding and install on the SD card, however winxp would take even longer.
As to those saying why get something so small and going with a larger lappy ofr alittle more cash, it all comes down to what you'd want to use it for. I myself will be using it as a Dive planning laptop and my Garmin training tracking software so portability was key. ------------- Your signature exceeds the maximum allowed filesize of 24000 bytes -Kreul Intentions ([email protected])

Edited by: Jarod on 10/12/2007 14:01:04 EVE-Classic's running quite well on the Eee 701 4Gb (was 512Mb which I've upgraded to 2Gb)
It's installed on a 4Gb HCSD card, and took a while to install as I did it over a network...
The XP install on the C: Drive is just over 2Gb (The drive is Compressed) That includes all the Hotfixes and Updates, Office 2007 minimal install.

Not sure wether I'd want to run any missions, the screens 800x480, but for skill training, trading and chatting it works really well....

The Intel video card in that laptop will not let EvE Classic run, it needs to have at least Hardware Transform and Lightning (T&L).
A current NVIDIA or ATI portable video card would do for EvE, but not some Intel video card.

Right specially for you and just to see how easy it was, I got an alt and did some mining... the results are here:
EEE - Undocking from the station EEE - Heading into an Asteroid Field EEE - Mining
The Average FPS are approx:
In a station - 15-18 fps In space and mining - 5-15 fps
I'd say most of the time it was around 10 fps

10fps on a small screen, Were laughing, that's perfect, I grew up with an Amiga500 where some first person shooters were running at 3fps (three), So 10 fps on a small 7" screen is fine by me, screenies looks nice, thank you for you for this, You made me really happy :)
Out of curiosity, have you overclocked your cpu to the advertised 900mhz yet? I hear they underclocked the cpu to keep the system a little cooler and give a 5-10% battery life.
