I've trained up an alt in my corp to be able to handle R&D missions.
Current corp standing is 6.85 vs the r&d corp.
When I checked the agent with my alt it says
"You need a minimum effective corp standing of at least 4.80, in addition to an effective faction, corp or personal standing of at least 6.80 to use this agent"
Which is satisified since the effective corp standing is now at 6.85. But the agent refuses to talk to me. My alt has no corp standing (never done a mission in his life)
Any one can give me some tips ?

Not YOUR corp standing, but your character's standing towards the corp. You need to get some standing for your alt.

So my alt will need 4.8 or 6.8 ? (Using this example)
Quite confused with the way EVE puts out such info.

Yes it is confusing, especially as it should be written as the reverse:
the agent require:
a) at least a 4.8 standing with the agent corporation that can be given by your character standing or by your corporation standing (first problem, 2 different use of corporation) and
b) much more important, at least a 6,8 standing with the agent corporation that can be given only by your character standing with the agent corporation or the specific agent (but it is not possible to get a personal standing with a R&D agent as the R&D mission don't give standing).
As b) is higher than a) it make a) pointless.
The big difference with other agents are that:
1) R&D agent care primally about your character standing with the agent corporation, not your faction standing of your player corporation standing with the agent.
2) you can't get a better standing with the agent running mission for him, differently from other agents, so you will not get anything useful sharing R&D missions with other characters.

From my personal experiance your alt will need the 6.8 standing with the Agent. Im assuming this is with a high quality (18) lvl 4?
Standing gain is a slow slog with R&D corps ive found, since most don't have anything higher than a level 3 to work with (combat mission wise), lots of boreing low gain missions.
Also try and find a Cosmos agent for the R&D corp your working on, since that will give you a pretty big bump in standings when completed.

b) can also be obtained via faction standing.
