Was ratting in .4 hoping for some PvP opportunity and got targetted by a Stabber; so I think: "ok I'm dead but lets do some damage". Try to target my weapons on him but untargetting the rats and retargetting the weapons took so long, I didn't get a single shot off before blowing up.
Looking back I could have done everything a lot quicker, i.e. target lock as soon as he turned up, then unlock rats, then reactive weapons on new target.
Nevermind, all was insured and clone was up to date, no damage done.

First, congratz on your encounter! And it sounds like you have the right attitude to be a great PvP pilot.
Quick tip of the day:
Originally by: Poreuomai Was ratting in .4 hoping for some PvP opportunity
You lost the second you you went in the belt. I would recommend you fit and fly your ship for EITHER ratting OR hunting, then DO either ratting or hunting. If ratting in low-sec spam the scan button and jet if theres someone on the scanner. If hunting well, do exactly (or learn)what that guy did to you.

Yes.
My ship was exactly as I wanted it to be (for PvP), but it was a huge mistake to take on the rats while hunting. Must resist those "red crosses" in future.

Part II.
The second attempt went slightly better, though I still got killed.
Jumped into an asteroid belt and saw two fellow members of Republic Military School ratting away. Ignoring the pretty red crosses I jump to the next belt. Nothing there.
It then occurred to me that the two ratting corp members would probably get a visit from a pirate very soon, just like I had, and so I jumped back to the belt and sure enough there was a big red flashing ship with a bounty-skull.
This time all went to plan, I select, lock-target, orbit and activate weapons within a second or two, and my missiles start flying and my auto-cannon starts shooting. So far so good.
Needless to say it wasn't long before I was floating in my pod and I had just enough time to add "LOLZ" to the local chat before waking up in my brand new clone. Never-the-less I had managed to do at least a bit of damage (half a dozen of my missiles found their target) though his shields were barely scratched.
So ... I'll go back to earning ISK for a while and will return with a better ship and a bit more experience.

Grats..
This sounds pretty similar to what happened to me last night. I was ratting in .4 with my Vexor, when a yellow popped into the belt I was ratting in. I had the rat i was working on into structure and since the yellow who warped in hadn't done anything i figured I was ok..
Bzzzt..next thing I know another of his corp mates warps in and before I knew it...was awake in my clone.
Next time Im ratting in low sec and someone comes near, I scoot. The hell with the rats :)

Your first pvp experience went way better then mine. I was ratting down in syndicate in a rupture and some D2 guy in an inty came and blew me up. I didn't even hit him once but it didn't help that I did the same targetting mistake that you did. You gotta lock the guy as soon as possible, because its sooner that you start doing damage. You may even get lucky and hit the guy with his hardeners down. Also, as mention earlier fit for either pvp or pve.

Heh just keep at it - as long as you learn something from each fight you'll have won - even if you get blown up :). I remember my first pvp experience: Was in a small corp and had just gotten my first megathron. So I got the bright idea to take it into 0.0 to do some ratting. Talked to some corpmates and off we went in 2 Megas and an Apoc. At the 0.0 choke (this was before new entry points to 0.0 were added) we jumped in and got horribly owned by the resident blob. I managed to get my Mega out somehow though - only to have it die to rats 30 minutes later and one system over. Lesson: Get a scout and NPCs can scramble! (again this was long ago - not so much of a problem now)

did you get the shakes and get nervous, or was it just another encounter you faced calmly.
i miss the days of the shakes before a good fight.

Yeah i can understand getting the shakes before pvp lol.
I had a carrier called in on me and a buddy when we were in armageddons camping gates...
Now everytime I go out, I expect something similiar to that to happen.
1 week ago it was a carrier... last night it was command ships... what next? lol

No, I didn't get nervous, partly because I was focusing on what needed doing and partly because I wasn't risking anything valuable.
Ask me again after I've been involved in a corp war where winning matters.

Edited by: Dohbart on 14/12/2007 01:27:11 My first pvp experience was over before I knew I was in a pvp experience.
I was about 30 minutes into the noob tutorial and was approaching the warpgate in Todaki with my shiny new Ibis of Death. I thought my ship was bugged or something because it started targetting some ship that was getting kinda close all on its own. I took one weak hit to my shield and then there was a big explosion on my screen. That's when I learned that Concord is extremely non-violent and will squish people being naughty in their sight as my attacker go squooshed right in front of me. It was over so fast, I never even saw what kind of ship it was or his name, but he sent me hatemail and called me an "as*hole." I'm still wondering what an as*hole is, but I guess its bad.
Don't know why he attacked me, or even who he was, but I lol'd and knew I found a good game in Eve.

lol my first pvp experience wasnt as fair as the ones ive read so far lol i think i learned the hard way'
i had been playing for like 2 weeks and kust got my first thorax i was like " cool now im tough " lol not i was barely scratching 1 mill s/p if that and i was still onluy only on basic medium blasters and ****ty drones with no mechanics or anythign realy for that matter most of my skill was in corp management.
buyt any way i had 3-4 members and on day 3 we was war decked by slugstorm corp and they had all been playign about 5 moinths acording to their historys, but any way being ex brit sqauddie andnot afraid of a fight i thought what the hell so i rang in a few favours from other corps and got some help we now had a 7 man fleet against 10 man fleet, doesnt sound to bad does it :)
but
i later found out that my fleet could only attack if they fired the first shots lol which was like "oh ****" so any way their wwe was in dodenvale sitting in the middle of space at some dodgy moon with no idea what we are doing hahah never shot nothing but ratts before and we are their with some other players in battle ships who now i understand where all pretty much noobs lol with about as much pvp experience as i had,
any way we got hammered as you would expect but mostly by concord hhahahaha what was left of us was cleared up by the slugs as we fired the first shots lol and that was how my first pvp experience whent so we was out guynned out manned and matched we had no experience and no allies and only a handfull of noobs
other than that we stood our ground against all eve could throw at us lol in empre we had our wardec and concord to contend with and this is still the same corp :)

Edited by: Adamai on 26/01/2008 17:02:52 just alittle info on the above im now a hell of alot more skilled in combat and have the pvp experience i need to kill my oppenents
my last experience was devastating to my foe with me being fully versed in a mega with almost full mech skills and gunnery for blasters to make the most gun hoe soldier envius and dealling an astonsihing dps of about 950 give or take the odd unit i now make short work of most aggressors although their are still times that the inevitable happens and i get my ass handed to me lol. but now i only pvp in groups much safer and the turn out is far better.
eve is great fun and i would recomend any one to take part in some 0.0 system running and some pvp and gang busting if they can its a good experience and remember dieing is not an option. live to fight another day.
i would like to thank all those players in eve who have killed me and have been killed by me for my lessons in eve for pvp i am most greatfull and it has made me a more cautious pilot and a better diplomat.
fighting and pvp is not the only thig to do in eve some times paying people works too lol

From my first pvp I learned an important lesson:
Don't purposely flip bait cans in high sec and expect there to be only one person baiting. I was in my silly merlin, fitted with crap, and got scrammed and blown up before I could even get a lock. So, enjoying that, I went, bought another cheap merlin, loaded it the same way (geez, I'm a sucker for punishment) but this time was able to at least wound my opponent this time. I tried coming back the third time, but by then the two had moved on.
I loved the experience though. Getting blown up is quite fun. I learned that if I use cheap frigates, I can afford to keep testing different setups and practice. I also learned I should probably use an alt now and use him for my PVP and keep the character I got right now for carebaring, as he doesn't have the right attributes for PVPing and I'm too impatient to grind the skills needs to get the respective attributes up at this point.

lol, i remember i got shaky during a fight. i was thinking "wtf, am i starting to have a seizure from staying up so late and having drank extreme ammounts of cola?" I was piloting a stabber fitted with arti cannons and someone in some ammar cruiser came to the belt. i started orbiting him at 30km and i was actually taking his shields down when i started to shake. then i got to his armor and was doing low ammounts of damage. this went on for about an hour before the guy gave up and left. i went back to killing npc's and sometime later another person came by in a vagabond and insta-killed me.
