An Idea about the local issue...Instead of totally removing local...
How about that when you enter a system you appear in local for X amount of time, then disappear and remain hidden as long as you don't type anything or perform any aggressive actions then the timer starts over. That would mean that you could go "silent" as a manner of speaking. Would give purpose to scanning and finding out if someone is in system.
That would also allow for some new modules and ergo skills to be introduced, that would prolong the time that someone would detect you and such.
This might also add too or create a certain suspense factor.
This is just an idea...what do you say?
"No, I'm not alt.....even if I have been in Pator Tech School for 2 years..." |

To not appear in local or to disappear after a while is a very powerful advantage. My Infiltration post addresses one way of doing it.
How about you flag yourself as anonymous. You become invisible 10 seconds after: Entering a system Saying something in local Being within visible distance of another non-anonymous player (created a role for scouts) Firing your weapons

Thinking about scouts... Scouts would chose not to be seen. So, they chose the anonymous option as well. But anyone they see is uncovered and listed in local.

In combination the non-show in local, and the cloaking device will be a really great addition to the game if implemented together.
Wether based on a standart option or installments is not so important imho. Skills, equipment however it works is fine by me. I believe the idea is taken into consideration allready considering the talks there has been on the subject.
Silent running on cargo ships will also balance things better for traders, but still making it a riscy biz. If these things was set up right, I even believe we could start getting the ad hoc pirate preventions removed. If pirates has to work for their prey, there would be no need to have nerfed gateguns with extreme ranges.
Scouts, Silent runnings, and more active huntings are ammong some of the things I could imagine would be the result of something like this.

If I remeber corectly this sugestion is valid. I remeber reading the theory behind subspace transmisions used in the world of eve. In no way does this in depth tutorial imply a mandatory partisipation in what ever channel what so ever.
Extending these facts it should mean that one should be able to remain out of local channel. What you cant do though is preventing the stargates signaling that some one has jumped in or out.
This would make our scanners much more realistic. "The scanners tells me something is somewhere there, but is it a ship, is it supergrover?" while local does not show it, simply coz the jumped in party dont use the local channel :-)
Dont mean to be rude, but for those that took the time to read the in depth storylines this is in no way an invalid point.

I agree with the idea of making it so that local is a voluntary option. its too easy in combat to look at local and see how many enemy pilots are in system, and then a few quick scans and you have an aproximate report of what they are flying. removing local would make the scouting job much much more necessary and with the interceptors in game, and the coming recon ships, this becomes more and more viable... plus it would help to limit the smack talk from parties involved in a conflict.

Sentry guns are fine at 150km. I still think that migrates more to 0.0 pvp. The other fact that local should not show you if you dont want to be a part of the known system so be it. I would remove the local chat and make it part become a scanner function. If you want to talk then communicate by evemail or conversatiton.
