How do you know what stuff you can do hacking/archaeology on? I just tried exploration for the first time, found a mag (archaeology) site, but couldn't use my analyser on anything. It could be that all the stuff was in the last pocket, I had to warp out in the one before as someone dropped a recon probe and I was in low sec, but I wouldn't know how to recognize the proper targets anyway.

if there were pockets, I don't think it was a magnetometric site. Unless things have changed, profession sites (mag and radar) don't have gates. You probably found an unknown site (can be found using any type of probe). Archeology, salvaging, and hacking cans all look like normal containers on your overview, but whe you try and open them they will say you need special equipment (analyzer or salvager in a mag site and codebreaker in radar).

It was definately a mag site and had at least 4 pockets. Thanks for the info on the cans.

This would be the first I've ever heard of any hacking or arcsal site having a gate. As a general rule, if it has a gate, it's a deadspace complex (which shows up as an 'Unknown' when scanning for Cosmic Signatures on a multspectral probe).
What I'm guess is you were in a system with an Unknown and a Magnetometric hit on a multispec, and the first site you happened to scan down was the Unknown. ---

Special radar and magnetometric sites dropping booster production items have gates. Doubt you find them outside regions where gas constellations are.

FFS, it wasn't a radar site.
What you've found is an UNKNOWN signature - more precisely an escalation site of four levels, which has NO cans, NOTHING to do with arcsal, but which may or may not end up with some officer goodness or deadspace lootski off one of the structures, or maybe a bookmark to another site (hence the 'escalation' part).
I wanna bet you my left nut that there was an UNKNOWN sig as well as a RADAR, when you did your first scan with the multispec. You found the UNKNOWN instead of the RADAR.
Go back and try again.

you can find sites with mag scan probes, even if the site is of a different kind. a mag probe can find a easy grav/radar/etc site easier than a very hard mag site....

Ok people, calm down a little bit. But some of you are in fact misinformed. Just because you have never found a Hacking/Archeology site with gates, does not mean they do not exist. Now while I have never seen an archeology site with gates before I have been in a hacking site with gates. This was confirmed with the fact that it required hacking to activate the second gate and it had hacking cans after that. If needing the hacking skill to activate a gate, and having hacking cans after said gate do not make it a hacking site.... then I apologize. How ever, My understanding would be those two things being present would be the pure deffinition of a hacking site.

Just to state for people that dont know. There are "Radar" and "Mag" sites which have acceleration gates. These are not unknowns.
These are only found in Gas regions - and drop Gas related items (in 0.0 that I know of - I dont know about the new loc-sec ones).
However usually most people that post about times they found a gate when scanning for a radar, usually have found an unknown, and are not in a gas constellation.
Which one it is here for the OP - I dont know (as I dont know if the Gas low sec systems produce these special radar/mag sites as 0.0 does).

If you're not sure what type of site it is you should be able to tell by the name of the site in the system map.

What are these sites called on the system map? * * * In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Low sec Ladar gas regions were in that blog by Greyscale. They are as follows:
The Forge - Mivora Lonetrek - Umamon Placid - Amevync Solitude - Elerelle Aridia - Fabai Derelik - Joas Heimatar - Hed Molden Heath - Tartaven
I came across a site in Molden Heath just the other day that Multispec-ed as holding Ladar and Radar, and I wasted a good 3 hours trying to scan down the Radar site. Guess I might have to come back with some Ladar probes to see if its still there.

Cant remember at the moment - but you'll know the site when you get to it. It starts off as an accerlation gate - and when you warp in there are some easy guys. Then there are TWO gates to choose from, each leading to a different room - but each person who wants to progress to the other rooms needs Hacking - which stuff me up a bit, as my alt is the explorer with exploration (and no PvE skills), while my main flys the Battleship, with no Hacking!
Had to get some alliance members to come and help clear the site. Two battleships was more than enough.
