Well I finally made some time to check out the new patch and not too happy. Every time I launch my drones, BAM instant aggro. What the hell is going on? Not too happy about tech II drones going up in smoke every time they leave the drone bay.

Some missions are known to unaggress you and aggress your drones.
Other missions are fine (still).
You'll just have to be more careful. Also, consider sentry drones.
In answer: no, they're not useless... just expensive. ;-)

from what i have seen so far drones have been given some much needed tweaks.
my drones have been sticking together as one group instead of headin off on their own personal vendettas against the 5 biggest rats in the mission and they head back to ship faster

Try the following:
- Bring Drone Durability to Level 4 - Bring Drone Navigation to Level 4
Your drones will be tougher and get to and from the target faster, so you can get them out of harm's way with minimal risk of destruction.
You might also want to try keeping an eye on your drones... if the hit points are dropping, pull it back into your bay to break the agro. You won't auto-charge your shields anymore, but that doesn't matter, you're just trying to shed aggro.
Further to that, don't drop your drones out of your bay the second you see baddies. Wait until all the baddies in your general area have aggro'd you... then drop your drones out of your bay to say hello. For the most part, the baddies are going to be too preoccupied with your much sexier ship (thanks to the expansion) to worry about your drones peeling their armor plating off like the wrapping on a particularly delicious chocolate. I haven't noticed any change in difficulty of using drones... if anything, you'll sometimes just need to watch them a little more. It also helps to try and keep control of what you're aggroing. Remember to never attract more NPC's than you can keep track of (obviously a few missions, like Blockades, are the exception to that idea).

When released, you have five ships fighting for you. Each ship has a number of guns firing. So if each ship has two guns, then you have ten guns firing at the ship.
As you get higher in the Drones say to T2 the damage gets even more. I bring out my Gardes at say 28km range and my Wardens at say 45km to 90km range. When the hotties get close, 15km or so I greet them with my "Little Friends". Oh, and if new baddies appear on the horizon, I scoop my Little Friends in my big fat Domi to protect them and release them again to fight. I always have one eye on the damage screen for my Drones, one eye on the damage for my ship, one eye on my powergrid and one eye open for Concord. lol. I do all lvl 4's Solo....with "My Little Friends"

You just have to be careful with your drones. Do not deploy drones until you have full aggro from a group. Watch carefully to make sure they are not aggrod anyways (weapon trails going from an un-aggrod group towards your drones are a dead give-away, as are drone health drops). Some enemies may drop aggro and re-aggro your drones if you stay too far away. Take note of missions which are really hard on your drones. Consider kiting groups out 50-100km before deploying drones if other groups tend to aggro your drones (on missions where you can pull one group at a time).
