I just can't enjoy a show where the people are very "big-headed" if you get what I mean. For this reason I can't watch 90% of anything shown on television, it makes me cringe.

"Can we go back to the part where Jayne was knocked out by a 90 pound girl? 'Cause I don't think that will ever get old!"
1. Firefly 2. BSG (not really surprising since the same gfx company did both - you can even see Serenity in the BSG pilot) 3. Farscape 4. Stargate SG1 5. 6. 7. 8. Stargate Atlantis
It just goes to show you that you shouldn't kneel down in front of the third rail, grab it with both hands, and **** on it from three feet away. |

Edited by: SoftRevolution on 17/12/2007 18:04:38 The basic problem with Stargate is there's just too much of it.
I loved that show for a season or three. It used to be part of our Sunday morning ritual in my house. Tea, toast and stargate. But eventually it just felt a bit played out. I don't think it's fair to judge it next to shows with shorter runs because all TV starts to look a bit wibbly after four seasons or so. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

OK, I learned that Jewel Saite (Kaylee) will be joining the crew of Stargate Atlantis, so it just made #6 on the list now, instead of #8.
I agree with the idea that there was too much StarGate. I ended up reading through all the episodes on wikipedia, making a list of which ones sounded interesting, and going abck and watching just those ones. Serenity was nothing more than a Eulogy for the show itself. It was actually quite contradictory in terms of canon, had too much dumbing down for those who hadn't seen the series (understandable, but still disappointing), wasn't long enough for the number of characters they had to go through (shepherd got what, 30s of screen time before getting killed off?), and they needlessly killed off lots of characters. This is in addition to its universe-scaling problems (everything's right next to eachother!), and random character de-advancement (simon and mal at eachothers throats for no reason)...

I'll take Star Trek: NG anyday of the week over any of those neo-drama-sci-fi shows, ie: Firefly, BSG.

Gotta try to fit alot in within 2 hours and the story as a whole is really based around River and Simon. This finished up that story. Shepard Book was more or less a subcharacter throughout the series, they never even got close to telling about his character (and I love how we will never know about him).

Did you actually want to watch them fly or something? And if everything was so close then we wouldn't of had 'out of gas'.
Originally by: MalVortex and random character de-advancement (simon and mal at eachothers throats for no reason)...
No reason? Simon is pulling every resource he can to keep River safe, that was his only goal in life. Then Mal takes her on a job and they get into a firefight with reavers and barely escape. I'd say that was reason enough to punch Mal.
Those two are opposites in every aspect and the only thing they share in common is their hate for the system. ___________________________

In the movie everything was right next to eachother. Everything. That planet with the job? Oh, its right here. The shepherds retreat? Oh, its just over here. A missing planet full of reavers? Just down the street. A giant gas cloud with advanced communication interception equipment? The reavers back yard.
And Mal and Simon had reached at least a bit of a truce by the time the series ended. While River on the mission was unnecessarily dangerous, and the hit was warranted, they acted like quite a bit of the patchwork had never been done.

stop *****ing about stuff u have no clue about, little noob. what did u want, a 5h. movie watching them flying with the autopilot on?
look at SW:EP3... now they are in coruscant, now they are in naboo, now they are on coruscant again and now suddenly 9 month have passed and padme has a big belly and now they are on the wookie planet and now they are on the lava planet (dunno name) and bla bla bla. i got ******* dizzy in that movie. they were bending space&time like they never did before. (apart the fact the more recent trilogy sucked as a whole anyways)

Firefly was just about the best ever goram tv show ever made in the whole of the verse. It had intelligent, well written episodes that made you care about the characters. It had offbeat humour that no other sci-fi show has come close too, and the acting was top notch from episode one. Serenity tied up one plot thread nicely thank you, and as a movie was brilliant. As for the instant getting from one place to another, like other posters have said, this has too happen otherwise you would be left with a ton of boring exposistion. Right getting on to other points, stop banging Stargate it is a whole bunch of fun, with some great characters in it, and is just as mindless as star trek was, there should and always will be room for sci-fi like that. As for BSG, i forget who posted it, but whoever said it is a soap opera in space is correct. I have got two seasons on dvd too watch whilst i was injured and laid up in bed not being able to move correctly and found it enjoyable, but it left me a bit hollow, everything is too pointless in it, i much prefered the original BSG. What show everyone seems to be forgetting is the one that sparked off the new wave of sci-fi. The show that said there is life outside of Star Trek, and that is Babylon 5, with it's intelligant "Arc" which was UNHEARD of in TV before (except Blakes 7 which the creator JMS has stated as the inspiration for b5).
For me any top ten of Sci-Fi TV shows should look like this.
1. Firefly 2. Babylon 5 3. Doctor Who (Original) 4. Star Trek TOS 5. Stargate SG-1 6. Battlestar Galactica (Original) 7. Blakes 7 8. Doctor Who (New) 9. Red Dwarf 10.The Invaders

I liked Babylon 5 because the ships weren't always right side up. That's one thing that has ALWAYS driven me crazy about star treks.

Amen! Kirk himself said it in ST2: Wrath of Kahn; "He's not thinking three dimensionally!" And neither are Star Trek producers. Or BSG producers (unless it's the Viper scenes) Or Firefly Or Stargate (the worst offender IMO, I mean what if the gate on the other end was upside down, they are round afterall) Or Eve Online for that matter. I'd love to be able to free-pilot my interceptor sometime and flip it upside down to all the other ships. It just goes to show you that you shouldn't kneel down in front of the third rail, grab it with both hands, and **** on it from three feet away. |
