New forum, new thread. Picking up from where the previous one left off.
---
What is the EVE Influence Map?
The purpose of the EVE Influence Map was to create an objective, unbiased political map of EVE. A map that is not based on someoneGÇÖs thoughts and opinions, but rather only on public facts such as which alliance has sovereignty over any given solar system.
So how does it work? Each claimed solar system emits influence into space. Claimed systems with outposts emit 6 times more influence than a regular system. Furthermore systems with greater sovereignty levels (i.e strategic index) emit yet more influence.
Moreover, influence also spreads through stargates into adjacent systems. Influence may spread for up to 4 jumps in this manner, with each successive system receiving 30% of the influence of the former system. All systems that receive influence in this manner will also emit it into space as per the previous rules.
As you'd expect, influence rapidly falls off the farther away you get from an influence source. Specifically the influence falloff for any given pixel is proportional to the square of the distance from the emitting system.
Finally, for every pixel on the map the total influence of every alliance is calculated, and the pixel is awarded to alliance with the most influence.
On a side note, the systems claimed by NPCs (Venal, Outer Ring, etc) also emit a little GÇ£empireGÇ¥ influence so the alliances canGÇÖt outright claim their territory. Alliance influence can still encroach however due to the nature of influence falloff.
On the back-end the map is fully generated by a collection of C++ tools to pre-process the API data, followed by a Java program to actually calculate influence and draw the map. There is no human influence on the map beyond color selection, as colors need to be chosen for visibility purposes. Finally, please note that some space-holding alliances wonGÇÖt appear on the map with an influence blob, as their influence is too low to overwhelm their bigger neighbors.
How is the EVE Influence Map weighted?
Every star system with sovereignty is assigned an influence level based on the strategic level (how many days it has been held). Unclaimed systems do not exert influence, while NPC systems exert a mild influence to give them a suitable border with player-run 0.0.
The full point system, for those of you curious:
Sov 0: 5 points Sov 1: 10 points Sov 2: 11 points Sov 3: 12 points Sov 4: 14 points Sov 5: 16 points
Stations have a 6x multiplier, so 30/60/66/72/84/96 points respectively.
Source Code
The code for the map and its associated tools is under a BSD license. You can find a copy of the code, the database, some minimal documentation, and the associated tools here.
Where to get the map
The latest version of the map is always available here: http://dl.eve-files.com/media/corp/Verite/influence.png
Archive of previous maps: Map archive
The map is updated every day at around 16:00 EVE Time.
Frequently asked questions
Finally, please read the following before posting a reply. A couple questions tend to be frequently asked:
- This is not a war map. It'll not display any conflicts or ship losses.
- This is not a power bloc map. It's colored for visibility, not for the relationship between various groups.
- This is not an exact political map. Some systems and even outposts claimed by one alliance may appear in the influence blob another alliance if those systems are dominated by another alliance's influence.
- The map is primarily colored for visibility. I will consider requests from alliance diplomats for another color, but visibility will be the deciding factor

Question & Sniper:
Why is Curse colored as if it's owned by RA, and not uncolored like GW, Venal, Stain, etc.?
(Nothing against RA really, just wondering about the technicalities of the algorithm assigning the NPC region to RA.) {{ Inject code here }} |

(Nothing against RA really, just wondering about the technicalities of the algorithm assigning the NPC region to RA.) Answer: it's not intentional. Every NPC region is configured to emit a suitable amount of influence, including Curse. The problem is that RA has so much influence (and their regions are so close) that they completely clobber the NPC influence. NPC influence was never meant to be tweaked by hand, so this isn't something that can easily be compensated for. |

Oh, ok, thank you for your quick and clear answer.
So, RA "color weight" is just overwhelming, compared to Angel Cartel's one, in the coloring algorithm. Got it.
Well, I heard about russian drone power block ability to blob everything, but outblobbing an NPC faction is just impressive! :) {{ Inject code here }} |

this thread needs a sticky, seeing as it provides an interesting metric of alliance influence, and gives an easy to comprehend colourshow for the internets at large :) |
