Recently in my corpchat a fellow corpmate has made the ridiculous claim that Deus Ex is only 75% as good as Half-life is. I believe Deus Ex to be better than Half-Life around the 120% range if not more, although Half-Life is still one of the best games ever made.
So basically I ask you OOPE, who is right? Which game do you prefer?

That is a tough call but if we factor in the impact the sequel(s) had then Half Life wins. __________________________________

Half life, because of its ability to make you actually give a damn about its characters.
Deux Ex didnt feel that way for me. ---

I'm curious, what "characters" were there to give a damn about in Half life 1?

There is a half-life 2, you know. Half life 1 was mostly a linear shooter. A very, very good linear shooter, but IMO hl2 blows it out of the water. ---

I know, but this thread is only about half life 1 and deus ex as standalone, it wouldn't be fair to compare the two series after the abortion that was deus ex 2.

Quite frankly I still enjoyed hl1 more than Deus Ex, but I'm not into the whole roleplay thing. ---

Deux Ex (and system shock 2 for that matter) is a much better game, not matched even by any games of the last few years. Even Bioshock was a poor attempt, no where near the options or depth.
HL is a excellent series with some top storytelling however.

Deus Ex had some good parts, I liked the way I got odd comments after the mission when I disturbed ladies in the toilet Stuff like that are just nice touches in a game.
However, I didn't come close to finishing DE, and I've played HL through a few times, and all the sequels/expansions.
I'd say that while DE had some really nice touches, it just wasn't as fun/interesting/entertaining as HL. - Sig follows:

half life is more like a platform for multiplayer gaming and other games, Deus Ex is more like a singleplayer, of course it will have a better storyline, comparing these is like comparing a war book with a scenario airsoft game.

so you say natural selection is a quake engine based game? it's true half-life's engine is based on quake engine, but it was changed a lot. No matter what, since natural selection wouldn't be made without half-life, i like half life more than any other game:b i wish they could stop that cheaters so i could play even more ns though v.v

Sven Coop was just a mod for hldm to allow two or more players to run through the game. Then they added new maps and such. It wasn't a continuation of the story.
And no matter how modified an engine is, the engine is still what it was originally.
Gears of War was made in the UT3 engine, even though it was heavily modified. Loads of games have been made using a heavily modified UT2 engine. Dark Messiah was made in a heavily modified Source engine.
No matter how much you modify an engine, it won't change from one engine to another. It is still the same base engine. ---

GoW and DM used licensed engines. They just dropped new content into an existing bit of software.
Half-Life on the other hand was heavily rewritten and as of the games release had "portions" of Quake code in. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

half-life for me. simply because i liked it better, and i wanted to complete it. that and enemys throwing hand grenades over box'es i was covering behind. and half-life came out of the blue, it wasnt like someone had raved about for years before it came out.
ive heard the arguments, seen other people play deus ex, and ive gone back home. reinstalled it. and after 20mins im bored. actually im annoyed that i can see the enemy, he's right there in front of me. and i cant hit him. for a special agent, the dude you are seems abit too much short bus special.

half life 2! valve rock, the game is great, the graphics were top notch and still are aswell as being lag free on a totaly **** PC. while the episodes are just more of the same stuff, who cares if the "stuff" is awsome. Bring on episode 3: revenge of the combine. HL1 was good also, as it was the game that got me into FPS.
Deus Ex seemed pretty average to me....

I seem to have this innate ability to kill threads. It's quite fascinating. Whenever I comment somewhere, it must be such a perfect comment that no one can think of anything else that could be said. "Oh, Drewski commented here already? Well, he wrapped it up nicely, nothing more needs to be said now!"
Yeah, that's it.
