Please.. NEVER say space opera, it only reminds me of that bastardous religion. Maybe space themed drama in pleasing baritone is a better phrase...

space opera David Brin's Uplift series, start with Startide Rising, not Sundiver as Sundiver while good background is not as great as the rest.
Iain M. Banks, the culture series.
Peter F. Hamilton, Nights Dawn Trilogy.
Cyberpunk William Gibson, neuromancer and the virtual light series.
Niel Stevenson, Snow Crash.
Vurt by Jeff Noon, a modern PKD, so surrealism mixed with cyberpunk.
Charlles Stross, Accelarando, heads more towards transhumanism than cyberpunk but starts there.
Perdido Street Station: Books: China Mieville, more steampunk but has that distopic feel.

Both awesome, but the Night's Dawn Trilogy is probably one of the best scifi books I've ever read. _______________

I'd agree. I just finished reading the 6th book of the Horus Heresy saga, Descent of Angels, and they've all been pretty nice so far. No SciFi can get anymore epic imo. Can't wait for April 2008 when the next one (Legion: Brother against Brother) is supposedly out. __________

It wasn't worth admitting that you read them to state that. |

There are already very good recommendations on this thread - I will add that any book by Neal Stephenson is an excellent choice, though only "Snowcrash" and "The Diamond Age" could be considered true sci-fi. The former follows the cyberpunk themes on Gibson's "Neuromancer", while the latter explores what the future would be like with nano-technology having become pervasive.
Phillip K. **** is another sci-fi author I heartly recommend, though he is somewhat offbeat and not to everyone's tastes. Start with "Ubik" for instance, if you are not familiar with him.
Rudy Rucker's trilogy of "Software", "Wetware" and "Freeware" is another favourite of mine, in the cyberpunk tradition.
Dan Simmon's "Hyperion" series was also very enjoyable and hard to put down (though it gets a bit too cheesy and melodramatic at times for my taste).
Finally, if you want to blow your mind check out "The Illuminatus! Trilogy", by Robert Anton Wilson and Robert Shea - not exactly sci-fi in the traditional sense, but a very recommendable read.

While you're entitled to your opinion ofc and I don't feel like arguing your point, let me just say the W40k background is the only science fiction setting that interests me in the slightest. Since the OP didn't ask for opinions on books about WW2 and the politics back then (while at it, I'd recommend Michael Burleigh), I had to go with W40k ^^ __________

Ender's Game. It's all you'll ever need... 'cause you'll read it multiple times. :)
But just in case, there's also Starship Troopers. (Do NOT base your decision on the movie... the book is 1000 times better.) _______________________________________________________

I suggest Art of Computer Programming, vol.1 - vol.3 by Donald Knuth.
That's some truly /epic/ scifi!

If you do Warhammer 40k start with the Gaunts ghosts novels, Ragnar series, or the Eisenhorn trilogy. The endings aren't always happy, it can be gritty, and main characters die. WH40k has some good stuff and some garbage at the same time. Stay away from the commisar Cain stuff.
If you like technical aspects of war, Star Wars: Republic commando is pretty good minus the mushy jedi part. The full star wars series is also full of some good but alot of really badly written stuff. You have to be selective.
As someone mentioned, the Legion series is pretty good too. The good guys actually have to work to win. Not for kids though, LOTS of sex in there although no real details are given =(
If you're a marine afficionado you can try the Starfist series but even for a military buff its atrocious as the chest beating "I R uber mahween!" filled in where reality should have been added.
Snow Crash has some good stuff but threw in an Eskimo to make it even weirder and a little pedo for the pervs.
Stay away from the Enders series. The emo will bore you to death unless you're the kind that likes stories about emo kids who are geniuses but not paid enough attention. Lots of emo but the sci-fi aspect is skimmed over alot.
