It was once mentioned they were considering a lightweight client that could just be used for intra station interractions though (chatting, manipulating contracts and market orders, EVEMail and skill training).
1b. Quite right. This will add a few points to your attributes, which increases skill training, and level 4 is still reasonably fast to learn for rank 1 and 2 skills.
2. Although tactically you are close, there is more to it. There is electronic warfare, the range at which you engage, manouvering to be either hard to hit or hit hard yourself, tackling, cloaking and a few more intricacies that come into play in the actual engagement, but in the end it is just playing out your ship and modules against those of the enemy.
Then there is the strategic side of it all. You will find that in most cases combat occurs against two grossly mismatched opponents, simply because a lot of effort is spent by players to force encounters where their ship and fittings are sure to win, while doing all they can to avoid encounters where the advantage is not so obvious, or is clearly not in their favor. Think of your ship and its current fitting as the deck you take to a trading card game. Some decks will flat out beat you, some you will beat. Only in EVE you have some control over finding out what deck the opponent has and who (and therefore which decks) you choose to do battle with.
3. Salvaging itself is pretty light on skills. Surveying is mandatory, and training salvaging up to 4 or 5 is useful as it shortens the time you'll spend on a wreck. After that, it's all in the fittings to get your salvagers in ranger faster. This means training science, the prerequisite for tractor beams, and flying a salvage boat that sports 8 high slots (both the salvager and the tractor beam are high slot items). Destroyers are a good choice as they combine 8 high slots with good speed and agility so you'll get the wrecks into tractor range faster. Later on you might want to specialize into interdictors which are about twice as fast as regular destroyers. If you want to min/max the salvage ship, do this with a Gallente destroyer (Catalyst/Eris) because it has more low slots, allowing you to fit more cargo expanders (especially higher level missions will fill up your cargo hold FAST!).
If you are just going to salvage your own missions, you could also consider a Marauder as these get a bonus to tractor range and have a good cargo hold. These are however battleships and therefore due to their speed better as on the fly salvagers than dedicated salvage boats.
EDIT: 4. As soon as you got cash enough to replace your clone and the frigate you fly, and you got yourself a frigate fitted out with something that doesn't rely on civilian or basic modules.
