I will confess to being a fan of the popular anime Naruto (The Japanese version, not the dubbed/butchered version you pansies), and I just watch a pretty damn good episode of it. Thus I feel compelled to post about it here.
Damn this show rocks. 
OH! To make responding easier, I've created a number of prefabricated responses you can use when replying to this thread. The response format is as follows:

1. Anime is for losers.

I will reserve judgement - having seen some of Naruto the Abridged series (everyone shoudl watch Yu-Gi-Oh the Abridged series btw), but the word filler is brought to mind when someone mentions Naruto to me.
That said, some of us do indeed have strange tastes in Anime, my freind thinks I'm a freak for finding Elfen Lied awesome for instance.
He watches Echi.

Long story short...to make sure the Anime didn't catch up to the Manga we had to sit through a year of fillers. It made Baby Jesus cry.

Anyways back on topic, dattebayo. Think i got sick of the filler around ep 190 and refused to watch anymore, dattebayo. recently started watching shippuden but its going very slooooow, dattebayo. I prefer bleach tho or One piece, dattebayo!

English, French, and Japanese and it's bad in any of them. Things like Naruto are a symbol of the downward spiral that's effecting Anime imo.
Occasionally they release a good anime, like 12 Kingdoms, RahXephon, Monster, etc. But for the most part it's these DBZ-style derivatives that are getting popular acclaim and it's ruining the market imo. Japan's going all Hollywood on us, by cranking out this uninspired dribble.
I mean I watched DBZ, was fun to watch, but I'd hardly call it good, but it was entertaining. I understand, not everything needs to be a work of art. But Things like FMA, and Naruto are just utterly bad, and the acclaim they garner is worse. I even liked Getbackers, so it's not like I'm just some stuckup art snob. But Getbackers had a similar vein of "Tacky Japanese Humor" but imo it was done effectively and captured the energy and excitement that DBZ had to it.
It's a pity, because there are elements of Naruto that aren't bad. The fight scenes are well choreographed, and parts of the story are compelling, but from an execution standpoint the anime is horrible. Flashbacks, of Flashbacks, I think one time they had a Flashback within a Flashback. Time spent uselessly literally accomplishing nothing, not to mention tons of filler episodes.
I mean I like watching Naruto FMVs since some of the action sequences are done quite nicely if you cut out the stupid dialog in them, and shots of people trying to explain what the others are doing. Like Rock vs. Gaara, Naruto vs. Sasuke. etc.
Gaara + Seizure of Power
After something like that you see how actually watching Naruto is such a let down.

If you want the real meaning of cliffhangers, Sunrise are the lords of this.
I know I am sounding like a broken record now, but the cliffhangers in Geass are infamous on the net, point in context the phrase "oh Geass no!" in blogs when talking about a cliffhanger

I like the naruto manga, got bored of the anime around episode 70ish? Then enjoyed the last two or three eps before the filler (the final fight bits) and havn't bothered with shippuden since I read the manga so recently. Also, I agree with the people who say that popular shounen series (bleach, naruto etc.) are a downward spiral for anime. If they'd make more stuff like GITS and Bebop, i.e. slightly more serious series, I would become moderately less grumpy.
anyway in conclusion....BELIEVE IT!

The action lacked more action to be honest.
And I especially mean action of the quality like the 10 vs 100 puppet fight.

Also, my opinion.
I'd prefer it if they'd keep up the pace as in the manga,like they did in the episodes before the fillers.
And if they fear catching up with the manga so much, they might as well do a proper story arc like bleach had with those Bounto.

Then I watched Ninja Scroll and found out what real anime was. And I like it.

It's a pity, because there are elements of Naruto that aren't bad. The fight scenes are well choreographed, and parts of the story are compelling, but from an execution standpoint the anime is horrible. Flashbacks, of Flashbacks, I think one time they had a Flashback within a Flashback. Time spent uselessly literally accomplishing nothing, not to mention tons of filler episodes.
I mean I like watching Naruto FMVs since some of the action sequences are done quite nicely if you cut out the stupid dialog in them, and shots of people trying to explain what the others are doing. Like Rock vs. Gaara, Naruto vs. Sasuke. etc.

After something like that you see how actually watching Naruto is such a let down.

it also makes you wonder why they didn't finished 12 Kingdoms.

I've seen every episode up through Shippuden.... 32ish? The one where Garra is finally saved (I'll leave it at that for spoilers sake). I tend to watch in bursts, it can drive me crazy having a cliffhanger and a week to see it =D
And yea, it is somewhat DBZish. But the charachters are all really well done, its got good production values (100+ fillers aside), and like a soap, theres a point where you get sucked in...

I watched StarBlazers as a very young tyke. I liked that, even if looking back upon the series it was very poor, and more poorly translated and translocated.
However, since then, in my most humble, uncultured, unexperienced opinion, the only anime of note has been Samurai Champloo. Chanporu. Whatever.
Wait. The Akira movie was good. Though it was mostly just eye-candy to the english speaker who was unfamiliar with the storyline. But hey, it was good eye-candy for the day.
But Samurai Champloo. That was delicious to me because of the "historical fiction" aspect. I always came away from an episode feeling that, if I hadn't actually learned something true about historical Japanese culture, at least I had gotten a taste of some pop interpretation.
I've tried Naruto. I've tried Inuyashas, which came with many many recommendations. Can't stomach. Does Crumplecorn's watering can girl offer anything like what I enjoyed about Samurai Champloo? Does anything?

Last episode made me sad...a full hour special of nothing but Naruto and Orochimaru staring each other down.
2nd episode this season I've actually had to fast forward through (the other one being "the return of the kazekage," which I take it was just an enormous parade.)
I suppose taking a single frame of the manga and making it into an hour long special is bad, but I would argue that filler arcs with made up villaiges and princesses and such is worse. |

The manga isnt that bad, story progresses nicely and people are actually dying.
It might not be the most intelligent stuff out there but it's nowhere near as bad as pokemon.
I do feel that the Naruto story is actually going somewhere but the pace is laughable if you compare it to OVA's. Wich is a format you seem to like.
The only thing I fear is if they get to that point where they finish the story arc, they start going DBZ.
In conclusion, Naruto does have a set beginning and the story so far leads to believe that there will be an end. So that kinda kills the point you make.

For those that dont know the plotline goes like this.
Have some family scenes with the hero and family, Then evil bad alien/deamon/dragon etc shows up. OMG he is SO insanely POWERFULLL!!!!!!! [says the hero]. Hero gets his ass kicked then its reveiled the hero was faking it ZOMG!!!!.
Bad guy gets killed/redeemed and everyone live happily ever after till next day when next badguy appears.
What always got me was how every insany impossable powerfull evil guy is superseeded by one even more powerfull i mean come on there has to be a limit.

I tried to watch Naruto (and Bleach, which I also read a lot of the managa of) but as with all these series it just gets annoying after a while. The episodes are so drawn out, they take forever to do nothing. Quite frankly, after 200 episodes of that you just decide you've had enough. Not to mention every now and again it looks like they got a bunch of 5 year olds to animate it.

Thank god...I'm not sure how I'd handle anime on an entirely different scale of horrible. Thankfully I receive the vast majority of my anime recommendations via the internet or word of mouth.

DBZ was actually heavily edited for the US. It was a good funny adult story with fantastic character progression in its original form.

yep.. waiting for episode 42 of shippuuden atm..
didnt mean to get hooked, was just bored and watched the first ep. ... ehhrrrmm, some odd 300 episodes later, i can certainly say i enjoy watching naruto
oh, started on Bleach last week.. up to about ep. 110 or so now.
they both have their strong points, where one fails, the other succeeds imho.

I watch naruto (& bleach) when it comes out with fansubs. the english dub is horrifically annoying.
why? cos it's better than saturday night TV. gives me 30mins entertainment a week.
I do however, absolutely loathe how dragged out both naruto and bleach are. 40-41 special that last aired, was 40mins of stand off for gods sake

Fansubs are almost allways better and anime is refreshing form the repeated shows we have here
