Alright, so I know that pretty much all ships have a use in the game, and that there isn't just one all powerful ship. However, I'm curious what people think are good pirate ships. I don't exactly feel like spending a month training for a certain ship, only to find out it isn't nearly as useful as I'd expected it to be.
Anyway, I mainly like soloing (no, that's a lie, if I could find people to go out pirating with, I would, but if I ever get to that point I'd probably just train for whatever ship they thought would be most useful). So, any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

depend what kind of pirating you want, and what is your obiective.
I like drake (can easily tank sentry guns), rapier (love that ship) and hacs (sac, vaga, cerberus, isthar). Minmatar command ships are sweet too.

when i think of pirate, the first ships that come to mind are minmatar. maybe its just the cosmetics of the ship.
i used to pirate and the vagabond is an amazing ship for the job. as far as hunting in belts. its swift, can take some punishment, dish out some pwnage out of webrange, and if worst comes, you can MWD and haul ass away from the reinforcements.
despite what you may see about the vaga its still a great ship and does its job. ive killed multiple ravens while i was solo.
if your more into gate camps, which are usually gangs anyways, you can pull it off w/ a hurricane, which does nice damage, and is able to tackle while taking some sentry fire. otherwise your gonna want a tempest. strong tanks and lots of gank.
as far as im concerned, minmatar = pirate race.
gallente does well too as it can just go nose to nose with anything and ruin their day. megathrons pwn at gates as they have AWESOME tanks.

As a pirate ship you will have to find a ship that have a few qualities:
Tackle
Dps
Defence
*able to tackle an enemy (scrambler, maybe web and maybe mwd to get in range)
*able to knock out the defence of your target - faster is better
*able to defend yourself against your target, other pirates etc - defence might not necesaryly mean your tank, but any means to escape things you can't handle (speed, tank, EW or ECM or good timing )
Most people prefer gallente or minmatar - because they are good for speed and damage - and their slots often make it easy to tank well (armor tank), while tackling fine...
But that doesn't mean you can't find good ships around - just be creative... It does depend on your playstyle and how you select targets to decide the ship of your choice.

Im a fan of the cyclone, good tank decently agile and well it does have below average dps but its a good all rounder. the typhoon is also the pwn.

Minmatar are nice for solo - try Stabber fit for speed, I've killed a few cruisers with it. Not enough DPS for a BS solo tho. And if you don't like it, all secondary gunnery skills will help to train for a Gallente blaster boat, which would be a second choice.

Curse is an awesome ship for it, just has issues around sentries cause of the drones. Rapier is even better from what I've seen, don't fly Minnie personally. Nano/tanked Sac, Ishtar, Vega are all solid choices.
Tbh, even with t1 ships there a load of possibilities, the only limiting factor between em all is the range of targets you can engage and where you can engage them at.

survivability, tackling, and easy to replace are some of the key factors i look for.
now the vaga, thats a different story, the damn things almost never die compared to what you can kill with it (good pilot of course)
Rupture- is also a good inexpensive yet powerful ship, ive actually been able to tank sentries for a decent amount of time in one. good drone bay and slot layout.
Thorax- works really really well, even just plain jane unnamed blasters with a set of medium drones the thorax can wtfpwn almost any other cruiser and has a good chance against any battlecruiser.
Maller- freaking amazing tanker, i like to use them with projectile guns a lot.
personally i dont like using battle cruisers.. either stay agile w/ cruisers or go balls to the wall with a battleship. personally i fried a cyclone and arbitrator in a proj fitted maller before.
so, look into those cruisers id say.

Depends on what the size of your prey is but some good ships would be....
Vexor, Thorax, Maller...
Myrm 'n Cane...
Crow 'n Crusader...
Abaddon, Mega, Domi, Phoon, Scorp (wtf I know but if you know how to it's a great ship post trinity) and Raven.
Vaga, Ishtar, Sac....
.... And lots 'n lots more!

I've been having fun with the hvy dictors can tank sentries and will stop those pesky transport ships or stabbed ships
Awesome tank and reasonable DPS if soloing pick your targets and use an alt to scout if possible
