Thanks for giving us the great graphics update. But when are the sound effects of eve be given some attention? It's so terrible! Ok... I'm sure some of you will say "oooh I like the sound in eve... there is nothing wrong with that" but polease! at least the missile launch and explosion sounds they suck big time! I can't abide to hear tremendous explosion sounds for light missiles that don't do me any damage.
I have an idea! You (eve team) don't need to spend a dozen man-years to do anything about it (please don't let me wait another whole year for that). I just ask you to make that moddable! This will not hurt playability and will not give any advantage (other than purely psichological) to any player who decide to do it.
Please please! Make the sound modable!!!
Thanks

I'd prefer them adding scaling ability of the UI or at least certain parts of it, and the abillity to move the ship readout etc. Also to bring back the older ship readout and target signs, and make targets movable on their own, not all at once.

It does suck pretty bad.

For all those that don't have sound on, would you enable it if the sounds were better?
I'm not a big fan of some of the more obnoxious sounds, but I do enjoy what little good there is. I was really hoping they'd stick some new sounds in with Trinity though. They're definitely way below the graphics quality.

IF EVE had sound, which it doesnt (10th!) and it was good, then yes most of the time i would have it on.

No we won't get it moddable. That will open up too many dark sticky black holes of doom.
Just fix it so we hear sounds when we should hear sounds, and don't hear sounds when we shouldn't. Then we might not have to listen to so many leet snobs saying "EVE has sound?" If the sound is sensible, maybe so many people wouldn't turn it off. Sound should be an additional source of information, not just poorly executed ear-candy. ----- TANSTAAFL

I really don't see any hole of doom at all.
It's as simple as looking for a sound file in the disk before it plays the vanilla one. It does not have to give players the chance to edit the files. And being so specific to sound it does not touch in any way the logic of the game.
That simple.

They are making it clear that Eve lacks a very essential thing. Sound effects. I don't say music because we can just play an mp3 in background and that is it. People play without sound off because it sucks not because they are proud of it.

No, no, they're just letting us know they're so hardcore that a few extra fps means more to them than a little bit of extra immersion :)
For me, sound is a big part of a game. I couldn't play a game without sound, even for extra fps, and if the sounds don't pass a certain bar of professionalism, I can't play the game either. I wouldn't say the sound is all that bad in EVE, it's about average for a game of this type I'd say, there's just not enough of it, not quite enough variety (sort of the space game equivalent of having the same two footsteps in an fps, not enough variation). Some sounds are actually pretty good. The jumpgate sound, although for some reason permanently fixed at ear-bleeding volume, is actually quite a jump-gatey sound to my ears and mind.
The music's also quite good, in a retro (I'm guessing a tribute to 70s "progressive") synth music sort of way; although (again) there isn't really enough of it, not enough variety.

Nah, were just saying that for some reason EVE doesn't need sound. I've had it off for most of my years playing too although that was because the engine was so pathetic it really did kill your FPS. Now the sound doesn't kill the FPS on my machine at least but it is still highly annoying.
If we had a simple option to turn off some sounds like we do GFX effects then I would turn some of them back on. CAP depleted, Ammo out etc. However the warp tunnel is probably the most annoying sound in any game and one you hear a hell of a lot if you play for even a week.
Give us the option to turn some off and then I think a few more would have the essentials on. If not, you miss nothing with sounds off.

I have to agree with this, the jumpgate and now also some other sounds have become far too loud over the last few patches. I like to play with sound on for the immersion, but it all seems messed up atm, if you want to be able to hear the music, you get deafened by the gates and sonic booms. I'm sure you had a slider to turn down effects and keep music before

Personally, I like the sounds, but they could use a revamp. Too much sounds alike, and could be changed around to be different. Although, my biggest beef is light missiles... I'm in my Prophecy having a good time tanking, then I see a big explosion on my screen, knocking my ship up a bit, and a really loud exploding sound, yet, I look at my armor, and there isn't any more red on the armor readout than there was before. I just expected that something so loud, so massive of a visual, would have done more damage to me.

I would play with sound... but the warp sound is pretty annoying. And the gun sounds. At max zoom, they should get quieter... preferably silent.
So I go with the typical immersion of being in space. No sounds at all for me, no sir! (who cares about your joyful pod imitations of sound, I really dont)

EVE has sound?
Also, yes I might turn it on if they fixed it up a bit (a lot, actually). Having missiles and turrets extremely loud even though the sound is on the minimum of what you can actually hear is ********. Selective sound options would be win as well.
EVE plays just fine without sound, though, which is good since you need to turn it off as soon as you do anything PvP related in a group. Not just fleet battles, mind you, but simple "let's go out in frigs and shoot some people" PvP because when your FC is laying out a strategy all you hear is "WARP DRIVE ACTIVE" + extremely loud sound of warping. During fights you might miss who to primary, which can be a problem if it isn't obvious, due to "A MODULE HAS RUN OUT OF CHARGES" and "THE CAPACITOR IS EMPTY".

Yes i agree, the eve sounds are terrible . Lasers sound like disturbing child toyguns . Hybrids sound like whoa look at this, yet there is no effect. Same with missiles . I only like artilery sounds, and no effect there either .
Sometime before i turned off all the sounds , i just wanted to turn off the music , yes . I lowered down the music but i still could not get rid of other ambient sounds . Hey, i dont want to hear anything else except my clicking and module effect sounds , but there is no way to get rid of ambient sound as it is considered as just 'sound' .
Therefore i completely turn off all the sound . You can hear the disturbing ambient sounds while you are docked .

The sounds are not that bad and as others have said your would not hear anything outside the ship anyways all you would hear would be things going on in the ship.
Personnally I keep my ships zoomed all the way out so the only thing I here is the wonderful sound of the computer. Such a lovely voice I could listen to it all day , well at least till she started complaining about my bad driving
And I like the music as well.

Edited by: Father Dibbles on 01/01/2008 17:02:15 Terrible sound is what makes EVE, EVE. It just would not be the same without that insufferably irritating woman spamming your ears with "YOU ARE UNABLE TO WARP BECAUSE YOU ARE WARPSCRAMBLED." True, fleet warfare someone described as 'vomit in the ears' but..... thats never going to change now is it? Nevertheless, lets hope CCP spend the next 80 man years revamping sound, and ignore the important stuff.
If the sound got improved, I'd be in danger of playing an up-to-date and pant wettingingly immersive game. As it stands though, myself, Heston, that woman, and a nice big mug of Yorkshire Tea (for hard water only!) is damn near good enough for me.

Technically you're wrong.
Sound won't cross a vaccuum but if your ship is struck by a missile the vibrations will travel just fine through the hull, to your pod, threw the goo and into your ear. There they will wobble your eardrum and you will hear the impact.
Secondly if you fire a weapon any vibration will also reach your eardrum.
Thirdly the back story indicates that everything we experience is created by the pod computer. All vision and sound is artificial and designed to convey information. It's just a shame that CCP stopped short of linking sound to instrumentation. We should be able to hear our shields failing and hear the difference between weapons fire on our shields and on our armour. -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

How about instead of putting the idiotic reply of "Eve has sound!?" You either not post or actually post something that is pertainable to the thread and can be discussed intelligently. Yes we ALL know the EVE sound engine has its many issues. YES, we know many play with the sound off due to certain issues. But putting down such posts like that can be considered trolling and is in no way productive to conversation.
I would love an update to the sound engine, they need to fix all the errors and streamline it so it isn't a lag pit. Plus little things like sounds happening when they should and updating some of the poor ones would be much appreciated.

I would love an update to the sound engine, they need to fix all the errors and streamline it so it isn't a lag pit. Plus little things like sounds happening when they should and updating some of the poor ones would be much appreciated.
Woah EvE has sound??!!
lol but I turned it off mainly because the effects make my ears bleed, and the music (with the exception of the deadspace tracks which are not even in the fricken jukebox) are horrible considering my taste. --------------------------------- Xoduse |
