The last time 0.0 was opened to general access it was done by the big blue alliance and allowed nearly all players except pirates to rat and mine in there space there only rule was you stay out of certain systems and if the alliance closed down there space you docked or shuttled out. This was an awesome idea then someone paid MC to take it down and ruined it for all

annoyingly, this is one of eve's weakness's back in 2003 u could fly around 0.0 space all week without been hassled... now its a different story, with the alliance wars n all.. yes u could join an alliance, but been a part of that has it price... and the wierd thing is... there is still systems that are still spend the majority of their time empty.. but highsec dwellers can never get there with all the alliance gate camps, leading in and out of 0.0... its a catch 22. i guess solo//new and high sec dwellers will find it very difficult to access 0.0 at all unless they abandon there little corps and join the bigger ones (which undoubtily will be part of an alliance war) and the players get ordered about and called to duty every day to get blown up, even in empire get blown up just for passing thru (wardec) and lose all their isk till they leave the corp only to find they never acually had the chance for any 0.0 exploration//mining afterall. . . its a shame ccp really need to do some balancing when it comes to 0.0 access

There are still plenty of ways to get out to 0.0 solo. It does take more effort than setting auto pilot and hoping for the best. Things are a lot harder than they used to be but it is still doable.
You have to decide what you want to do out there. Mining is pretty hard as you need somewhere to refine. You also need to ba able to deal with the rats. Solo this takes organisation and you will quickly find just hunting the rats is easier and more profitable. With good skills an assault frigate or cruiser is all you need. Easy enough to get past all but the most organised camps.
The trick is getting past the choke points, this is where the map and talking to people is your best bet. I got talking to some freespacers years ago and they told me of a little used back way into Pure Blind. Granted it was an extra 11 jumps but no camps. Meanwhile the autopilot route was heavily camped and racking up hundreds of kills a day.
Live intel is good too, if you can get on a local intel channel you can be warned about camps and know when a camp has been broken up.
Being a trader can be a good start, if you can bring goods to an alliance they will likely set you blue and give you intel. POS fuel is good but so is taking orders. Their members give you a list of things they need, you bring it to their doorstep for a modest mark-up. In time they may even trust you enough to set up a small POS to base out of. The benefit of this is one less moon an enemy can claim easily. Ushra'Khan did this in Providence in the early days. Worked well and we had quite a diverse mix of locals from miners, builders to mercs repairing their sec status and making some ISK. Of course it was more Deadwood than "Anti-PK Camalot" but it worked for a time.
One key thing to look at, get out of the NPC corp. Even if it's just you in a one man corp do it. NPC corp just screams alt-spy-scout-thing and nobody can set standings to you.
