Ok... ISK spam isn't anything new. Foreign farmers spamming the chat in EVE trying to get you to buy their ISK in crappily written English with lots of exclamation marks to make up for their lack of grammar. They'll even hit your eve mail inbox at times.
But really, this one is new.... I logged onto my yahoo email, and checking my spam folder I find EVE ISK ads of all things. First time I've ever received anything of the sort. Anyone else ever gotten anything of the sorts? |

Errr... If you get 'em when you go to a trade hub I think your getting them in your EVEmail inbox, unless you have your email address in your profile then I dunno how they'd be sending it to your actual email inbox as the two spam emails I got.

I'm just curious... how is the connection made between your ingame character and an email address you use? How are these informations being gleaned? ----- TANSTAAFL

I was wondering the exact same thing. I've been trying to figure out where my email address made contact with the knowledge that I played EVE.... Those two spam emails were the first I've ever gotten. Wish I had saved them so I could post them up here, and get the dates. But unsurprisingly they came from yahoo china....

Sign up at any eve-related sites with that email?
I bet it might have something to do with either:
1. Site getting hacked and emails stolen. 2. Site owner selling email addresses to isk spammers.

Actually no, haven't signed up to any sites at all recently. Hopefully the isk sellers haven't gotten their claws into any of CCP's files.

Ah ha!!!
I think we just found out what happened a few weeks ago when the eve server was shutdown because of the hack into the database.
Either that or some eve related sites are starting to sell mail addresses (I blame Chribba :P) But to be fair my opinion does not count because I am as drunk as a CCP employee who writes the patcher scripts. :D

Hmm... I don't remember that, but then again I wasn't around at the time. If that is how my email address was gotten, then perhaps that makes some sense. Hope that is all they got on me though.

I get eve isk sale ads all the time in gmail. The reason is the 'adsense' ads pickup on keywords in the mail and will display relevant ads.
so for at least gmail if you receive an email from someone talking about cats then adsense will display ads about cat stuff.
And of course when I received the eve newsletter, gmail was full of adsense ads for selling isk which was quite funny seeing the official newsletter bordered by isk selling ads.
but thats how you are probably recieving same email. Probably more intrusive ad program then adsense, for example yahoo screens mail for keywords and if eve happens to be one then you receive advertisement for eve related stuff all based on the keywords used in the mail.
anyhow perhaps thats what is happening. Cause everytime someone emails me about eve or I get an eve newsletter gmail lights it up with isk seller ads...

They're not ads, they are actual spam emails from actual people with yahoo chinese email addresses.

Edited by: Nagen on 30/12/2007 11:14:23 Tranquility server was shut down either October or November for quite a long time. They found some kind of security exploit and decided to take server down while they assessed the damage.
I do not believe CCP ever told us what damage has been done or how long this exploit has been present or what information was extracted in any. Of all the players playing EVE the farmers have most incentive to do this sort of a thing.

If it's what I think you're talking about, CCP did explain.
Some chucklehead shifted some loot-tables around, essentially letting every 'rat they were killing drop faction/officer/best-named gear. There was a dev-blog about. Don't have the link handy, but shouldn't be that hard to find.
It didn't have anything to do with e-mail addresses... that we know of...

The only site where a) I have given my e-mail address and b) has anything at all EVE related on the site is right here on the main EVE site. So, by your suggestions 1) the EVE site was hacked OR 2) Someone at CCP is loooking to make some extra spending money selling out our e-mail addresses.
Here's one I got, and I have no clue who the sender is. I do know it is NOT anyone of my friends:

DO NOT OPEN THESE EMAILS OR DOWNLOAD ATTACHMENTS.
I recieved two on my hotmail account that weren't diverted to my spam box. The address isn't hard to figure out considering it's basically my character name.
I was going to forward them to CCP to see of they could reference the E-Mail address back to any account details, but noticed they had attachments.
When scanned, they made AVG, and mcafee through Hotmail go ballistic and made Windows Defender almost have a coronary.
Luckily I was checking my mail from my laptop, which doesn't have an Eve-Client installed, and doesn't get used for anything where any of my details might be put at risk.
Be very careful what you open from these people, you could potentially end up with a keylogger or other nasty stuff finding it's way onto your system.

Not that long ago, CCP had a security breach. Apparently, the entire support/petition database was stolen. Someone then made all this data available for download, and linked it to these forums. CCP reacted quickly, but many people have already downloaded the data.
Now it seems spammers finally got their hands on it as well
