POSs are one of my little pet hates in Eve, I don’t mind shooting them, esp. as we sorta get to loot them these days, but I do hate fuelling them, repairing them, assembling them, and dismantling them… at least dismantling in the way that doesn’t involve guns and enormous internet spaceships anyway.
In this post, I’m just going to cover my idea for fixing the most common problem with POSs, and one that doesn’t get nearly as much attention as stuff like sovereignty, that being…
Fuel.
By far the biggest problem with fuelling POSs is that way we have 8 different types of fuel to deal with per POS (11 in total counting all the isotopes), meaning 8 different sets of numbers, all of which are variable based on tower size, race, sovereignty level, CPU usage, and PG usage.
Anyone who deals with POSs knows the annoyance of either having lots of notes full of fuel numbers, or excel sheets, or 3rd party applications to tell them how much fuel to load there haulers with, the thing is… us having to manually calculate, type in and individually move the required fuels around is an unnecessary timesink and a pain in the arse.
My Solution: Everything else in Eve that deals with raw materials - everything from T1&T2 manufacturing, drugs, cosmos items, etc etc - takes raw materials and builds them into something before they can be used. POS fuel should be no different.
Instead of POS fuel being lose materials as they are now, they should be built into “reactor cores” or whatever fancy sci-fi name you’d like to call them, exactly the same POS fuels we have now in the same quantities, only built into one single solid lump that will last say 14 days, but require roughly 50% of the mass of the m3 volume an equivalent amount of fuel is today.
These “reactor cores” would come in 4 different flavours for the 4 different races towers, this way the isotope market is unaffected as the demand should stay the same.
The major difference in operation between “reactor cores” and current POS fuel usage, would be in the way CPU/PG use effects fuel useage. For the uneducated: right now if you put 6 days worth of trade goods into a POS, those trade goods will last 6 days no matter what, but your PG/CPU fuel use (liquid oz & heavy water) is dependent on how much of your towers PG/CPU capacity is being utilized. In my idea, reactor cores would simply gain somewhere around 25%* of there normal lifespan when at zero CPU, zero PG use, when using 50% PG&CPU they would last 12.5%* longer, etc. (*note: these figures are just estimates and would need to be properly balanced)
This should offset the fact that if your tower only runs at around 25% of capacity, you are in effect paying for fuel you would not be using, as you can no longer balance fuel depending on requirements.
Advantages of this solution: -Removes a lot of unnecessary maths and excel sheet crap from Eve -Faster, simpler, minus one timesink. -With the right roles, now even a newb can fuel a tower without committing the sin of 99 days of heavy water. -Much less DED mail spam from dieing towers -Easyer logistics / hauling, towers now stay fuelled longer for the same amount of time spent maintaining them. -Less people getting burnt out dealing with the current system. -Isk sink – the blueprints for these reactor cores probably shouldn’t be free if ya know what I mean ;)
Disadvantages -Easier logistics (depends on your point of view) -Isk sink… because someone will find something to complain about. -Running towers that operate on very low CPU/PG levels may cost more.
I have a few more ideas on this, but this thread is long enouth allready so...
