It has just hit me within the last 20 miniutes that at some point in the last 2 years I have learned to touch type. Now I am celebrating with cake, it's so delicious and moist, but thats another story.... Just wondering how many people there are here that can do it, a few people I know can but the vast majority don't use computers enough to do it. Hell my family now thinks I am a freak for mashing my keyboard so fast and still coming out with intelligable words So how many can and how many can't?

So, you either have someone to do it for you or have a microphone+software, neither of which is a skill, hence I>Liu.

I don't see what so hard about it...
All you need to learn is where the backspace key is. After that you just force yourself not to look at the keyboard and delete characters until you hit the right ones.
It will be very slow and tedious at start, but after a few days, you should be making considerable progress...
I type around 550CPM with proper punctuation and close to 700 without punctuation, in IRC chat style. I forced myself to learn touchtyping using this method when I was 13-14 I think. Can't remember exactly anymore, been quite a while...
Don't really mean to come off negative, I just don't think it's anything special at all and anyone who uses a computer regularily (at work etc) should learn it, it's really simple and a huge time saver.

I could touch type well until I got my stupid new keyboard after I spilt drink on my own.
On this new one (some ú10 one from maplin) the backspace is the same size as a normal key and not the glorious two key wide rectangle it used to be thus backspacing is a real pain. --------

Edited by: defiler on 29/12/2007 18:23:05 I learned "proper" touch typing in school when I was 14 or something, can't remember exactly (stopped looking at the keyboard years before that). Got fairly decent scores but nothing spectacular, I always preferred my own style (out of habit I guess). After that I switched back to my own style, guess I did it partially because the teacher really hammered it into us how important a proper style is. I've always gone my own way and telling me what I should do is very likely to make me do the opposite even today.
My ability to out-type the teacher always *****s me up, he was so confident with his superior technique... Ok, he wasn't very good, but still. Twice the pride, double the fall.
It's a terrible style by touch typing standards and I know I use my index fingers way too much. I still type pretty fast and accurately though, so there isn't much incentive to improve my style.
Y'know... This may sound like "signs you play too much EVE #458", but I've been looking for a skill to train for a while now. Maybe I should learn proper typing.
I'll have Google find me a training program, but if you can recommend anything specific I'd like to hear it.
Talk to me, I have ISKies! |

I took "keyboarding" back in the 7th grade. It only been recently though that've gotten to where I can hit the numbers at the top without looking. ------ Any factual errors or mistakes in spelling and grammar should be attributed solely to me and not my nation of origin. |

Never learned to touch type. Focused too much around typing english, whereas I spend a lot of my time typing coding, which requires less speed and more odd symbols.
But, I have a modicum of hand-eye coordination, so I also don't need to look at the keyboard when I am typing. Or use 'home' keys, though I would guess 'real' touch typists don't actually need to keep their fingers on the keyboard to find their way around? I type primarily with my middle fingers, presumably because they are the longest, but the faster I type the more fingers I start using.
Linkage may be useful for comparing e-peen. I'm getting a little over 400CPM atm, while half-asleep. -

61 WPM (340 CPM) 3 mistakes (two capitalization and one word with letters out of order)
My right had moves faster than my left so if a word has letters from both sides of the keyboard my right hand can get a little ahead of my left if I'm not careful. ------ Any factual errors or mistakes in spelling and grammar should be attributed solely to me and not my nation of origin. |

Heh. I figured out just about the same way, about a year ago. I was never a hunt-and-peck typer, I learned home keys way back when, but spent ten years looking at the keyboard out of habit. Then one day I just stopped looking. I make fewer errors touch typing than by looking at the keyboard. I do even better when I don't look at the screen. Most of my errors come starting the next word before I've finished the previous.
I bet many frequent forum-posters would be touch typing if they only tried it. You all know where the keys are. Stop looking at them. ----- TANSTAAFL

hehehe and yes lots and lots of gaming with no teamspeak really helps out with the typing. although them damn ' get left out of most words.

Edited by: Phoenus on 31/12/2007 10:26:02 We did touch typing in class at school - however by the time I arrived at secondary school (12), I could already touchtype (self taught).
Embarrassed my teacher, and the rest of the class quite frequently with the speed at which I can type. :)
Just arrived at work pretty much, so starting cold:
You type 548 characters per minute You have 98 correct words and you have 2 wrong words
Will run it again later

It's a bit silly, as you should be able to type a lot faster than that when you're not reading random words in nonsensical order.
Reading the word, processing it in your head and getting the word down is a lot longer than coming up with what you want to type on the spot.
P.s. I think I broke the program, it's taking about 3 minutes to figure out my CPM and then just showed a blank screen -- Banned since 2005, back by popular demand! They said it wouldn't happen!! |
