In Eve, the term "Solar System" is used through out the game to refer to any "Planetary System" or "Star System".
This is actually incorrect English. There is only one Solar System and we live in it.
The term comes from the name of our sun "Sol", and thus our sun's system is named the "Solar System".
Were we living around another star like maybe, Alpha Centauri, then our system would be known as something like the "Centaurian System". Obviously, calling every Planetary System in a game a "Centaurian System" would throw a red flag since this would seem alien to us (who are now only familiar with the term Solar). But both terms are equally incorrect.
When people refer to finding "Other Solar Systems" they are not saying they wish to find other planetary systems, but are saying they wish to find a system like our own. That doesn't they they are using "Solar System" as a generic term, but as a specific example. IE: A "copy" or facsimile of our system as we know it, presumably capable of supporting life.
Other systems around the Universe would/should be called either "Planetary Systems" or "Star Systems" depending on the content of the system.
Citations: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_system http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planetary_system http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Solar%20System
Note: At dictionary.com one of the six definitions says the term may refer to other systems, but notice as stated above, in it's usage it means an example, not a generic term or synonym for "Planetary System".
I brought this up in chat and most people already seemed to know this. I'm surprised no one has brought it up before.

You are correct. And afaik, "Star System" is already in use by some descriptions in the database. -

You forget one important fact; EVE-online is in the future. Only on 100 years a language vocabulary changes a lot, and then think even further in the future how much it have changed then. Surprisingly the English in EVE havenĘt change much at all, but you found a good example of a actually change.
My point is that in our world it would maybe be wrong to use the word like that, but in the world of EVE itĘs CCP that determine what is wrong and what is right.

Your argument is wrong, for the fact that no stars (...suns) are called 'Sol' in EvE.

And Greek god Mars doesn't exist but still there is a planet named after him.
And since you used wiki, here is one other link

Yeah, "cleanup requested" with a reason. Let me quote the relevant part:
From Latin sol (sun).

Yeah, you are right...
but... wait... what we have here?
The Moon (Latin: Luna) is Earth's only natural satellite http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon but.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moons_of_Jupiter
bad, bad wikipedia... you lie to us.. we need to rename Jupiter's moons(or other's planet's moons) to Jupiter's sattelite.

Perhaps CCP should make a replica of our solar system in EVE so we can put konnlo in there where he will live happily ever after. |

Along similar lines the word "world" is used to describe the EVE galaxy like in the description of the jovian factions:
Prosper, [Prosper is a financial corperatio0n that has in recent years invested in several hi-tech companies around the world...]
X-Sense, [X-Sense manufacture medical equipment that it sells all over the world of EVE...]

The term "moon" is by definition Earth's natural satellite, however in other contexts, moon can refer to other planet's natural satellites.

Why? The possibilities are infinite. There's a chance there is a star system out there that's just like ours... 4 small planets, a small planet that broke apart, 4 gas giants, two plutoids, an ice belt (yeah, we have one - it's called "Kupier Belt"), then a few more plutoids... --- "Multiple exclamation marks are a sure sign for a diseased mind." -Terry Pratchett |
