The Empire was at war with the powers of Spain and France, so paying for deffence is a given right? The people in the colonies had it good - they were lower than the average British citizen by a considerable amount. There was a local governence, the policies of the Empire came from the capital in London, a months travel so representation at parlaiment wouldn't work well, so local governments loyal to the crown were in place. Conclusion, whoever started the rebellion was looking for an excuse and pounced on it when it was offered. I think it was one small miscalculation and if he ahd gone over it again and thought, "huh, forgot to carry the one" or something similar we would have a very different world. The generation that I am a part of seems not to realy care about who did what in the war. It happened closing in on 70 years ago, the people who lead our nations back then are dead, the generation born in the war is aging and retired, and since a country is it's people I say that the now nonexistence of the French and British Empires, the change from the USA of being an industrial isolationist power to hedgemon then losing that is more important now. When it comes down to it, does knowing that the US governent of 70 years ago helped us make that much of a difference to how you view them today? I know I certainly don't, the US is making it's mark on me with it's current actions and not with the legacy it inherited, it's the same with Britain and the slave trade -why should we apologise for what our ancestors did against someone elses ancestors if it happened to many generations ago? For the record, I do value the discussion as a debate and to judge where we going, but the heart of the matter it is in the past, and the number of Europeans that beleive America won the war for us will allways be in the minority, and vice verca for Americans thinking US troops just spead up the inevitable victory. ~Nyron Originally by: SoftRevolution Not liking Haruhi is like not liking puppies or rainbows or whisky.
