Hi all, the title says it all. I'd like to buy/build a reasonably priced PC for eve and general internet/work use. I'm not up to date these days on what is needed graphics wise for EVE so can anyone point me to a decent set up (or know a reputable company?) so I don't lag when when the graphic load gets a bit heavy. All of your help is greatly appreciated - thanks guys!

thanks, but is it really necessary to get a $300 video card? i'm thinking since EVE isn't an FPS that it wouldn't need a heavy duty card...am i off base?

I guess that depends whether you want the premium or classic graphic content, my graphics card is realy old and runs the classic client fine.

Do you want a pre-built machine or are you going to build it yourself? A price range would be helpful, my reasonable price could be a lot different to yours, and if it's pre-built you're after, your location wouldn't hurt either.

i'd like to try get something around the $500 range (no monitor)...and i live in northeastern USA. as for the graphics, i don't care much about that, so standard version is fine with me. On a side note, are you less likely to lag network wise if you don't use premium graphics?

I think it lags more only on session changes tbh, like undocking. Except for that, there's not much difference if your computer can support both. -- Banned since 2005, back by popular demand! They said it wouldn't happen!! |

if running XP then 1GB is fine imo. My desktop still runs on 1GB of ram solely on the basis that I don't get any symptons of not having enough RAM (freezes, long loading times, etc) which I would get had I not enough.
Obviously, getting 2GB is a good idea, but only in the same sense that getting an 8800 GT or C2D E6600 is a good idea as it provides a good deal of future-proofing for a very good price. It is by no means whatsoever a minimum requirement for current games (especially EVE, unless you want to 4 run accounts on Premium graphics) as some people would have you believe.

For $500 you will not get much but I think this Dell might suit you.
Technically it can run the new EVE updated graphics but with shared video memory and not much of that I suspect it will do so poorly. But it does run the all important shader model 3 and provides a PCI-E expansion slot should you someday want to upgrade.
It also has a DVD writer which is nice and 2GB of RAM. So, while not a super performer should be ok for EVE and e-mail and browsing and such.

Edited by: Blind Man on 04/01/2008 03:18:06 mobo: Gigabyte GA-G35-DS3L (95$) ram: get 2gb for sure, ddr2 is really cheap now, dont spend over 50 bucks on it..for example from my local store im using for pricing this, 2gb of good ram for 29.99 video card: HD3850 256 (should be around 170-180$) cpu: c2d E4500 (should be around 130$)
do you need a case/psu, a hard drive, or dvd/cd drive?
if you don't you could get a better cpu or something (and if you do ull probably end up a bit over 500$)
and you should have no problem at all running premium gfx as long as you dont go crazy on hdr/shadows..

Newegg will be your best friend, reasonable prices with great customer service. Try to build your machine yourself you will get a much better PC for your cash than buying a prebuilt one, if you have never done it before its not as difficult as it would seem it just needs a little research into your parts and patience and a steady hand and there are plenty of step by step guides available on the Internet. ----------------------------------------------- My new years resolution is to give up nonconstructive posting |
