Edited by: Kazuma Saruwatari on 05/01/2008 10:45:51 I'm sorry for making your workload ever so more heavy, but as with the current generation of Dx9, and the soon-to-be generation of Dx10, I'd like to point out that a not-so-well-known game has set the standard for ship-space battles in not only art, but in gameplay.
This Youtube video of the game should show you what I'm talking about
It brings to mind how fundamentally basic EVE's combat (on an 1on1 basis) is. F1-8 and tackle down the target. Bring friends, blob it up, or nano it out.
Ships didnt feel as important or as powerful in EVE. Even the mighty Battleship feels left out when compared to the capitals, and even then they felt too big, or too weak for their size.
Its not a challenge to change EVE, CCP, more like pointing you guys to reference material that is only a year younger than EVE. There's loads more potential in EVE, you guys said it yourself. Why not exploit it and make more $$$ off it? -

The videos of Nexus and Nexus 2 (even more awesome) have been posted numerous times and have never received a dev response. EVE can look better and I think the new graphics engine can handle such graphics. The real question is will EVE ever look like this? I can't help but think that EVE isn't getting what it deserves from our devs. CCP is not letting EVE be what it is capable of. Based on the experience over the past few years, CCP is not managed well enough to be able to produce such a high quality game.

Nexus looks nice, but I think we've got to remember that we've now got '08 ships but '03 effects. CCPs art department have done wonders with the ships and 90% of the objects and Im pretty keen to see what theyve got planned for weapon effects, shields, damage and so forth. I doubt we'll be dissappointed.

There's a reason why I posted this thread to bring it forth to not only CCP, but the EVE community. It is very good reference material as to how the next graphics update should match up to. Nexus was released 2004, only a year after EVE went live, so there's no excuse for EVE to look as great, or even better, than Nexus by the next graphical update.
But thats not the only reason.
There's a lot about the feel and general gameplay of Nexus that CCP can learn from and make it much more enjoyable in pewpew. As it stands, ships feel so disposable, when they should feel like investments in time and money as they are supposed to be. Sure small frigates and badly-set-up cruisers should go pop quickly, battleships and capitals shouldnt.
Right now, you can kill a BS in under 30 seconds 1 on 1, given the right situation. That doesnt feel right at all.
CCP, do not ignore this reference -

I think the graphics at te moment are looking quite nice. One must not forget that Eve is an MMORPG. MMORPG tend to look quite a bit "uglier" then regular games because of all the players floating around.
Tough i would just be happy with better sound effects. And not making my computer crash when i play with sound on. "Death by very big pew pew blasters."

Errr no. Why? Eve has huge fleet battles, many effects that work on smaller SINGLE player games like nexus simply do not scale well enough. Everyone is complaining that you need a high end card to run premium as it is. ---------------------------------

You doesn't seem to know the Black Sun Engine that Nexus used must be older than EVE. The first playable demo was released in 2002 (http://www.3dgamers.com/dlselect/games/nexus/ig3-demo.txt)
It was fully optimized, and ran great on computer that wouldn't even let you launch EVE Classic.
Now imagine what could be done with this engine and current graphics cards.
For those who'd like to see the Tech Demo of Nexus 2 in HD:

keeping this on first page...
OH and indeed, there isnt any excuse for EVE not to look as good as Nexus is, or even better, with premium. Sure EVE != Nexus and we all know an MMO is vastly more complex than a singleplayer game, but the bar has been set long ago by a game a year younger. -

couldnt be any more indeciphereable than the old UI of EVE. Still, people have played and suceeded in finishing the game (myself included) and I find the UI to be of the same level as EVE's current UI (albeit a bit more shiny and less on the "barefunctional" look). -

Lol, i would say the inverse thing.
Pvp in eve is a joke compared to pvp in homeworld (for example).

I meant codewise, of course. Persistence > session.
Either way, having the deep ship combat gameplay of Nexus in EVE would satisfy a huge proportion of the playerbase. Seriously, wouldnt you want more strategy and tactics in your f1-8? -

Edited by: Freezehunter on 06/01/2008 01:59:06 I really don't understand why CCP doesn't want to do this, i mean, all they need to do is add some more sounds to the game and some cool new shield and weapon and module effects, why is that so hard to do?
And about the lag, let us handle the PC lag, you just make those effects clientside (who cares if the shield hits are a little different between clients in terms of graphics...)
U just send info to the client hit/miss/damage and let our PC's do the rest ^^
P.S: i've played Nexus: TJI and i think it's one of the best space RPG's i have ever played, as a matter of fact, when i first played it, i said OMG this is just like Eve, only better graphics and effects and sounds and interface...
