It could be interesting, or a horrible affront to people's conceptions (Bene Gesserit Sisters should not /dance)
There's certainly lots of factions that could conceivably be fighting in the one place (Dune/Arrakis) House Harkonnen, the Atreides remnants, the Imperial Sardukaur, the Fremen, the Spice smugglers, etc.
It would all depend on the implementation. Dune has a lot more of plotting and scheming compared to direct combat, so it might be tricky to do.

I would like to see an MMO using the universe of Dune...it would be a real challenge to make the visuals fit the grandeur of what Frank Herbert managed to evoke, with the baroque finery of the Imperial Court, the callous technological nightmare of the Harkonnen and the like. Implementing space travel based on the Spacers Guild would be interesting, although it would be somewhat restrictive to be reliant on a set circuit of heighliners moving around.
As an aside, one of the things which attracted me to EVE was that the political environment between the different player groups was pretty close to what was described in Dune. Lots of scheming, infighting, espionage and the like.

I would be very interested in how me talking about a possible Dune MMO is meant to get me into trouble with my employer. It is an interesting IP for which the sandbox principles EVE is founded on would be a good match. There is nothing wrong with looking at other fictional universes and thinking how we could build an MMO around them. A lot of inspiration for new features and games come out of such a thought process.
And please, give me some credit...I am at the very least worth Burger King.

Problem is, everyone would want to be a Kwisatz Haderach, and only a few people would figure it out because it would be a long and arduous process.
Then they'd do a revision and make KH a starting class, so everybody and his brother can be one. Then, Chaos. ----- TANSTAAFL

There was already a Dune MMORTS titled Dune Generations by Cryo Interative. It was cancelled after the publisher went bankrupt. The rights to any and all Dune video games is held by Dino De Laurentiis.
There was also a Dune PnP RPG by Last Unicorn Games a while back. They were bought out by Wizards of the Coast and the game went out of print. Wizards has all the rights to any and all Dune-based PnP RPGs.

I'd love a Dune MMOG set around the time of the last couple novels, as the Scattered are beginning to return. The first few books don't offer a lot of options, IMO, for what one can do within the story. But the last couple offer all sorts of possibilities. Plus there wouldn't be any Houses Harkonnen or Atreides to be in, so that wouldn't be what everyone and their uncles plays as. Also there's more freedom for travel and commerce without a Guild or CHOAM monopoly.

"Cryonetworks in 2001 disclosed information about Dune Generations, an upcoming online real-time strategy game based on Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi novel series. The company launched an official Web site for the upcoming game that featured some concept images, a brief background story and description of the persistent gameworld, and a list of frequently asked questions. Dune Generations was scheduled for release at the end of 2001.
Cryo would be the publisher behind the game; Canada-based DreamCatcher Interactive would be the distributor for North America as part of a partnership which published a number of other Cryo games.
Dune Generations would let players assume control of a dynasty in the Dune universe. The goal of the game would be to build the dynasty into the most powerful family in the universe, by gaining control of the planet Arrakis, the source of the most precious substance in the universe: spice. Players would choose to control one of three types of dynasties ù traders, soldiers, or mercenaries ù and each dynasty type would provide a different playing experience.
With the closure of Cryo at the beginning of 2002, the game was canceled due to a failure to negotiate a deal with the company's creditors."

so basically, what you're saying is that you'd rather work for Blizzard?!
anyway, a dune MMO would be brilliant - di laurentis' visuals are incredibly evocative (even if his film was crap) and the universe herbert created has endless potential.

I think they have a misguided concept that if you work for a company, you're never allowed to play another computergame in your life. Because, of course, game developers never appreciate or like the work of other companies, as such is sinful heresy. or something.

Exactly. A Dev being forbidden from playing or even examining other games is like the King of Austria forbidding Beethoven from examining the works of Mozart. Creators must be allowed to study and enjoy other creators. ----- TANSTAAFL

Dune is overrated, the different houses were all too stereotypical and the sole source of spice ridicilous, not to mention the Harkkonen plugs.
Worms ****ing spice would amount to what once the planet is made green by the fremen?
