I have a feeling a Dune MMO would be somewhat the same as WoW with a mixture of EVE.

and how is that any different to Eve? there are plenty of Darths knocking around out there.
one of my favorite pass times in WoW was finding some tenuous reason some idiot's character name infringed a copyright somewhere, and having a GM change it for them. a chum was apparently single handedly responsible for blizzard changing their naming policy after somehow managing to have about half his server renamed.

Originally by: Biolaja Tista Dune Generations would let players assume control of a dynasty in the Dune universe. The goal of the game would be to build the dynasty into the most powerful family in the universe, by gaining control of the planet Arrakis, the source of the most precious substance in the universe: spice.
That actually seems like an interesting concept, but I'd rather see it be "inspired by" Dune rather than a direct license. This is similar to Homeworld being inspired by the original Battlestar: Galactica, but it's in no way a direct copy.
Licensed games (and MMOs in particular) have the problem that the established universe was setup to for the book/TV/movie/whatever and often make decisions for what moves the plot along rather than what's convenient for implementing in a game. For instance, SWG always had the problem that the Rebels should be massively outnumbered by the Imperials, but there was no way to force the players. In practice, the split was roughly 50/50 across the servers, and many people didn't like the way this wasn't "true" to the movies.
I don't think there's a single remarkable MMO that was based on a license. Even before NGE, SWG had a lot of stupid problems (NGE was just the coup de grace). Good MMOs start life as MMOs.

This isn't a problem regarding the Dune universe; and I doubt that canon would stop a Dune MMOG, since it didn't stop Westwood Studios. All of the RTS games based on the franchise (Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty, Dune 2000: Long Live the Fighters!, Emperor: Battle for Dune) were exactly that: based on the franchise. They did not follow the storyline explicitly and did numerous things that blatantly contradicted established canon, and Dune Generations would have followed the model of being uncanonical.

Independent, non-franchised world (or self-franchise) is the way to go. Just look at EVE (new idea) and WoW (self-franchise), and probably (hopefully) Infinity. Soon™. CCP style. On the other end of the spectrum, I smell Star Wars Galaxies all over again, and I won't even begin commenting on Star Trek. Big franchises attract big investors, which invite epic failures. NOT a good sign.
The ONLY way this MIGHT work is if somebody with a reasonable interest (say, Laurentis+family+associates) would somehow get a team together and secured the rights to an "almost canon" Dune MMO and got to work on it. And even then, I wouldn't hold my breath for a success.
