okies, im just tryin to figure out exactly what i did to get killed by the gate sentry guns. so i dont do it again, lol.
I was flying my shiny new manticore in a lowsec system, (minmatar space i think), so i warp to a belt and fire a couple missiles at a rat, just to see the dmg. I get the msg about firing on targets and so forth, but im shooting at rats, so i just click ok. Immediately i get the 'you have lost security status' msg. Odd, i think to myself. I dont finish off the rat, but rather warp to a gate so i can go and log. when i get to the gate, the sentry guns make mincemeat of my new bomber, cry!
So. i guess what im wondering is, why did i get such a nasty response from the sentry guns if i had only shot at a rat?!

Good question, check your logs to be sure what you shot at.

You had to aggress something. Did you shoot a secure can? Was the rat actually another player whom you thought was a player? Did you inadvertantly/target a concord ship for combat?

When you got that message about firing on peaceful targets, that was a clue. When you opened fire upon that target, you broke the law, and got a 'Global Criminal' flag for 15 minutes. When you log off, that flag stays with you for a while longer.

It was definatley NOT a player, cuz thats what i was looking for to begin with. It was a cyclone class BC. Im wondering tho, are you only safe to shoot pirate rats? could the ship i fired on been some sort of minmatar republic ship or something, that would warrant the sentry guns firing on me? I know the msg about firing on targets was a warning, but i kinda brushed it off because it wasnt a player (to be honest, the msg confused me as to why i got it). and after i dies i did the get red global countdown thingy, so i couldnt war out of the system to get a ship to loot my wreck, so i just logged after that.

You know what, did you by chance have something illegal in your cargo or fitted on your ship? ie Slaves, Narcotics etc?
Did you loot something illegal? I believe in some systems, depending on what the contraband is, it will warrant attack.
Fortunately they didn't pod you. Also only fire on Pirate Rats. You can't attack the various NPC republic ships without risking being attacked.

Nope, i had JUST bought the ship and fitted it. nothing in my cargo hold except cruise missiles and some sensor scripts. It gotta wait til i get home from work and check my log to see what exactly i fired on, because i know for sure it was not a player, it was an NPC cyclone in an asteriod belt.

Maybe you were FUI? Flying Under the Influence of Alcohol?
FUI is not tolerated by concord and will result in immediate distruction of ship. LOL.
Find out what you fired on, I'm curious now.

negative. it was a cyclone, i recall seeing it on my little target thumbnail, remember watching its shields go down as i hit it. i didnt stay to kill it cuz i was just testing dmg, thats how i know what it wasnt a can or wreck or player or anything.
i musta done something wrong, but i am positive i was an npc cyclone that i shot at that gave me the msg to being with, and the red counter.
ive logged off since then, but is there a way to check a log once i get back on to see what i fired on?

was it red or white?
and if it was red then petition it asking what happen so that they can check the logs for you.

Look at your "CONCORD corp -> you" standing and/or security status transactions. It should tell you that they dropped your sec because you attacked blah..

ah ok, seems like you did something "helpfull" to the npc. What was your ship setup? If you didn't do anything like that then petition the loss.
I think it was changed so that people couln't exploit missions in highsec by remote repping the npc's then grabbing the mission runners loot after he died.

Perhaps you accidentally used a remote armor repair/shield transporter/energy transfer on the rat? That's a criminal offense.

only mod i had other than my cruises was my cloaking device, a passive targeter, sensor booster and sensor damps, but i dont think i was running the damps or the booster.
no reps or anything like that, i was in a stealth bomber.
here was my fit:
3x malkth cruise launcher
1x cloaking device II
1x sensor booster
1x passive targeting thingy
2x sensor damps
1x BCU

well i petitioned it, so i guess ill see. if not ill check my logs when i get home, just cant figure it out. im not a complete nooblet, so i know it wasnta concord or other 'white' target i attacked.

make sure you did not fit remote sensor booster instead of sensor booster - they look same and both use a mid slot

you know, that is quite possible, and may explain everything. although i dont think i ever activated my sensor boosters or damps, i can be 100% about that...

I just checked my killmail, i had a 'remote sensor booster II' fitted.
That musta been what did it
GOD, what a sh*tty way to lose 35m worth of sh*t!
I dont remember activating the booster, but like i said, i cant be 100% about it. that must be it, its the only thing that makes sense.

Pretty sucky way to lose your ship.
What doesn't really make a whole lot of sense is that if Concord has such a huge problem with the pirates and anyone seen to be helping (repping) them - why don't they just swoop in and deal with the pirates themselves anyway?
I suppose you can't really complain because there is a "Do you want to proceed with this dangerous act" warning, but if it's not obvious why that has popped up you could be forgiven for clicking through it.

That's bad luck - The Remote Sensor Booster/Sensor Booster/Remote Sensor Dampener family can be a little confusing......I once manufactured 100 Remote Sensor Boosters instead of Remote Sensor Damps and got stuck with them for ages (I got off rather lightly compared to you though). It's an easy enough mistake to confuse them, but hopefully you'll only make it once.
